BOWES family, Pioneers in Gloucester Township, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Ireland to Bowesville
December 11, 2001:
Hi Al,
I see you recently unsubscribed and hope it's just to take a breather not
because of any problems. I have received the first film from St. Michael's
Corkery and have been noticing a few connections. I've been wondering if I
should order in the next film and so I went back to your website to check
the Huntley Twp. records. I have found this family that I'm wondering
about. On my paternal grandmother's Hughes side of the family from Perth I
have Owen Hughes & Rose Flood who arrived in Dalhousie Twp. in 1820. Their
daughter Margaret married Daniel Boes/Bowes but after that I've lost track.
Would you please check out these records to see who are the parents?

Who did all the transcribing? those records are hard to read being all
bunched up and everything. My hat's off to them. Are the transcribed records
actually for sale?
Thanks for your help,

This is part of a database of BMD for St. Michael's at Corkery. It's sorted alphabetically
and is complete except for some births (I think) beginning with the letters S to Z.
I received this a few years ago and said I wouldn't put it all on the Internet "but could I
do lookups?"
"Sure, fill your hat" she said.
Over time I've been fixing spelling and transcription "errors" but there's still a way to go.
The version at home is a lot more accurate (I think) by now.

Also, there were a gang of Hughes from County Armagh who settled in Gloucester Township after the
Rideau Canal was built (1826-1832). They and my McGee ancestors closely intermarried to the extent
that I believe there was a relationship going back to Ireland.
Now, not far from where they settled at South Gloucester was a place called "Bowesville" - where
the Ottawa International Airport is now. Any chance any of your Bowes people settled there?

Hi Al,
Thanks for your help with this family. I can now give you a better picture
of them plus a few other notes which may help other researchers (and me :-)
The records show both Boes and Bowes but I suspect the latter spelling is
the one to use. These are all Roman Catholic marriages of Lanark Co. but
since some were at Smith Falls, I suspect that there were cross overs
between Lanark & Renfrew Counties. The other family that I've been tracking
in both counties is Margaret's sister Mary who married 20-Aug-1845 Patrick
Doyle son of Thomas Doyle & Mary Kelly of Co Wexford. The Hughes's were
apparently from County Cavan and so don't seemingly relate to you Gloucester
folks although in Ireland???. Mary Hughes & Patrick Doyle lived in Montague
Township at one point.

ps What church were these baptisms recorded? St. Michael's? We went there a
couple of weeks ago after the Stittsville flea market and took a couple of
photos. Once developed, I can give you a copy which might be nice on the
website :-) We looked around Carp as well and Peter Robinson Rd.

Hello.
There was a family of Bowes who lived near Dan and Ellen Carroll. I remember when I was a
young fellow there was a little old lady, who came to Farrell's store in the evening and
they called her Rosie Bowes. I know that the Cassidy family were related to Bowes.
I will dig up the Census for Wakefield and see what I can find. I am about the oldest guy
around and the Cassidys are all gone. There is nobody that I can ask This Dan Carroll
mustn't have known who their relatives were. I never heard them mention these people.
I will drop a note next week and let you if I find out about these Bowes. You are correct
in saying they lived in Farrellton. There is a stained window in our church donated to the
memory of Thomas Carroll I will read what is exactly is on it. There were three different
families of Carroll living in Farrellton.

Hi, I saw your research on the internet about the Bowes family near Bowesville.
I am a direct descendant of the Bowes' who settled in Bowesville. I have many names
going back to 1830 in Bowesville but not before. Still trying to find out when and who
actually got here around then. Maybe we can help each other because I have a good list
of names and dates.

January 21, 2006:
Hi Terry - it has been passed down through family history that our Quinns were
second cousins to Richard Bowes. I believe that is why the Quinn's came to Bowesville
to settle.
When the Quinns came to Bowesville in 1840 the family included:
James and Nancy (the parents)
Elizabeth married to Patrick Brady
Ann married to Patrick Dunn
Martin married to Mary Connors (who settled right beside the Bowes in Bowesville)
Patrick
Michael
Do you know info on Richard Bowes and previous generations.
We must be related way, way back.
... Mary Quinn
