Arthur BYRNE and Eliza KEHOE
County Wicklow, Ireland to Augusta Township, Ontario, Canada, c. 1848

New April 16, 2008:

Hello Al

I've prepared a bit of info on my Fitzwilliam Estate family - that of Arthur and Eliza Byrne
from Coolross. There's a little blurb about the family, a photo of their son Edward
Burns (my 2nd great grandfather) and his wife Eliza McCullough. This is followed by an
outline of descendants for 4 generations, one or two of the fourth generation are
still living and are marked as such, not with their actual names. I have a couple more
generations but prefer not to publish names of living people. It would be nice if
someone recognized the Thorpe or Black surnames as I'm a little short of info on them.

... Ann Burns

Arthur Byrne and his wife Elizabeth Kehoe Byrne left the FW estate and sailed to Quebec
in 1847. Family lore has it that they spent the first winter in Chicoutimi with the
Indians (NP). What brought them there initially and then later, presumably in 1848,
to Grenville County is unlikely to ever be known. Over the years the spelling of the
family name has changed to Burns or Byrnes. Although referred to as Bess in the FW
document, Elizabeth was always known as Eliza in Canada.
Fitzwilliam Tenants - Family Group

Year Listed: 1847
Surname Byrne
Reference No.86

Group Members: Arthur 55, Bess 50, William 26, Edward 22, Eliza 20, Margaret 19,
George 14, Mary 12, Anne 10, Arthur 6, Jane 3 mths.

The 1851 Canadian census shows George, Arthur and Ann living with their parents in
Augusta. Daughter Mary apparently lived in Ogdensburg, NY, USA, but was visiting the
family at the time of the census. Daughter Eliza was married to Patrick Thorpe / Tarp
and living with his family. Edward was known to be in the area of Morristown or
Ogdensburg, NY as he married there that year. I believe Margaret was working as a
domestic in Elizabethtown. No trace has been found so far of William, who might have
moved elsewhere on his own or possibly died en route. Baby Jane most likely died on
the journey.

I have been able to trace many of the descendants of this original family to at
least the early 20th century but since privacy laws restrict the availability of
government records, that's where much of the information ends. My own line descended
from Edward. Living relatives have filled in most of the gaps. Here is a photo of
Edward with his wife Eliza McCullough Burns taken probably in the 1870s or 80s.
They farmed north of what is now Brockville on the Brickyard Road.

> Here are 4 generations of the descendants of Arthur and Eliza Byrne.
