John HICKEY
Low, Quebec and Corkery, Ontario
March 1, 2004:
Hello,
Would you have any history on the Hickey family of Martindale / Low, Quebec?
I'm trying to find anything on my ancestry but I don't have much to go on.
My grandfather, Anthony James Hickey was born in Martindale November 5, 1906.
He is buried at St. Michael's in Corkery, ON. He was married to Noreen Meehan.
They lived in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, PQ.
His father was John Hickey and had a sister by the name of Mary Augusta.
I don't have much information, except I know that my grandfather had one sister
by the name of Loretta and another by the name of Florence. I know he had
other siblings but I don't know any of their names.
Sorry I'm not much help, but that's all I have.
Thank you for any help you can offer me.
Lisa Beauchamp

September 26, 2005:
Hi Lise,
I had the pleasure of chatting with your mother and Aunt a few weeks ago.
I had invited them to the Skillen family re-union at Farrellton at the end of July, 2005.
My great aunt Letitia Mary Ann Skillen (b. Oct. 3, 1878, daughter of John Skilllen and
Anne O’Rourke of Lowe Township) married John Thomas Hickey. John T’s parents were William
Hickey and Ellen Mahoney. They had at least four children other than your great grandfather.
John Thomas and Letitia Mary Anne (the Skillens always called her Letitia, she seems to
have preferred Mary, so I am told by the Hickeys who knew her.) had twelve children.
My father, born 1908 was a close cousin to your grandfather. They both went up to
Sudbury as young men to work in the nickel mines. Your grandfather left and bought the
Canadian Tire franchise in Valleyfield, Quebec. Your grandmother Noreen Meehan Hickey
was my mother’s maid of honour at my parents’ wedding in Garson, Ontario in 1939.
I remember visiting your grandparents in Valleyfield when I was a youngster. Your
grandfather’s brother Martin had a farm on the east side of the Gatineau River. He married
Frances Kelly and had twelve children. I believe your mother’s cousin of Ottawa has
the Hickey family tree.
Good luck in your search,
Terry Skillen
