Hello:
Thanks for responding to my e-mail
The Patrick Carroll who lived on next farm was one who married Rita Hendrick
I don't want to confuse you but I have a little different story on Carrolls, The original
Carroll house is still on old Carroll property. It is a renovated Log House.
It is now owned by daughter of Harvey Kelly who farms the property.
The Dan Carroll who married Harriet Lennon lived on the homestead for some years The most of
their family was born there before they moved to Farrellton
near old Poupore station. They later built a house across the river. Dan was a salesman and
was away a lot and Harriet kept switch board for telephone co.
Dan was son of Dan & Ellen Swain I always thought.
Their children were:
Harriet M Oliver Levesque
John M Theresa Bradley
Gertrude Single
Wilfred M Eleanor Vachon
Patrick M Rita Hendrick
Francis M a sister of Wilfred's wife
Sabina M Jos. McGoey
The Carrolls and us lived a few hundred yards apart when they lived in Farrellton.
I am sorry to say they have all passed on. Their families have all have left and live
some where in City. Wifred's wife lives in Seniors home in Wakefield.
Dan Sold Farm Machinery (Frost & Wood) from his shop in Farrellton after he got older.
John and Wilfred worked on Railroad, Francis was carpenter and construction foreman for
many years Patrick farmed on next farm to me It was old Lannon place (His Uncle)
James Carroll was married to Ann Lannigan and lived and farmed in Egan Twp. These
family of Carrolls are related to my wife through Lannigans.
The children of Annie and James are:
Patrick b Oct 19, 1934
Carmel b June 13,1936
Elizabeth b Jan 23, 1938
Rachel b July 23, 1939
Alvira b May 3, 1942
The Lannigans and Carrolls are related other ways . I will have dig that up.
Someway I will send other info if you want to listen to me after all this

Joy,
On the Daniel O'Carroll and Ellen Swain page on Bytown or Bust, you mention that Patrick
Carroll was married for a second time to Anne Kelly. Do you know who Anne Kelly's
parents were?

December 13, 2002:
Greetings folks!
I am Lawrence P. Carroll son of Thomas Patrick Carroll (b. Dec 20, 1906; d.
Oct 6, 1970) and Mary Rita Hendrick (b. Oct 25, 1916). Ray Daly has contributed
substantially to the facts in this file.
My brother Edward Joseph Carroll (b. May 7, 1948; d. June 25, 1984) was
unmarried at time of his death, by accident (pedestrian hit by car in
Gatineau Qc June 24, 1984)
We grew up on the old Lannen farm next to Ray Daly, on what I think is now
known as Woods Road which runs from Hwy 105 (previously known as Hwy 11) to
a T intersection, at which corner the families of Daniel Carroll, son John
(Sean) and later my grandfather Daniel lived. All of Dan (II's) children
were born there.
The second Daniel Carroll (Dan II) (b. Apr 5, 1875 d. 1944 in Farrellton)
married Harriet Lannen (b. Dec. 8, 1872) , these are my grandparents. Prior
to her marriage to Dan she lived with the Kilfoyle (Guilfoyle) family on the
farm where I grew up, next to Ray Daly.
There's a long story here about the Lannens, I won't bore you with it now.
The 1901 census in now fully available on the internet (search - National
Archives Canada) and it shows four people living on said farm: Daniel Carroll,
Harriet Carroll, Mary-Ann Carroll, sister age 12, and Catherine Knox, "G Mother"
of Dan (head of house) (b. Mar. 17, 1824, Ireland) age 77.
1881 census shows Daniel Carroll, age 6 and John Carroll, farmer, age 37, head
of household.
John married Honora Knox and as far as I know they had four children, three girls
and one son Dan. The girls were Mary-Ann (known as Mary) who married Ray Halliday
and lived for many years on Sunnyside Ave in Ottawa, Katie who married Joe Murray
and lived in Low Quebec and a third sister whose name I cannot recall, but I think
she married a MacDonald, and lived in Ottawa, and may possibly have divorced and
married a second time.
The 1891 census could be very revealing here, I have never seen it, its' not on
the net and I have not been to the archives in 25 years.
I would be pleased to share information with, or answer questions from
anyone interested.

