Johnathon JACKSON and Mary SHORE JACKSON
also the SANDERSON surname

Hi Al,

I believe my Jackson family came to Canada from Kilkenny, Ireland in the
1840's. They were Johnathon Jackson (b.1813) and Mary Shore Jackson (b.
1811). Daughter, Frances, was born in Kilkenny in 1840. Son, Samuel, was
born in Bytown (I think) in 1843. Thomas Jackson (GGgrandfather) was born in
Ottawa in 1850-1. They were Protestant.

Do you know how I can find any other information about them? Thank you.

Kindest Regards,
Patsy Leigh Reitz

February 6, 2002 Here's an excerpt from Lillie's Story. The complete story is at Daphne Wilson's Web Site "My father was born in Bytown. (which is Ottawa now.) His father owned the farm Ottawa is on, at that time and the house my father was born in was almost where the Parliament buildings stand today. After he sold out he moved to Welland, where he worked on the canal and for the railroad and in the brick factory. He was always bald headed and when we asked him how it happened, he said, in the brick factory, they always had to wear a cap, and it was so hot on their heads, they were all ball headed, lost all their hair. My mother was born in Galashields, Scotland. Her people the Sandersons owned the Sanderson cotton mills. They are still called that name. Sam Jackson, my father and Elizabeth Sanderson were married in 1869. They lived in Welland, and Merritton, and had 7 children before leaving for the North West. The first 3, two boys and a girl died, very young, but the other 2 were healthy, and they came with them."

