Mathew COBEY / COVEY and Bridget GIBBONS
also Richard GIBBONS

July 5, 2004:

Hi Al;
I just read your info to Mark. In fact I found info on my grandmother's side
(Poitras) on your site.
Do you by chance have any info on a Mathew Cobey who married Bridget Gibbons
around the early 1840's in Templeton. I traced my name back to 1841 and my
gg grandfather was Mathew Cobey / Coby. He was first married to Mary Farley
sometime before 1843, I don't know if in Canada or Ireland but found out they
had a child James Cobey in 1843 and then sometime later Mary must have died
because he married Bridget Gibbons in Templeton and had more children. He also
had two other children before James- -Patrick (b 1836) and Philip (b 1838) both
born in Ireland whether it was with Mary Farley or not I do not know. He is
on the 1841-2 census in Quebec (Templeton) with his land #. and he is on the 1851
census, same area and all his family are registered there with Bridget Gibbons.
(Patrick, Philip, James, Rose, Bridget, Jean, Mary.)
It really solved a great deal of questions for me when I found out that Philip
(Covey) was not the only son.
I always heard the Duffy, Casey and Langill names were somewhere in the family tree
but never knew where.
I cannot seem to find any info on when he married Bridget or when Mary Farley must
of died. I know he was in Canada in 1841 and probably came from Ireland around
1840 because Philip states he was 2 yrs old when he came from Ireland. How they came,
I have no idea.
Any insight would be appreciated.
... Barbara (Colby) Hawes

You will find cemetery records for Mathew COBEY / COVEY at Sean McConnery's
Quebec Cemeteries Site (at the Perkins cemetery, I think ... Al).

New August 14, 2005: Hi ! Upon reading Barbara's input, I have relatives that married Covey/ Cobey. One of them was Philorum TAMBEAU b,1893 from Perkins Quebec, he married James Covey's widow. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Powers, b,1894. James was killed in 1916 on the market in Ottawa, by an Ottawa policeman. There was a pitch fork involved in that incident, and the Officer was charged with murder, and later acquitted. The other one would be my Dad's cousin Thomas Casey b,1889, married Margaret Covey/Cobey b, 1888. As for me, I'm trying to find out what ship my g/grandfather was on. He was Patrick Casey and came from Ireland in 1847. He was married in Ottawa in 1852 to Margaret Farmer. She came from Ireland in July of 1848, I believe on a ship called The JEANIE. Any info in this matter would be appreciated. ... Phil Casey. casph@videotron.ca
