ARMSTRONG surname in Clarendon, Quebec and Huntley / Goulbourn, Ontario in the 1800's
April 23, 2008:
Al, Could you please be so kind as to also list me under Armstrong
researchers with the following text:
I am seeking the following information:
1. the Father of William B. Armstrong (ab 1824 - 1904) of Clarendon Que.
2. the father of the wife of Robert Argue, Elizabeth Anne Argue (nee Armstrong)
"of Huntley" (ab. 1814-Dec 10 1894 Stittsville).
I suspect that the father of both Wm B Armstrong and also Robert Argue's
wife, Elizabeth Ann Armstrong sr. was John Armstrong listed in Obit. #2
below but am seeking confirmation and more information. Also, I am seeking
the death registration for Elizabeth Ann as I do not seem to find it on
Microfilm.
In Bruce Elliott's Irish Migrants in the Canadas on p. 327 I note that a Rev Francis
Fox wrote Bathurst 1 July 1821 re a John Armstrong family of March. I
suspect this John may have been the father of the Robert Argue's wife,
Elizabeth Anne Armstrong sr. and also the father of Wm B Armstrong (who was
father of Elizabeth Ann Armstrong jr, wife of Silas Argue).
Robert Argue, son of the original Goulbourn George, was born Feb 1810 in
County Cavan, Ire: died
November 24, 1892 in Stittsville. He married Elizabeth Armstrong January
15, 1834 in Stittsville, Ontario; she was born ab. 1814 in Goulbourn
Township or Ireland, and died December 10, 1894, buried in United
Cemetery, Stittsville, Ontario. (I cannot find a record of her death
registration and would dearly like to find it.)
* ** It is surprising that their son Silas was also married to an Elizabeth
Ann Armstrong, daughter of Wm B Armstrong and Ann Murphy of Clarendon. So I
am trying to establish the family connection between the 2 Elizabeths.
Marriage Record:
ARGUE, Robert, to Elizabeth Armstrong of Huntley, 15 Jan 1834, Huntley,
Rev. Williams, Witnesses: William Argue and Archibald McGee. (Marriage
Records of Upper Canada/Canada West Bathurst District 1831 - 1852 by Dan
Walker and Robert W. Calder, Volume 5, page 12.)
There is a Rev John B Armstrong who is involved in many of the early Argue
funerals and other vital events and I am wondering how he fits into the
picture. I suspect he was a brother of Wm B Armstrong but am seeking
confirmation and more information about him.
Question: Was the father of Wm B Armstrong DOD 4 April 1904, m Ann Murphy)
is John or
George?
One set of sources cites Wm B Armstrong's parents as:
John Armstrong ( DOB 1795/6 Sligo, DOD 27 Feb 1873) m. Mary (Brown)
Armstrong
and the other set of sources cites his father as:
George Armstrong (DOB 1782, DOD 1872 Clarendon) m. Anne Nixon (DOD 5
June
1851, Clarendon)
I notice in the Christian Guardian Obits there are 2 interesting citations
which may be pieces of the puzzle but I cannot seem to figure out how they
all fit together:
1. Armstrong, Mrs Anne, wife of G. Armstrong, and mother of Rev's J. and N.
Armstrong, Wesleyan ministers, was born near Maguiresbridge, Fernamagh,
Ireland, in 1788. In 1837 she came to Canada with her husband and 7
children, settling in Clarendon, C. E., whereArmstrong, John Sr. was born
in the town of Sligo, I., she died June 4 1851. -Aug. 27, 1851, p. 182, O.
2. Armstrong, John Sr. was born in the town of Sligo, I., in 1895, and was
moved when quite young to Cavan where his gmr. raised him in the
established church. In 1816, he md. Mary Brown of Beltonbit. In 1819, he
joined the M.
Ch. In 1822 he came to Cn., landing in Quebec on June 12th. After a short
stay in Bytown, he sd 10 m. north of there in Huntley. In 1845 he moved to
Clarendon, PQ, where he d. Feb 27, 1873; svd by his w., 6 sons, and 4 drs.
His 3rd son, John B. Armstrong, has been a WM minister since 1848. July 1,
1874, p. 207,0.
Many thanks again for your assistance, interest and great website.
Sincerely,
Corinne Sanderson (nee Argue)
