In Search of Timothy BYRNE / Timothy BURNS
Ireland to Eastern Ontario
September 15, 2008:
Hi Al:
I'll let you digest this first part, and will continue when I get back from the gym.
I really wish now that I had the register for St. Mark's, Prescott, although it was tough
to read. I'd get a lot more from it today.
So, to start with, here's this Richmond marriage of the daughter of Patrick Kehoe of
Marlborough Twp:
11 Oct 1846: John Byrn, son of Silvester Byrn and Catharine McDonnell, Parish of
Clonagall?, Ireland, and Elinor Kehoe, daughter of Patrick Kehoe and Jane Brazzle,
Parish of Tomacork?, county Wicklow; witness Patrick Kehoe
(Also in 1846, no month given, in St. Mark's, Prescott: Richard Thorpe, s/o William Thorpe
and Margaret Burns, married Mary Burns, d/o Silvester Burns and Catherine McDonald,
Co. Carlow; wit: Patrick --- and Ann Gahen)
John Byrne was previously married to Ally Kinsella; she is buried with him in Throoptown
Cemetery (Augusta?), as is his 2nd wife, Ellen Kehoe. Also buried with them is Sylvester
Byrne, d.1864, at 17 yrs., the transcription says.
Here’s the Clonegall, County Wicklow, Ireland, parish baptism of Catherine, who is the
child of that name living with John B and Ellen Kehoe in 1851 Augusta, attached. (Ally
Kinsella was presumably also the mother of the child Mary, also living with them, and
b. interestingly in NY state, USA.):

I had asked John to search for Sylvester Byrne some time back, and was unhappy that he
couldn't be found in Wicklow, but this little bit of the report looks good today:
"TITHE APPLOTMENTS
The following BYRNES all lived at MONAUGHRIM in Co. CARLOW which is just up the road from
CLONEGAL VILLAGE and borders on WICKLOW. They all had very small plots of land, only big
enough for a cottage and garden I would think and obviously all related :
I also list those McDONNELL/McDANIEL/McDONALD, etc.
THOMAS BYRNE 35 PERCH
SYLVESTER BYRNE 28 PERCH
NICHOLAS BYRNE 1 ROD 8 PERCH
SARAH BYRNE 26 PERCH
PATRICK BYRNE 1 ROD 7 PERCH
CATHERINE BYRNE 3 ROD 8 PERCH
ANNE BYRNE
TIMOTHY BYRNE
Buried close to John Byrne and wives in Throoptown Cemetery (about 6 plots over, if I read
the transcription page correctly, is:
- James Burns, d. April 16, 1875, age 66 years, Native of Co. Wicklow Ireland
- Ann, wife of James Burns, died June 16, 1885, age 76 yrs.
Buried next to them are the Thorpes (who came from Cronyhorn, like Patrick Kehoe of
Marlborough).
Here are the James Burns / Anne Thorpe couple's kids - baptisms in Clonegall parish:
1838 May 13 Byrne Patrick James Thorpe Anne Bornamanagh
15 Sep 1839 901 Catherine Byrne Jas Byrne Anne Thorp Wm. Thorp Anne Hanlon
1841 Oct 10 Byrne Judith James Thorp Anne Bornamonia
On the townland map, the place is spelled Barnamuinga, and it borders Coolross (where
FW Arthur Byrne / Eliza Kehoe lived, before they came to Augusta).
From St. Mark's, Prescott register, another child for this James Burns couple:
Bapt. of Sarah
d/o James Burns and Anne Thorp
Sp: James Kehoe and Mary Whelan