Hi Larry:
Thanks very much for your e-mail. It sure is a small world.
You and I are the same age. Are you related to the Terry family from Ottawa?
The best man at my wedding was Ken Terry. His mom may have been a Farrell or
Carroll - he had relatives in Farrellton and Chelsea.
One of his cousins from there was Lawrence Farrell or Carroll, about our age.
He also had cousins named Hendrick who lived in Port Hope.
Talk to you soon.

Hello Al, I am the cousin Lawrence Carroll. Ken Terry is my first cousin and his
mother Teresa was my mother's sister as well as my Godmother. You talk about a
small world.
Did you live near Ken when they lived on Arlington St in Ottawa, if so I think
I remember you.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Larry

also from Larry and posted on December 13:
The 1901 census shows:
Family #39 Daniel Carroll (g son of original Daniel) and wife Harriet Lannen
Family #40 Martin Bowes b. 9 Nov 1822, Ireland age 77, and
Elizabeth Bowes b. 4 Jun 1827, Ireland age 73
son Robert Bowes b. 7 jun 1852, Quebec.
Comment: by this time both Daniel and Ellen have passed away
John (Sean) and Honora Knox have also passed on.
I do not know at this time the location of the Bowes farm but I am guessing
that it is very close to the Daniel Carroll homestead.

Related families in the Chelsea / Farrelton area in the 1800s were Mulvihill ,
Hendrick , and Daly families.
September 29, 2005:
I am writing to ask if any of the Carroll correspondents have a Catherine Carroll
in their lines.
Catherine Carroll, born in Co. Kerry in 1799, died Sept. 12, 1889. She was married in
1836 in Ottawa, in a Catholic Church, to William Hatton (b. Co. Tyrone in 1805).
Catherine and William farmed near Coldwater, ON, and in 1841 moved to Sydenham Township,
Grey County. They had six sons, two of who died in the Cholera epidemic in 1848.
Catherine Carroll Hatton is buried in the Hatton Family Cemetery on the family farm,
near Owen Sound, ON.
Any assistance identifying members of Catherine's family or suggestions about where
I might search would be appreciated.
Cheers - Bruce Hurley
August 25, 2010: Another Early Carroll family in the Ottawa area?
Recently found this site and am trying to make connections of my family.
Daniel Roy Carroll is my grandfather and is the son of Daniel Francis Carroll. My grandfather married
Mary Margeret Larkin in 1920. She is the daughter of Michael Larkin and Hannah O'Connell. I am looking for
info on Michael and Hannah. Roy Carroll had 2 brothers Ivan 1901-1902 and Norbert 1899-1920.
He also had a sister Anna 1897-1939 who I believe married John Edwin Kelly in 1925 at St Joseph Church in Ottawa.
I have no further info on Anna so if anyone has info I would be glad of the help.
Al
You may add my e-mail to your site. Since I live so far away any help I can get get on the Larkin and Carroll
family will be most welcome. I am also looking for any info I can find on my Dad's side. His Father John Smith
(son of John Smith and Mary Connell) married Alice Mulroney (daughter of James Mulroney and Sophia St Amand.)
John was the son of Maxwell and Mary Hamilton Smith and Mary was the daughter of Michael and Johanna Cronin Connell.
The family grew up in the Byward Market area off King Edward Ave and my Dad grew up at 68 Sussex St.
Thanks again

September 9, 2010:
My mother-in-law is a McGoey from the Gatineau Valley. Her mother was Sabina McGoey nee Carroll.
Sabina’s father was Daniel Carroll and her mother was Harriet. Daniel and Harriet lived in Farrelton
across from the river.
Harriet worked as an operator and Daniel sold, amongst other things, woodstoves and lightning rods.
My mother in law has a pamphlet for lightning rods that shows a picture of Dan Carroll and another person
standing in front of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. He had sold lightning rods that were installed
there after the fire. My husband is the spitting image of Dan Carroll. We spent some time in Martindale and
Farrellton looking up the family history and found who we believe to be the original Daniel Carroll’s gravestone
which indicates he was from County Cavan Ireland. This would have been grandfather to my husband’s greatgrandfather.
It is clear that there are two Daniel Carroll’s in the Wakefield area coming from Ireland around the same time that
were not related ( in Ireland we learned that Carroll is like Smith). We were able to trace the McGoey family back 7
generations but could not determine anything further about our Daniel Carroll.
Any information you may have would be helpful. My mother-in-law said there was a family story that the original
Daniel Carroll came up through the United States but when we tracked down the McGoey family we confirmed that the
original McGoey brothers had in fact come to Quebec through the USA so it is possible that the stories
are confused but we do not know.
Thanks

Thanks to Taylor Kennedy for the following research:
Hi Mary
From my research, The Daniel Carroll tombstone, from County Mayo is your husband's line. He was married to Ellen Swain.
Had several children before he died in May of 1861. Son John Carroll born about 1844 married Hannah Knox, their son
Daniel married in 1899 to Harriet Lannen who were the parents of Sabina born in 1911 who married Joseph James McGoey in
Farrelton. I pursued this line for 2 reasons, Mary Carroll married a McCrank who my Kennedy line ties into,
also Thomas Carroll married Cunningham, another connection. I am attaching a word doc file with some of the data I speak of. I hope this helps.
Take care
Taylor Kennedy

February 2, 2011:
Hello and Regards,
Dorthea Dora Carroll was my maternal grandmother who married a Lanigan / Lannigan. My parents Felicia Jette
(born in Gracefield, Ont) and James Lanigan (descendent of Martin Lanigan – who’s family immigrated from Ireland
and settled on Lanigan’s Island on the Gatineau River) often visited with the Thomas Carroll family who
lived in Toronto.
My parents are now deceased and I wonder if it’s possible that someone can assist with the explanation on how
Thomas Carroll who Married June ? is related to myself.
With many thanks,
Debra Lanigan

Thanks to Michael Daley for the following reply to Debra:
Hi Debra Rees
Your dad James Lanigan ,was first cousin to Thomas Carroll, your
maternal grandmother ,Dora Carroll was a sister to Thomas Carroll
father ,Joe [Joseph] Carroll ,
Your maternal grandmother Dora Carroll, was the daughter of John
Joseph Carroll & Elizabeth Daley, five sons & two daughters were born to this couple.
hope this helps, Michael Daley
Debra ,if my memory serves me right, I met your dad ,Jim Lanigan
at Thomas & June 25th anniversary in Toronto many years ago.
you can verify this for me,
Question , did your dad sing Irish songs. that night he sang that
beautiful song, " I'll take you home again Kathleen"
if not I'm in the wrong pew.???
your Elizabeth Daley ,born Farrelton Quebec is no relation
to me, my Daley's settled in the flatlands of Osgoode Township ,on the same lands where I was born,
grew up ,married. expect to die here [ but not right away ]. I've known the Carroll family for many years.
Tommy brother, Albert and his wife Leta Thompson came to work on a farm in Osgoode Township,in 1945.?
and eventually buying a farm close to my family . and to make a long story short, Leta thompson one of 14, had
a younger sister ,Betty, and she married me ,well 6 sons and four daughter's and 60 years later we are still here.
Tommy Carroll wife was June Gratto ,of New Glasgow Nova Scotia

Hello Mike,
I appreciate your comment regarding Elizabeth Daley (Farrelton Quebec) as I do not have the memories you have. It’s
wonderful to hear that you knew the Carroll family directly and I’ll certainly do more checking on the Elizabeth
Daley line as you are likely to know best.
From your email I understand that Tommy Carroll and Albert were brothers. Do you have any information on their parents?
I guess I’m going on… but thought you would want to know that your comments have been appreciated. It’s very helpful that
you know the name of Auntie June (as we called her) who was married to Uncle Tommy ~ all I could remember was that her
family was from eastern Canada and I was thinking New Brunswick, so New Glasgow would fit and ultimately this would
be New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. It would have taken quite some time to find her last name Gratto.
Again, thank you so much.
Best ~ Debra Rees

Hello Allan,
Thanks to the assistance of Michael I have now been able to fill in many of the questions I had in relation
to my relationship with Thomas Carroll ~ and now know for sure that I am a first cousin 1x removed ~ which is excellent.
If it’s helpful for you to have my contact info posted on the website that would be fine. Perhaps somewhere down the road
I too can be of assistance.
Kind Regards,
