I am aware of the Clelands from Osgoode as well as the Clelands from
LaChute but I can't make any connection between them and my great-grandfather
William Cleland. The earliest record that I can find of him is the 1851
census of Hull,Quebec where I find him working as a hired man for his
future father-in-law Hugh Turney. One thing I find somewhat odd is that
some of my Clelands wound up living in Carleton Place.

November 6, 2006:
Gentlemen,
I ran across www.bytown.net/cleland.htm this evening and am very excited. I’m
hoping you may help me find a link with William Cleland of Mountain /
West Osgoode and my line.
My GGGG grandfather, Thomas Cleland, was born 1798 in County Down and settled in
Edwardsburg, Grenville Co. before 25 Oct 1830 (the date my GGG grandfather
William Thomas was born). Thomas was married to Mary McClaffery but I’m not
sure if they were married in Ireland or Canada. They had six other children
beside William Thomas (who married Catherine Urania Orr): Mary, John, James Elias
(m. Marinda Marlatt), Elizabeth Jane (m. William David Giffin), Robert, Thomas
Alexander (m. Elizabeth Lamson).
I know my line communicated with Cleland family members in Dundas County, I just
don’t know how they were connected.
If you have any information on a connection, I would be very grateful to hear back from you.
Thank you,
... Elizabeth Boggs
