Simon and Jane EBBS
County Wicklow, Ireland to Ottawa, Canada

New May 19, 2008:

Here is another family who came to the Ottawa area with the Fitzwilliam assisted emigration
scheme. This Ebbs family are probably related to the Ebbs family, after whom Ebbs Bay
on Mississippi Lake near Carleton Place, Lanark County, was named.

Hi Al,

I have an interesting one here, and a replacement line for what we have in our chart
on B or B (more of the family found):

EBBS, Simon and Jane; John, Ellen and Thomas
from Knocknaboley, County Wicklow to Quebec City and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

With the Drouin records from ancestry.ca I've now been able to track this family pretty
well since their arrival:

1855
Burial of Simon Ebbs in the Catholic cemetery in Quebec City

1861
Burial of Jane Ebbs in the Anglican cemetery in Quebec City

1856
Marriage of John Ebbs to Mary Killin, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Que. City

1864
Marriage of Ellen Ebbs to John Charleson, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Que. City

1869
Burial of John Ebbs in the Anglican cemetery, Que. City

1878
Marriage of Thomas Ebbs to Margaret Major (b. Onslow) in Church of England, Ottawa

1881 Census
Mary Killam / Killeen? Ebbs and her children, all Catholics, living in St. George Ward,
Ottawa. They are listed as born Ontario, but were born in Que. City

1883
Burial of Mary Killan, widow of John Ebbs, St. Patrick's Church, Ottawa

1926
Death of Thomas Ebbs, retired House of Commons messenger, living at 80 Hamilton Ave.

I think that the following Ebbs family from Lanark County is the origin of the name
"Ebbs Bay" on Mississippi Lake. This is a large lake and Ebbs Bay is not far from the
town of Carleton Place. Thanks to Mr. Robert Sample for the following:
