James CASEY and Maria HAWLEY
County Tipperary, Ireland to Ottawa, Canada

November 28, 2003:
To all of you, the following is Maria Hawley, eldest daughter of Roderick Hawley and Ann Kennedy.
I still have one more female to find as per the 1842 census.

Take care my friends
Taylor Kennedy

Descendants of Maria Hawley

Generation No. 1

1. MARIA2 HAWLEY (RODERICK1)1 was born 1825 in Tipperary, Ireland, and
died October 27, 1898 in Torbolton, Ontario. She married JAMES CASEY April
27, 1847 in Notre Dame Basilica, Bytown, Ontario, Canada.

Notes for MARIA HAWLEY:
Maria Hawley does not appear as a member of her father's household since
she was
already married to James Casey. As she was born in 1832 she would have been
between Ann and John--a little bit of a problem here as John is shown as
born in 1832 so lets say he was born in 1831. The Census was sometimes a year or so
out in some cases.

The family is shown as living in a log shanty so the genteel life we heard
so much about--and there must be a grain of truth in it--must have been in
Ireland and possibly during the generation before Maria's Maria, according
to the above details was about four years old when they emigrated so no
eloping with the stableboy. Quite a lot about the Irish of Tipperary in Nepean in
`The City Beyond' by Bruce Elliott.
On the tomb stone at St. Isadore's graveyard in S. March her name is
spelled Halley. (Possibly written by someone phonetically spelling
"Hawley".)

(The above information was provided by Jane Cote.)
The Hawley family emigrated to Nepean township in Carleton County and the
farm of Maria's father was in Concession 1 11, lot four in Nepean, now part of the City of Ottawa. Not a
very fertile piece of land as the best was already taken before they
arrived. They came from Tipperary, probably from an area in the north of the
county a short distance from the River Shannon. The info I found on them
is in the Census of 1851. They emigrated in 1835. The last child to be born
in Ireland made her appearance in 1834. In 1837 the first child was born in
Canada. Their parish was St. Patrick's, Fallowfield which is now well
within the confines of Ottawa. They obviously arrived with very little
money as by 1842 they did not own their own land and did not produce
crops--only some wool and flannel. They did own 10 cows, 2 horses and 5 hogs.

Alma (Brennan) O'Hara (whose mother was Jane (Casey) Brennan, sister of
Sr. St. Mark) told of how when she was a child she asked her aunt, Sr. St.
Mark, how she managed in the nun's habit in hot weather. Sr. St. Mark said,
"I don't know about the others but on really hot summer days I don't wear
any panties. Every now and then I get a lovely cool breeze." For the rest
of her life, Alma wondered about every nun she saw on a hot summer day.

was employed by Col. W. Potter; Potter soon placed him in charge of the
store in Grand Rapids. Patrick married Emma E. Killeen on June 26, 1882 in
Fitzroy Harbour , Ontario and moved permanently to Aitkin.

When David Willard retired Mr. Potter offered Casey Willard's interest in
the business and it soon became known as Potter-Casey Company.

When he died in 1910, T.R. Foley said, "The Catholics of this community
have Mr. Casey to thank for the beautiful church we have, more than any
other man in the village."

Information provided by Celestine Olson and Mrs. Patrick Casey, Jr. for a
book on the pioneers in the area.

Notes for DENNIS BRENNAN:
This info from Jane Cote (mother: Erma Brennan)
I did some more searching in the Archives du Quebec and found the record of
the purchase of the farm of Dennis Brennan and Jane Casey, both of whom
signed the document since it also included a mortgage that they had to
take out to acquire the land. I was much relieved to see that Dennis could
sign his name in a half literate manner. As we already knew, Jane Angela
Casey who was in school until she married , had a plain but obviously
practised hand. I got photocopies of that and many others.

