James and Nancy BROUGHAM
Ireland to Lanark County, Ramsay Township, Ontario, Canada

December 11, 2009:

Good Afternoon,
As some of you know we have been searching for any information at all on our great grandmother, Elizabeth Broughen aka
Brougham, Broughan.
We have recently come across a family, Broughen, from Lanark. Note that two of the children are just identified by their initials,
"P" and "E" in this 1861 census. We have ascertained that the "P" is Patrick and he is shown in the 1881 census as residing with
his mother, brother James and sister Sarah. The date of birth for the "E" Broughen would be very close to the date our great
grandmother was born but we have been unable to go any further as far as finding information on this person. We know Elizabeth
married William Moss in about 1870 so her family name would have changed with marriage.

If anyone knows this family or would have information on Elizabeth we would very much appreciate hearing from you as we have searched
over five years now.

Thank you.
Ann Martin

Kathy Simons and I have searched for Elizabeth for over five years now and have hit a dead end. This family
seems to be the closest we have come but until we can verify that this is indeed Elizabeth there is not much we
can do.

Interestingly, the mother of the children on the list was Nancy Hughes and we know that she
and her husband, James Brougham (again a different spelling) are buried at St. John's Anglican
Cemetery in Innisville.

We'll keep our fingers crossed that someone can make a connection.

Sincerely,
Ann

Ann:

I checked some RC Church records for this surname and the only record found was the following.
Brougham is not a common surname but we'll post this one just in case there is a connection:

Notre Dame Cathedral, Ottawa
6 Nov 1854
After dispensing with banns, marriage of Michael Stapleton of Bytown, adult son of Patrick Stapleton and Bridget Mawker / Mara,
to Sarah Moloney of Bytown, adult daughter of Dennis Maloney and Ann Brougham

December 13, 2009: Thanks to Anne Burgess for the following: Hi Al, That's an unusual name, and there were two families named Broughan on the CD of Fitzwilliam emigration records. One has been found and is listed on the above web page. BROUGHAN, Alice HENNESSY; Ann; John; James; Richard from Gowle, County Wicklow to Hungerford, ON And the other, with some of the same names, is attached. Here's what the Irish Times website gives on where Broughans might have come from: The table below shows the number of broughan households in each county in the Primary Valuation property survey of 1847-64. Carlow 1 Clare 4 Dublin city 2 Limerick 1 Longford 1 Tipperary 2 Wicklow 2 and here's the death certificate for William Broughan, Al - he seems to be the son of the Lanark family, but died in Kingston. His parents were James Broughan and Annie Hughes (who are buried at Innisville (Boyd Settlement?). Death Certificate -- William Brougham keyword from the above image: Carleton Place Source: ancestry.ca (there is more information included on this record at ancestry.ca). also, I remembered seeing the Brougham name in one of Annette Code's postings to B or B. It's in a list of people assisted to leave the Fitzwilliam Estate: May 13, 1842 Lucy Brougham & family, provisions 1 pound ... Anne Burgess
February 20, 2010: Good Morning, Ann et al, I found your search for Elizabeth on the Clarke Genealogy forum, and after a wide swing through the net, the Bytown site. Good Afternoon, Al, By all means, add my information. Meaning no disrespect, my interest in the Broughams is limited to Sarah's husband, ???? Clarke. He may be a very distant kin, as my Clarke line extends back to Newfoundland and to Dorset. On the other hand, I love a good mystery, and when it involves missing kin, even others', I'm hooked. I'll continue to keep my eyes out for Broughams, Broughens, the Moss surname, and others. Regards, Art. ___________________________________________ February 21, 2010: Thanks to Sue for the following additional detective work! Going through all the censuses, I notice that Elizabeth Brougham Moss is 'always' listed as Methodist. She married William Moss probably in late 1871 or early 1872 as William is single and living with his parents and siblings in the 1871 Sherbrooke South census. William is a son of Thomas and Martha Moss and I see that William and Elizabeth named their first daughter Martha, presumably after his mother. Their 2nd son was named Thomas, presumably after his father. Their 3rd son was named John Wesley Moss, the name of one of William's brothers. Henry was also the name of one of William's brothers. As for the other daughters, the 2nd daughter was named Margaret J., presumably Margaret Jane. None of William's sisters was a Margaret or a Jane, nor did he have a Sarah. Eliza could be named after her mother although Williams had a younger sister named Eliza and William did have a sister named Mary. So Margaret (Jane) and Sarah are odds on favourites for coming from Elizabeth's Brougham family. If she is the "E" in the 1861 Lanark census, she is Roman Catholic at the time - also where is she in the 1871 census? William is single and still living at home. Elizabeth's birth is all over the place. 1881 = 30, 1891 = 36, 1901 = 21 July 1848, and 1911 = July 1849 BUT the family is consistently Methodist. Given that, I would suspect that her marriage is registered in a Methodist church, probably in Lanark county as William didn't seem to wander much as he is always found in Sherbrooke South (1851-1891) until he moves to Maberly (1901 & 1911). Anyway, a few ideas which might help out. I wonder how her surname sounded to the census-taker's ear - could the census-taker have heard Brown and marked it down as such? Sue
New February 23, 2010: Very interesting information from Art and Sue, thank you. If the "E" Broughen in the 1861 census for Ramsay is actually Elizabeth then her religion at that time would have been Catholic. We're thinking that her religion changed when she married William as his family was Methodist. William died in 1925 and according to his death certificate he was buried in Maberly. Ann McPhail from Algonquin College sent us the obit for Elizabeth from the Perth Courier. (below) Given that information it looks like she was born about 1848. We had a researcher check the Archives in Toronto for a death certificate for her but none exists. She may have died in Saskatchewan but it is clear she was brought back to Maberly for burial. For some time we have tried to find the cemetery where she and William were buried but to no avail. The most logical one would be Laidley Cemetery in Perth as two of their children and the sister and brother of William and their wives are buried there. Unfortunately they do not have a records of a burial plot for them. We thought perhaps that if there was a record at the cemetery it might help us find the family of Elizabeth. Sincerely, Ann "Perth Courier August 27, 1937 Obit – Mrs. William Moss – Death came very peacefully to Mrs. William Moss on August 4 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W G Kirkham, where for the past years she has made her home. Deceased was 89 years of age and has been a resident of Maberly during the greater part of her life, where she resided with her husband, the late Mr. William Moss, who predeceased her 12 years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss five daughters and two sons. Mrs. Donnelly of Ottawa; Mrs. Waddell, of Montreal; Mrs. E. Keays and Mrs. L. Keays, of Tisdale, Saskatchewan; Mrs. W B Kirkham, Sask.; Henry of Smiths Falls and Thomas of Spruce Home, Sask. The funeral was held from the United Church, Maberly, the Rev. Mr. Sibley officiating. Floral offerings were: wreath from the family; sprays from Mr. & Mrs. Rogers and little Harold; Mrs. Edna Moss and family; the Mandevilles, Smiths Falls; Mr. & Mrs. Brinkman, Smiths Falls; Mr. & Mrs. Bert Shanks; Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Moore. Pallbearers were Messrs. J Churchill, E Tysick, G Grinley, A Kirkham, R Blair and K Kirham. “She is not dead but sleepeth”" On Sunday I spoke with the wife of the person in charge of Laidley Cemetery in Maberly. According to the records that the cemetery has Elizabeth and William are not there. They also checked Rokeby Anglican Cemetery and they are not buried there either. Did they cremate people in the 1920's and 30's? We are at a total loss now as to how we might find where they are buried. They lived in South Sherbrooke Township and Maberly all their lives yet there is no trace of their burial plots. Ann Martin
