October 21, 2002:
The following map shows many of the important features of Ottawa and Gloucester in 1879:
- Thomas McKay has his mills at Rideau Falls / Green Island. The village of
New Edinburgh is shown on the east side of the Rideau River.
- The Bytown and Prescott Railway runs through Gloucester to the station on
McTaggart Street in Lowertown to the west.
- The village of Janeville, later called Eastview and later still, Vanier.
- The Billings Estate is shown on the south side of the Rideau River at
Bank Street.
- The properties of many of the men who signed the McCabe List in 1829 are shown,
mainly Davey, Stratford, the Collins brothers, Darby and James Kealey, etc.
Researchers can locate the signors of the McCabe List by going to the main
page on this web site and using the Search Engine to find the string ML.
Many of these folks are also located on the west side of the Rideau River, in Nepean
Township. As of September 2002 there are about 80 occurrences.
- There are some lands held by speculators: Charles Rowan who owned Rowan's Hotel
on York Street, John Gourley and Edmund Burritt, UEL.
- Other landowners include Sparks, Heron, Walkley, Upton, Boyd,Hurdman and Yeilding.
- There was a substantial village at Long Island - long since gone.