Notes for LEE THOMAS EDWARD O'HARA:
Lee O'Hara's father spent a couple of years in
New Orleans, following the American Civil War. Thomas was a carpenter and
probably worked at that trade. The family with whom he boarded had a son
named Lee after the General, Robert E. Lee. Joseph was quite taken with
this boy and decided that if he ever had a son he would name him after
this boy. When Lee went into the army in 1914 he was upset and his father
was distressed to find that Lee's
baptismal certificate (no birth certificates in those days ) was made out as
Leo.
Dad's father had some words with the priest, who was still available, and
who explained that the son had to be named after a saint. My grandfather is
reputed to have replied , "There's got to be a first one. Dad never made
sainthood but he did retain the name Lee for the rest of his life.

March 4, 2004: I found your James Casey - Maria Hawley tree in Bytown or Bust. Since the only mention of Simon seems to be that he went west to Alberta ( actually it was Saskatchewan ), I felt you should know that he didn't quite disappear. I have only shown the names of the deceased members of this branch. One of my sons is married to a great grandson of Simon Casey and Mary Ann Smith One of their sons, Thomas Sylvester, had 8 children, 19 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren, and, so far, 2 great great grandchildren. New March 9, 2014: Dear A.G. Lewis, I was reviewing the page for "Bytown or Bust" and came across your contact information. I am looking for some data on my great grandparents James Casey and Maria Hawley who were married in Notre Dame Basilica on April 27, 1847. I have the marriage and death documentation. However, I am looking for such things as newspaper announcements of the wedding or other documentation to determine a clue as to James's and his father Patrick's origins in Ireland. Are you able to provide any suggestions? Thank you ... Bill Casey _____________________________ Good evening, Mr. Casey: Thanks for your e-mail. I had a quick look through the Notre Dame records for 1847 and found the following: 26 May 1847 After dispensing with banns, marriage of James Casey of Bytown, adult son of Patrick Casey and Mary Redmond of County Tipperary, to Maria Hawley of Bytown, daughter of Roddy / Roderick Hawley and Ann Kennedy of County Tipperary, Ireland. Witnesses: James Tierney & Stephen Dwyer Source: Drouin Records at ancestry.ca The date is slightly off from what you have but maybe the Priest or the transcriber differed from what you have. Taylor Kennedy has done a lot of work on these families. His family pioneered at the farm where Jockvale Road meets the railway tracks .. see www.bytown.net/wkennedy.htm . Hi Taylor. Is it OK with you if I add your e-mail to our web site as a contact for other Casey, etc. researchers? Please let me know. Thanks again, ... Al Lewis _______________________________ Hello Al & Bill Bill, I have never checked for any newspaper articles regarding the Casey Clan. I limited my search to the Hawley clan at the time but did get into contact with a Mr. O'Hara way back with regards to Casey / Hawley data. {website noted below} I did check some Family Trees posted on Ancestry.ca and they note the following; James CASEY Birth 1823 in Abbeyleix, County Laois (Queens), Ireland - No Proof shown Death 12 FEB 1893 in Torbolton Twp., Dunrobin, Ontario Source: http://ohara.com/genealogy/Family/61.htm This data but does give you an avenue to pursue. I am attaching their tombstone from St. Isadore Church in March Township. What Al has on Bytown or Bust is the what I have. ... Taylor Kennedy ________________________________ Thank you, Taylor, for your note. I am grateful to you and Al for your responses. I particularly appreciate the photo. I do have some data from St. Isadore's Cemetery Register. The note I have for James and Maria is sketchy, no family member that I have talked to has been able to pin point a location for James and Patrick. They all, however, confirm Maria's roots as being Tipperary. I have a visual memory from some years back of a newspaper clipping for some family event (wedding or anniversary) that referenced James' parents Patrick and Mary coming from Abbeyliex and Barnikill Parish. For the life of me I can not locate this clipping or remember where I saw it. So it may well be off base. I do know from contact with individuals in Abbeyliex that there are both Casey's and Redmond's in the Abbeyleix region today. All the best. ... Bill
