[source: David Bromley] "The Acton family came originally from England to Ireland in Cromwell's time.
Sometime between 1649 and 1658. At this time some of those who came from England were, let us
say, not the best of kind. They were sent there not by choice. Connaught was a Penal colony during
Cromwell’s time and depending on the degree of guilt, those who were transplanted would receive a
certain amount of land. We were always told that the first Actons were “banished “ to the west of Ireland.
The Actons were basically on the Royalist side and this may have been the reason for banishment. I do
not know if the Actons fall into this category."

[source: David Bromley] "Abram served in the Prescott Regiment in defence of the Fenian Raids. The
Fenian raids were attacks by members of the Fenian Brotherhood based in the United States, on British
army forts, customs posts and other targets in Canada in order to bring pressure on Britain to withdraw
from Ireland, between 1866 and 1871. The raids were successfully repelled by British forces and local
militias. They divided many Irish-Canadians, many of whom were torn between loyalty to their new home
and sympathy for the aims of the Fenians. A lot of the Irish, particularly the Protestants, were fiercely
loyal to Britain and fought the Fenians. While the U.S. authorities arrested the men and confiscated their
arms afterwards, many in government had turned a blind eye to the preparations for the invasion,
angered at British support for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. There were five Fenian
raids of note."

Kemptville Weekly Advance, 3 Sep 1914: MRS. ACTON, KEMPTVILLE On Sunday, Aug 30th, death
came as a happy release from years of pain and suffering to Mrs. Elizabeth Acton of this town. The
deceased had for the past twenty-five years been a sufferer from that dread malady, cancer, and during
that long period she was never known to have uttered a complaint or made a protest, although at times
her pain must have been well nigh past endurance but she bore it with a true Christian fortitude. The
deceased was born in Kemptville on November 19th, 1862, and lived her life in the village, being a
daughter of the late Henry Agnew. She was married on the 12th of January, 1898 to Mr. Abram Acton
who predeceased her some eight years ago. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Presbyterian
Church, and was an active worker in the various societies connected with it as long as her malady
permitted her to be around. For the past eight months she has been confined to her bed totally blind.
Her mother, two sisters and one brother survive, the sisters being: Mrs. TR Brownlee of Ottawa; and
Miss Ida of town. The brother is George Agnew of Mercer, Cal. The funeral took place from her late
residence on Asa Street on Tuesday, September 1st, service being conducted at the house by Rev. PA
McLeod, DD, interment being in the Union cemetery. Many beautiful flowers were sent by her friends
and the friends of her relatives in token of sympathy and the high esteem the deceased had been held in
the community where her life had been spent and where she had borne her sufferings in a manner that
ought to put to shame those who survive and are apt to complain of their lot.