September 16, 2008:
Hi again, Al:
You can see the same Irish naming pattern at work in the two Byrne/Burns families.
In 1851 Oxford Twp. you have
James Byrne and Anne Thorpe, 45 and 43
- Silvester, 19
- Timothy, 15 (married Margaret Isabelle Mooney, d/o James Mooney and Catherine Whelan))
- Thomas, 12 (married Alice Mooney)
- Cath., 9 (married John Cullen, Augusta)
- Julia, 7
- Mary, 5
- Sarah, 3 (married Robert McCoy)
- Wm., 2
(Mary, Sarah, and Wm. were b. Can.; the others in Ire.)
------------------------------------------------------------
Timothy and Thomas Byrne and their Mooney wives were in Allegeny Twp., Cattaraugus County,
NY State, in 1900, living in or near Knapp Creek. These Byrne sons were involved in the oil
business, according to family sources, along with a brother, John. (I haven't found this
John in 1851 Oxford Twp.)
------------------------------------------------------------
In 1851 Augusta Twp. you have, I believe, James Byrne's brother, John, living close to the
Thorpe / Tarp family:
John Byrne and wife Ellen Kehoe, b. Ire. 35 and 24
- Catherine, 11, b. Ire.
- Mary, 9 [b. NY state]
(children of John Byrne and first wife, Ally Kinsella)
Jane, 3, b. Can.
Silvester, 2
(children of John Byrne and Ellen Kehoe)
-----------------------------------------------------
Ally Kinsella Byrne died at age 27; Ellen Kehoe Byrne died in 1873, age 44; John Byrne
d. 1891, age 85. In 1881, he was a widower, living in Augusta with an Elizabeth Burns,
age 20, and a Thomas Burns, age 19.
John Byrne and Ellen Kehoe probably had other children, but there are no records online.
St. Mark's in Prescott would likely have baptismal records, and they would solidify the
case for James and John Byrne being brothers.
But the very puzzling question remains:
Why did Timothy Byrne, s/o James Byrne and Ann Thorpe (who were dead by 1893), living in
Knapp Creek NY, marry Margaret Isabelle Mooney in 1893 at St. Brigid's in Osgoode / Manotick?
The Ont. marriage registration shows Margaret Isabelle to have been living in Knapp Creek at
the time, as well, but her place of birth was Merrickville.
The church record, attached, shows Margaret Isabelle as d/o James Mooney and Catherine
Whelan, "of this mission of Ste. Brigitte de Manotick."
Can you see any connection to any of your Byrnes, Al?

October 22, 2008:
Hi Al,
If you're looking for a headache today, I thought I'd report on finding two more Byrne
families in Augusta who used the name Timothy.
One is the attached 1851 page that begins with Ellen Byrne; the family is headed by Eugene
(=Owen in Irish) at the bottom of the previous page.

The other is the following wild-card Timothy, whose descendants are still searching for a
marriage record and connections:

I think this Timothy's parents are this next couple, also from 1881 Augusta, and on the
same page, are they not? The Irish naming pattern sort of fits them.

At last count, there were at least 6 Byrne families in early Augusta, and several of the
other family names there had Byrne wives.

November 2, 2008:
As usual, thanks to Sue for the following detailed research!
I think the Priest made a mistake as Margaret Mooney is with her parents in the
1891 North Gower, Carleton as Moonie (perhaps she thought the question was where will you be
making your home?):
James, 63
Catherine, 59
Margaret, 25
Alice/Alie, 23
Archibald, 21

In both the 1900 and 1910 Allegheny twp, New York censuses, she says that she emigrated to
the US in 1893, so presumably right after her wedding to Timothy (who was alread living in
New York).

In both the 1900 and 1910 Allegheny, New York censuses, Thomas Burns says he
emigrated to the US in 1866 and wife
Alice says she emigrated in 1893. Alice died sometime between 1900 and 1910 as
Thomas is a widower in the 1910. Timothy and Margaret are also in the 1900 and 1910
Allegheny, New York censuses (no children) and Timothy died sometime between 1910
and 1920 as Margaret is a widower in the 1920. In the 1900 census, immediately
next door to Timothy and Margaret, is John Burns, born Ireland, oil producer. And in
the 1920 census, widow Margaret is next door to brother Archie and widowed mother
Catherine. No one is left in the 1930 Allegheny twp., New York census.
__________________________
According to the various censuses, James Burns died sometime between 1871 and 1880 -
and he was born abt 1807(1852 census) or 1800 (1861 census) or 1793 (1871 census), so
if he is the one who died in 1875 at just 66 years of age when he was actually anywhere
from 68 - 82 years of age.
Ann died after 1880 and before 1900, probably in New York. According to the various
censuses, she was born 1809 (1852 census) or 1808 (1861 census) or 1810 (1871 census)
or 1810 (1880 census), or 1810 (1881 census) so she was pretty consistent and was born
1809/1810. If this is her who died in 1885 at age 76, then this could indeed be her.
Hope this helps,
... Sue
