Joseph FORTUNE and Mary STOREY
Original Surveyor of the Village of Richmond, c. 1818
September 1, 2001:
Looking for children and grandchildren of Joseph Fortune (1773-1836)  (Lt.
Col in Prescott County Militia war of 1812). He surveyed the town of
Richmond Ontario and named the original streets in the town circa 1818.  One
street is called Fortune Street.  Joseph's full name is Cornwallis Joseph
Fortune and he was born in South Carolina but is of Northern Irish
protestant extraction..  His wife was Mary Storey (Marie Story 1790-1861).
He lived at Pointe Fortune Ontario (which was named after his father Col.
William Fortune 1748- 1821) for many years in the early 1800's. He raised
all girls, Louisa Eliza b 1808, Marie Charlotte b 1811, Henrietta b 1814,
Susanna b 1819 & m James Porteous 1840, Mary Ann b 1822 plus possibly 2 more
daughters.  All born either at Pointe Fortune Ontario or Ste Andrews East
Quebec.

September 1, 2001 Glen: (if I may) Thanks for the great story of Joseph Fortune and Mary Storey. I've created a new page at www.bytown.net/fortune.htm for them and have added your e-mail address and also links to the Richmond and Goulbourn pages on it. They're also on my main page in the blue table for pioneers in the Nepean / Richmond areas (see link below). In the table, a few rows above Joseph Fortune is a Johanna Fortune, b. 1826, married to Patrick Byrne at Fallowfield. Patrick came from County Wexford and farmed just east of the village of Richmond. I'm not sure if Johanna is one of yours. There were several Byrne families there, most of them Catholic, but one family was Protestant - the family of Richard Byrnes / Burns if memory serves me correctly. Thanks again! ...
