In 1991, William J. Lawlis of Buckingham completed research on the Church Street Cemetery, the first RC cemetery in Buckingham. He published the
document below.
I've had a hard copy for about 10 years. I believe this information would be of interest to researchers of Buckingham area ancestors. With this in mind,
I contacted Mr. Lawlis recently to see if he would agree to having his research published on your site. He is happy to oblige.
The attached is original, converted to a word document format, which I hope can be used or adapted to bytown.net for inclusion on your Buckingham board.

Facts and Figures
1. The Cemetery is located in the south-west section of Buckingham, at 216 Church Street.
2. The grounds cover an area of approximately 2.5 acres being lots No. S2-706AC and 376 of the Town cadastre.
3. The administration and maintenance of the Cemetery is under the jurisdiction of Our Lady of Victory Parish.
4. At the present time we know the names of 674 who were buried here, but the total may well be closer to 800 in all when ongoing research is completed.
5. There were, it is be believed, a grand total of 200 or so monuments, iron and wooden crosses standing here at one time of which only 44 stones remain
and none without some damage.
6. During the last effort in preserving the Cemetery in the early 1980's all bits and pieces of monuments that were found were embedded in the 4 concrete
slabs around the central Monument below the 24 memorials which they preserve.
7. of the 44 monuments that remain, a survey shows:
o that 34 of them are of soft white Canadian marble, of which 29 are embedded in concrete, ( 24 around the Central Monument and 5 further
back) and 5 in a standing position. None of these monuments are in their original place;
o that 6 are of salt grey stone, al I in a standing position and all were re-located except but one;
o that 3 are of red granite, all standing and in their original place;
o finally, one is of grey granite and standing where it was originally erected.
8. Amongst those buried here were Mary O'Farrell in 1856 and Ann Brady in 1867, mother and sister respectively, of Father John Brady.
9. The name Church Street dates back to the very beginning of Buckingham, it being the trail from the Village to the Church and Cemetery, located
at that time in the outskirts, in the Township of Buckingham. Father John Brady has been honoured by the Town in having the Bridge, a Street
and a Park named after him.
10. The Cemetery was officially recognized as an "Historical Site" by the Town by a motion passed at a regular Meeting of the Town Council of Buckingham
held September 8th. 1964.
Some Highlights 1827 - 1990
1827 Father J.P. Roupe erects a cross marking the future site for a chapel.
1836 O'Neil family donate 10 acres of land for a Church, priest house and cemetery and for some subsistence farming.
1837 Father Pascal Brunet begins construction of a chapel. Father John Brady ordained in Montreal.
1840 Mission erected as a Parish. Father J. Brady appointed first Pastor.
1857 A larger Church is completed, in the Village, corner of Main and Denis.
1862 Father J. Brady retires as Pastor.
1879 Church Street Cemetery abandoned. New land on Main Street south acquired to replace it.
1881 Father J. Brady dies at the age of 83 and is buried in the crypt of the Church.
1890 A new Church, the 3rd, is erected and completed.
1891 Father Brady's remains translated from the old Church to the crypt of the new one.
1920 Church destroyed by fire.
1921 Re-built Church completed.
1940 Original Church property on Church St. fronting but excluding the Old Cemetery sold by Saint Gregory's Parish.
1942 An English speaking Parish is established under the Patronage of Our Lady of Victory.
1954 First attempt to restore old Cemetery begins, but shortly fails.
1962- A second attempt at restoring the Cemetery begins.
1962 Much is accomplished, especially the transfer of Cemetery property from St. Gregory's Parish to Our Lady of Victory. Despite all the efforts,
the work lapsed again.
1981 A third try in preserving the Cemetery resumes and this time round is successful. The results obtained are remarkable. The re-dedication and
blessing of the Cemetery took place on Sunday May 25th, 1986 in a ceremony presided by Father F. Langevin, M.S., Pastor of Our Lady of
Victory Parish in the presence of a large number of Parishioners.
1990 A mass, at the Cemetery proper, is celebrated on Sunday June 17th, 1990 by Fr. D. Jeffrey, M.S, Pastor of Our Lady of Victory Parish before a
large congregation of Parishioners and guests.

The names of 673 persons, now known, who were buried in this Cemetery were obtained from 3 sources, namely ….
List "A" This list of names was transcribed from the 44 monuments that were preserved. A sketch of the Cemetery grounds as well as sketches of
these monuments with their inscriptions, are herein included for reference.
List "B" The names on this list were derived from the Register of Cemetery names as on display in the lobby of Our Lady of Victory Parish Church.
List "C" This list of names was retrieved from Bulletin No. 3 issued by " l'Outaouais Genealogique" in 1982 being an abstract of the Register
Acts of St. Gregory's Parish for the years 1836 to 1862.
