John GOOD and Margaret / Margery MAGEE
From Ireland to Marlborough and North Gower Townships, Ontario, Canada
November 11, 2009:
Hello. I have been making very good use of your Bytown or Bust website for the past couple of months and in particular the information
provided by Lee Bartley on families in the Carleton area (the meblee site and files contained on the Alberta Family History
website). What a wonderful resource for genealogical researchers in the Ottawa area.
I am writing to you because I have compiled a lot of information on the Goods and Brownlees, early settlers in Carleton County, using every Internet
source I could access. I did this because I have a brick wall ancestor named William Good, b. 1819 in Ireland (we think Armagh) who was in
Canada by 1846 at least and lived in Huron County until he died in 1894. Not knowing where he came from or who his family was, I reasoned that
he may have had family in Canada and it was most likely in the Carleton area, where the majority of Irish-Canadian Goods lived in the 1852 Census.
I still have not connected my mysterious William Good to anyone in particular but learned a lot about the Carleton Goods and Brownlees in the process.
I was drawn to the Goods of Carleton County because my William had a descendant with a middle name Wellington, something that also pops up in the Good
descendants in Carleton. As well, two of my William’s grandchildren married Brownlees in Huron who later moved to the Algoma region. I thought
somewhere between researching all the Goods and Brownlees in these areas I would find a connection because some Brownlees from Carleton also ended
up in Algoma. Unfortunately, this has not panned out with anything solid but the exercise was worth it to me.
Since I spent a couple of months gathering all this information and now have it organized in a fashion somewhat resembling Lee Bartley’s model, I don’t
want my work to go to waste. I don’t have a website and would like to place the information somewhere where it can help people researching these
family names in the Ottawa region. As near as I can tell there hasn’t been much work done on the early Good settlers of Carleton County, probably
because there hasn’t been much in the way of descendants in the area for over a 100 years.
I have reconstructed the family of John Good, b. 1790 and tried to reconstruct the families of the two William Goods, who along with John are on the
Marlborough Township Assessment lists from 1825 on. I also worked on some other Good families with an early pedigree in the area.
Some people have been doing work on the original Brownlee family who settled in Goulborn around 1820 and later in other townships but I feel
I can provide fuller information about them as a family than any Ancestry tree I have consulted up to this point.
I noticed that your email address is at the bottom of the page in connection with the meblee website. I am not sure who to contact here but thought
I should start with you. Perhaps someone with better access to non-digitized records could build on the material I have gathered, find more detail
and make it as useful as Bartley’s family pages are.
I am wondering what avenue to pursue and what format I should send the material in. I would be happy to forward it to whomever you think might
make most use of it. Sure enjoyed your website which I have been all over several times.

Thanks for your reply Allan.
I am sending you three documents. They are in their original format but if you can’t open them I can change them into PDFs. I thought perhaps
you would like to do this yourself after reformatting them for your purposes. Two of the documents are essentially research summary documents of
Brownlee and Good families and one is a descendant list for John Good and Margery McGee or Magee because I had entered this
particular family into my family tree database and could therefore produce one. This was the family I was focusing on in my research as I
thought they might be the parents of my William Good. I consulted a lot of Internet sources, not all of them detailed in these lists but where
there are exact dates, it is usually because there was a document that gave exact dates – a 1901 Census record or a BDM or cemetery record.
I did consult Ancestry trees but usually tried to recheck anything I found there as most of them, in my experience, don’t list sources and are
therefore kind of shaky. By plugging in the names, anyone with access to Ancestry can find the trees I probably looked at in the course of my search.
There was no tree for John Good’s family and the Brownlee trees usually focused on one or two descendants so weren’t as comprehensive as the one I
constructed. I synthesized material from a variety of sources (several found on or through your website) to draw conclusions and I think this is
evident in the summaries. Of course, I didn’t list all my sources either but I didn’t plan on putting this information in my own family tree until
I found proof of a connection – and I never did.
So, as I mentioned in my earlier email, this is kind of ground work for anyone who wishes to look into these families further and who may have access
to non-digitized sources or local archival material. I do think what I found or reasoned from existing material is worthwhile as a base but any
errors are mine and attributable to no one else.
Please feel free to include my email address: lghenderson@shaw.ca as I am still trying to find a connection in Carleton and would be delighted to hear
from anyone who could make one with my ggg grandfather William Girtwon Good, b. 5 Nov 1819 in Ireland (possibly Armagh), d. 14 Jan 1894 in Colborne,
Huron, Ontario. He was in Canada when he married Sarah Ferriby in 1846 in Perth County. That is all I know about his background before marrying.
I do know that two of his granddaughters with the last name Good married two Brownlee brothers from Huron County who lived in Algoma. These Brownlees
were grandsons of Robert, b. 1799 in Ireland and Ann Brownlee, b. 1810 in Ireland who lived in Peel and Huron Counties and probably arrived in
this area of Ontario between 1828-33 via the USA.
The above explains my initial interest in the Goods and Brownlees of Carleton County and why I found it necessary to research them. Although, I
have to say the project did begin to take on a momentum of its own beyond this. Thank you for providing a receptacle for this work.
... Lisa Henderson.

November 27, 2010:
Thanks to a reader who has provided the following insight about the Good family and also about
the records and processes available at the Land Registry here in Ottawa:
"This may be years too late to be of any good, but here goes.
James Good got a Crown Patent to Lot 7 S½ Conc 4 of North Gower Township on 3 Feb 1871. He and his wife sold the S½ to
Wm J Good on 1 Nov 1875 through Instrument NG802 found in the Land Registry Office in Ottawa. He and his wife sold
N½ of S½ (50 acres) to Wm John Good on 30Jul1881 by Instrument NG1542.
Mary Good got a Crown Patent to Lot 7 N½ of N½ Conc 4 of North Gower Township on 7Jun1866. Thos Good was her executor,
named in Instrument NG2030. It was sold by Thos Good on 11Jan1886 to AHScollon by Instrument NG2077.
In 1837, William Good was assessed for Lot 7 Southside Conc 4, while James Good was assessed for Lot 7 S½ Conc 4.
In 1838 William Good was assessed for the NW Corner of Lot 7 Conc 4. James Kenny was assessed for the SW Corner of Lot 7 Conc 4.
In 1840, William Good was assessed for Lot 7 N pt Conc 4 (50 acres) and James Good for Lot 7 S pt Conc 4 (50 acres).
Do you know what the professions of these two Good gentlemen were?
The Registry Office is in the Court House at Elgin and Laurier Streets. It is open to the public, but searchers for
real estate lawyers are busy there most of the day. Copies are expensive. Some of the early documents are missing,
but 99% (or so) of the abstracts are there.
I just walk in, install myself at a film reader, find my 'cartridge', and copy what I want manually. It is possible
to print from the film, and I have done it. It is a bit of a hassle, but useful by times.
The Assessment Rolls are perhaps even more useful than land records for some purposes. They are available for
the Johnstown District and North Gower Township by interlibrary loan from Ontario Archives.
