William CRAIG and Christina SWAN
also Adam CRAIG and Janet GEMMILL
from Lanark Scotland to
Eastern Ontario in 1820
February 27, 2009:
William Craig, Calabogie Janet Gemmill & Adam Craig to Canada from
Brother of Adam Craig Lanark, Scotland in 1820.
Note: These Craig and Gemmill families were part of the 1820-21 group settlement
of Scottish emigration societies. This group settlement is best described in Carol
Bennett's book, The Lanark Society Settlers.
Hello:
I have William Craig, died 1850 buried in Lanark, ON? Married Christina Swan. So he
seems to be settled around Lanark with a brother, Adam, and have all his children in Canada
by then. Dad told me that William's son Adam from there married a Catholic, Bridget Lee, from
Mount St. Patrick and the kids were that from then and all buried in Springtown cemetery
close by the only Catholic church. The couple went to separate churches. Now there is
St. Patrick's in Calabogie. Sometime we can get to Springtown and sort out some dates.
Ethel's brothers have names like Laurie, Cleveland and fought/ died WWI Ruby was a sister.
There is a memorial in town. Ruby Craig was married a second time to the Calabogie town Doctor,
R. A. Flynn. Adam Craig married to Bridget Lee, I think, was a cook with the Kingston and
Pembroke Railway (K&P, also called the Kick and Push Railroad) when cooks brought food to the
train during stops and fed travelers much better.
Ethel was born near 1891 since she died at 55 in the 1950's.

January 24, 2011:
Hi, I am a descendant of William and Jean. My line is as follows;
John Craig and Jane(Jean)?
William Craig and Jean Russell
John Craig and Janet Gibson
William Craig and Christian Swan
Andrew Craig and Sarah Radwell(Rathwell)
John Craig and Catherine Phillips
John Craig and Eva Belle Dowsett
Evon Craig and Muriel Lumsden
Eric Craig and Joan Fisher
Me
William's wife is often referred to as Christina, but her name as shown on their eldest daughter Janet's baptismal
notice is Christian. Janet was born in Scotland with all the others born in Ontario.
William died in 1870. I have a date of 1837 for Christian but no records other than William listed as a widower in
the 1851 census. I have a list of six children:
Janet(Jessie) Buchanan Craig
John McDonald Craig
William John Craig
George Craig
Adam Craig
Andrew Craig
I have included a few images I have cropped out of original documents I have. The originals are too large to send by email.
I have several anecdotal accounts of William and Christian's arrival in Canada being for 1820 but no documentation.
I do have another account of him arriving in 1821 on the Earl of Buckinghamshire but it is not substantiated either.
The first mention I can find of him in Lanark county is in October 4, 1821 where he received lot 3p of concession 3 in
Lanark township. He was a cooper by trade. Any clarification on this is greatly appreciated.
I am currently looking for information on his son Andrew 1834-1905. He is listed in the 1851 census as married, no other
details. I can't find any marriage or banns announcement, no records of births or baptisms for his children, nothing.
He and his wife Sarah Radwell(Rathwell) had nine children:
William
Christian S.
Andrew
John
Sarah
Janet Margaret
Sinclair James
Jessie B
Adam
I know he left the province and moved to Windermere, British Columbia / BC where he died on Oct 16, 1905. By the 1881 census he is
listed as a widower but no records of children? I did find a mention of Sinclair and Jessie Craig 13 and 11 at the time but the entry
is isolated from any other Craigs. Any information or better yet pictures of Andrew would be greatly appreciated.
Finally, here is a link to my blog. I have picture pages for my family and on my Grandfather Evon's page pictures of his parents
and grandparents:
