James HOGAN and Ann CONNERS, from County Wicklow, Ireland
to the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada area in the 1840's (Kitley and Marlborough Townships)

December 17, 2009:

Hi Al,

Yesterday I tried to follow another of the Wicklow emigrés from Annette's list at http://www.bytown.net/coolattin.htm

There's a James Hogan, who appears on the list just below Samuel Harnett:

January 27, 1842
Cash paid James Hoyan / Hogan (sp?) of Urelands [now called Newry], wife and 7 children=10 pounds, 6 shillings and 3 pence

Samuel Harnett, who settled in Kitley for a time and later in Marlborough, was listed with his wife [Frances Conners] and child;
and next are Mary Jane and Elizabeth Conners (who we now know were Samuel's mother-in-law and sister-in-law).

I believe that the attached 1851 census page shows James Hogan of Annette's list also settling in Kitley. His wife appears to have
died, and there are 6 children born in Ireland (one may have died, or may have married and elected to stay in Wicklow).

From records of James Hogan's children's marriages in Canada, I learned that his wife was Ann CONNERS, and thought that perhaps his
wife and Samuel Harnett's wife were related, and so I was pleased to find James Hogan's sons, James and Nicholas, listed next to
Samuel Harnett's family in Marlborough in 1871.

The Hogans were Church of Ireland / England, so I don't have any Wicklow church records to prove this case, but I do believe we've
found another Wicklow family locally.

New September 30, 2010: Hello Fellow Genealogists Sure do enjoy your information on the Harnett / Hogan families. Being a descendant of Samuel I am extremely greatful for the information which you were able to dig up regarding the Hogan family that I had no idea was a relation. I noticed that on the 1861 census James and Nicholas were listed as part of household number 27 on page 5, Div 1 and the Harnett's were number 27 on page 4, Div 1, so it appears to me that they were living with the Harnett's at that time. You mentioned that you found information on Hogan marriage certificates, to date I have only been able to find James' marriage registration and none of the others, maybe you could give me direction in this regard. Also on the 1851 census the two names following the Hogan family I believe are also relatives, that being John and Jane McCartney as I believe Jane to be Ann's sister and their marriage took place 1847 in Kitley (MF# C-3031), her maiden being "Connor", maybe just a coincidence. Thanks for all your help, Patrick Harnett ____________________________________ Hi Al & Anne, Thank you for your quick response Yes you may add my email address to the Hogan page although I really do not have a lot of information on them as yet but always glad to help out with whatever I can. I don't really know for sure whether they in fact are relatives, my suspicions are base on the research which has been done by Anne Burgess but in looking through census and so on I see that there are many Connors. The fact that two of James' sons (James and Nicholas) appear to by residing with the Harnett's in the 1861 census leads me to think that there could be a connection. I haven't found any Harnett's in Marlborough other than my own family of which Ellen is not a relation to my knowledge but I believe that there was a Hornet family living in Goulbourn who were farming 37 to 47 acres in Marlborough between 1873 and 1885 according to the Marlborough land assessments. Elllen in this case is the daughter of Phillip and Mary who also had other children. I've included a partial family picture which I received some years ago from a distant relative who lives in Ontario, she used to live in Nepean but has moved closer to Toronto recently. My great grandfather, Samuel who came to Canada in 1841(I believe) along with his wife and first born daughter, Mary Ann, is in the centre along with several of his children born in Canada and their spouses. I'm guessing at the date but think that it may have been around 1892. My grandmother, Mary (in the front row) and my grandfather, Samuel (front right) are two of the people in this picture. ...