REV. FREDERICK WELLINGTON BATES, B.PAED. With the passing of Rev. F.W. Bates on June 1st,
1949, at his home at 118 Morningside Drive, Toronto ON, a husband, father and brother, greatly
beloved, a true friend whose fellowship was prized by all who knew him, a scholar and leader in the
intellectual and educational life of Western Canada, finished his earthly pilgrimage; and his spirit was
released from the prison-house of time to the freer fuller life of eternity. Fred, as he was known to his
many friends, was born on August 7th, 1878, at Easton's Corners, Wolford, Grenville ON, in the old
Bates' homestead, where his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bates, lived with the grandparents.
It was a Godly home, presided over by Grandfather Nathaniel Bates, who was a Methodist local
preacher for over sixty years, and whose consistent Christian life left an indelible stamp upon his family
and the community. Early in life Fred gave his heart to the Lord and consecrated himself to the work of
the Christian ministry. He attended public school near his home, high school in Kemptville, Grenville
ON, and obtained a teacher's certificate from the Model School at Prescott ON. After a short term of
teaching he became a probationer for the ministry in the Montreal Conference of the Methodist Church
and served on charges in the Eastern Townships of the Province of Quebec. He entered the Wesleyan
Theological College and McGill University and in 1907 graduated with a B.A., and in 1909 with a M. Sc.
in mathematics and science. He later received a B. Paed. from the University of Toronto. After
graduation, Mr. Bates became a Demonstrator in Physics in McGill and at the same time acted as
Secretary of the McGill Y.M.C.A. A year later he went to McDonald College at Ste. Anne de Bellevue as
Assistant Professor of Physics. In 1908 he completed his theological training and was ordained to the
work of the Christian ministry at Pembroke. On June 22nd, 1910, Fred was married to Miss Ida L.
Nudell, only child of Mr. and Mrs. M. Nudell of Aultsville ON. They spent nearly thirty-nine happy years
together. In 1912 they moved to Saskatchewan, where he became Professor of Physics and Agriculture
in Regina College, which at that time was owned and operated by the Methodist Church. That was the
beginning of thirty-two years of continuous educational work in the Province of Saskatchewan. In 1915
Mr. Bates was appointed Director School of Agriculture for northern Saskatchewan with headquarters in
Saskatoon, where they lived for four years, and where he also taught nature study and agriculture in the
Normal School. Early in 1919 they returned to Regina, where he became Director of Rural Education,
and later Inspector of Schools and Instructor in the Normal School. During all these years Mr. Bates
continued to be a minister of the Methodist Church and after Union in 1925 of the United Church, and
was always ready and willing to preach on call for any of his brethren. During his residence in Regina he
was a member of the Metropolitan Church and of its Official Board. His public activities were many. He
served on the Executives of the Y.M.C.A., Rotary Club, Canadian Club, Civil Service Association, Boy
Scouts, McGill Graduates, Society of Technical Agricultural Tests, Men's University Club. In 1944, after
his retirement from active educational work in Saskatchewan, Mr. and Mrs Bates moved to Toronto and
became members of Eaton Memorial Church, and he transferred his ministerial membership to the
Centre Presbytery of the Toronto Conference. He became a member of the McGill Graduates Society
and the Empire Club of Toronto. Until his last illness, Fred had always been strong and healthy. In
January it became necessary to have a major operation. That seemed to be successful as for three
months he gained in strength, but after Easter the ebb tide set in and "that which came from out the
boundless deep, turned again home". He was a big man, physically and spiritually, a rock to lean
against. He always had himself in control. He was always generous in his estimate of others. And it
was never necessary for him to make a noise in order to attract attention. He was of the type indicated
by the prophet of the words, "A man shall be as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land". For three
days his body lay in the midst of a profusion of beautiful flowers sent by his many friends, and before the
cortege left for Eaton Memorial Church, where Dr. David McLennan conducted the funeral service, the
Rev. A.E. Runnells, D.D., a friend of many years, offered prayer at the house. The pallbearers were the
Rev. George Dorey, D.D., and Messrs. W.R. McConnell, Harry Hunt, Eugene Haberer, C.W. Gardiner
and Dr. W.J. Dobson. The interment took place at Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto. He leaves to mourn
his loss, his wife Ida, in Toronto his sons, Gerald of Montreal, and Ronald of Toronto and their wives; his
sister, Lydia, Mrs. Charles Dales, In Brandon, where his parents found their last resting place; and many
friends both east and west who cherish his memory. "Servant of God, well done." C.J.L.B.

FORMER EDUCATION OFFICIAL Prominent in the Saskatchewan education department for almost 29

Acton, John, Kemptville Weekly Advance, July 24, 1891:
The grey-headed line of landmarks, once stalwart and brave, is gradually diminishing. On Monday last one of the
old and respected citizens of the township of Oxford, John Acton, terminated a long life, having attained the
advanced age of over 84 years. Deceased came from Ireland in 1834 and has been a continual resident of Oxford
ever since. He has one sister still surviving him, Mrs. Greer, who lived convenient to her brother the greater part
of life, but who removed to this village a couple of years ago. She likewise has reached a ripe old age, having
passed her four score and two years, and is as active and hearty as many twenty years younger. Deceased was
father of Messrs. Robert and Abram Acton, of this village.

Mrs Acton, Kemptville
On Sunday, Aug 30th, death came as a happy release from years of pain and suffering to Mrs Elizabeth Acton of
this town. The deceased had for the past twenty-five years been a sufferer from that dread malady, cancer, and
during that long period she was never known to have uttered a complaint or made a protest, althought at times her
pain must have been well nigh past endurance but she bore it with a true Christian fortitude. The deceased was
born in Kemptbille on November 19th, 1862, and lived her life in the village, being the daughter of the late Henry
Agnew. She was married on the 12th of January 1898 to Mr Abram Acton who predeceased her some eight years
ago. She was a lifelong member of St Paul's Presbyterian Church, and wa an active worker in the various
societies connected with it as long as her malady permitted her to be around. For the past eight months she has
been confined to her bed totally blind. Her mother, two sisters and one brother survive, the sisters being: Mrs TR
Brownlee of Ottawa; and Miss Ida of town. The brother is Goerge Agnew of Mercer, Cal. The funeral took place
from her late residence on Asa Street on Tuesday, September 1st, service being conducted at the house by Rev
PA McLeod, DD, interment being in the Union cemetary. Many beautiful flowers were sent by her friends and the
friends of her relatives in token of sympathy and the high esteem the deceased had been held in the community
where her life had been spent and where she had borne her sufferings in a manner that ought to put to shame
those who survive and are apt to complain of their lot.
Acton - Entered into rest at Kemptville on Sunday, August 30, Elizabeth A Agnew, relict of the late Abram Acton.