He married ELIZABETH "BETSY" SANDERSON March 21, 1866 in Niagara City, New York, USA, daughter of JOHN SANDERSON and JANET HISLOP. Notes for SAMUEL JAMES (SR) JACKSON: "Gowanbrae" published 1974 "Samuel James Jackson" Samuel James Jackson was born in Ottawa, On, CAN, and he married a Scots lass, Elizabeth (Betsy) Sanderson. Thomas Sanderson, Betsy's brother, had been out west in 1875 and was so delighted with the country that he went back east and persuaded Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and several bachelors to move west. In the spring of 1878, the Sam Jackson family came to the North West Territories, arriving early enough to plant potatoes they bought at Fort a la Corne. Mr Jackson filed on a homestead south of Kinistino, the S.W. quarter of 16-45-21, which he later sold to Mr. Baird. He filed on a second homestead in 1883 west of Kinistino, the NW quarter of 22-45-22, where Tom Cleghorn lives now. They built their first log house on this homestead, later building a larger one that stood for many years after they were gone. Mr and Mrs. Jackson and their family of three sons and two daughters were the first settlers in this area, and their daughter Alice was the first white child born in this vicinity. When the goverment started surveying and building roads, Mr Jackson worked as foreman for the bridge building crews. Mrs. Jackson was a true pioneer neighbor and answered any call for help, day or night, to nurse the sick or deliver an expectant mother. The Jacksons raised a large family of six sons and five daughters, Sam Jr, Fred, Jack, Frank, Edward (Ned), Harry, Mary, Elizabeth, Alice, Lilly and Grace. Mrs. Jackson passed away May 8th, 1923 and Mr Jackson died in 1931. Publisher: National Archives of Canada Publication place: Ottawa Volume/Page(s): C8,p.6 From Trellis This was a quote fom the book I was telling you about. It's called "Bygones of Brancepeth" . It was put together by the students in the 1954-55 year. They put xxxx together a booklet the history of the community. The Dept. of Education planned this under the direction of two teachers, one from the senior school and one from the junior school. I'll relay what this book says...Jonathan Jackson........" Given by George Young. Two more pioneers of the early days, two that helped blaze the first trail through hundreds of miles of bleak wilderness, inhabited in those days by nothing but wild animals and Indians, have passed on, They are Jonathon and Bidney Jackson, better known to all as "Johnny" and "Aunt Bidney". Their leaving was very much the same as their coming. They travelled together--Aunt Bidney departed exactly four weeks before Johnny. While they are gone fron our midst it will be many a long year before they will be forgotten. During their 55 years of continual residence here in this little community many a great changes took place, nevertheless. Their never failing ways of making welcome never failed to win and make the warmest of everlasting friends. This went a long way sometimes in the early days when the Indians were none too friendly, and this in itself goes a long way to explain why the old pioneer is such a friendly nature. It might easily be said that many a weary traveller found a home of rest and shelter at the Jackson home and many a time the cattle were turned out to make room for a third team of oxen or horses. A few things that Aunt Bidney could do in the early days were: make a light, when the coal oil ran down, with a saucer, some rag twisted into a cord and skunk oil or bear grease; make a bannock, or bread out of some boiled potatoes with a little flour mixed in; burn some crusts to take the place of tea and many other such makeshifts. Lifewise 50 years ago Johnny could make harness out of raw hide; make a harness h??e out of grey willow or small birch; make an ox or horse collar with a grain bag and hay; make a pipe from an empty thread spool and a piece of willow and dozens of other makeshifts. That was when stores were miles and miles away. Many a harrowing tale they could tell of how they used their wits when strange Indians were around. And well did both Aunt Bidney and Johnny know that some of the red men were none too safe in those days. Once their metal was well tested when a tribe of Indians appeared and wanted to buy the oldest child. This, of course, would be to trade a horse for the little one. In this case they had to use all their Irish wit which in the end did not fail them.A deal was made but they were cute enough to show the Indians to his satisfaction that some time would have to lapse before the bargain could be closed out. For a great many years when they were in their prime they could take a hand at anything, at a picnic, ballgame or dance. Many a good old Irish jig did Aunt Bidney and Bob Shore step off, which they could do to perfection--like get Johnny to umpire a baseball game and he was in his glory. And don't ever think he would run if a dispute struck up. He would surely stand his ground and always stood for nothing but a square deal. Nothing could beat them at a sick bed and in the eary days they went miles and spent many a long dreary night watching over the sick, and as years rolled by Aunt Bidney earned for herself a name of praise as a nurse of those days. Finally Aunt Bidney's health began to fail and gradually it undermined her steel bound grit and courage. Right up to within a few days of her end her motherly ways never changed. To call at Aunt Bidney's home meant a cup of tea and this never failed, In Johnny's case he never was known to be sick but old age kept sapping his once manly body. When Aunt Bidney departed Johnny said there was nothing left to live for since the old woman was gone and despite the very best of care and medical attention, he too peacefully fell asleep to wake no more, as did Aunt Bidney at the little old farmhouse just south of Brancepeth. Johnny was born at Merriton, Ontario, on February 26,1853. Aunt Bidney was born at the same place on June 21,1856. Johnny joined the Orange lodge in 1873. They married on March, 1877. They came west to Prince Albert in 1882 and moved to Kinistino the same fall. In 1883 they took up homestead in this community where they lived up to their time of passing. Aunt Bidney was back east once in 1914, but Johnny never went back. They left to mourn their loss six sons, Willie of Los Angeles; James of Cold Lake,Alberta; Giblon of Battleford; Moore of Richmond, California; Mike, Joe, Etta and Maggie of this place. Despite the awfull bad roads a great many old aquaintances, friends and relatives were present to pay their last respects. The Pallbearers were the same for both as follows: George and Bill Shore; Jack, Sam, Frank and Ned Jackson, nephews of the deceased. Their caskets were covered with beautiful wreaths and sprays which told only too well of the high esteem in which they were held. Their two favorite hyms were sung;" Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and " Abide with Me". Rev. Normand Calland of Birch Hills and the Anglican preacher of Kinistino took the services. They will never be forgotten. George Young, a neighbor of 55 years. They lived south of Kinistino during the Riel Rebellion but later moved to NW 22-45-22 before the Gowanbrae School District was formed. Sam took most of his schooling in the old Orange Hall west of Kinistino. He homesteaded the NW quarter of 16-45-22 in 1890's and when he married Agnes Anne Graham of Minto Manitoba in 1902 he brought his new bride to this farm. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson had a family of eleven children. Six boys, Kenneth the eldest died in 1949. Jack married Mabel Lowrie, and they live in Kinistino(1974). Graham married Ethel Anderson( Serena's note: I grew up knowing Graham and Ethel as Aunt and Uncle. The lived just a few blocks from us in Prince Albert, Sk about 1954.) and they make their home in Prince Albert. Harold married Erma Hadland, they live on the home farm in Gowanbrae. Keith married Lynda Wild, they too live in the Gowanbrae district. Walter married Mary Wispelwey of Holland, they make their home in the Norden district. Their five daughters are Elsie, Mrs H Anderson of Haney, BC; Jane, Mrs Norman Jones of the Derby district (Serena's note: I remember going to visit at the Jones farm about 1955); Bess, Mrs Reg Wild of Moose Jaw; the twins, Hester, Mrs Harold Hanson of Weldon and Hattie, Mrs Dan Calvin or Vernon, BC. Mrs Jackson was called upon many times to help a new baby intot his world, and help others in times of sorrow. Aunt Agnes and Uncle Sam, as they were known to friends and relatives alike (Serena's note: I remember this couple as well, and they were very old when I knew them.); had remarkable memories, and Sam could sing old songs by the hour, and both would entertain their family by reciting poems they had learned as children. During their years together they had two homes destroyed by fire, but their health was exceptionally good and they never lost faith that the Lord would provide. Sam had a great love of horses, and took much pride in his different teams. When Ken and Elsie were just little tykes, Sam and Agnes drove to Minto, Manitoba with a team of horses and wagon in the fall of the year, spent the winter with the Grahams, and drove home again in the spring. Mr and Mrs Jackson lived in this district for 60 years, then retired to Kinistino. Mrs Jackson passed away at the age of 90 years in February of 1972 and Mr Jackson died eight months later in October of 1972, at the ripe old age of 97. December 29, 2005: I am trying to locate information about Robert Jackson who was born 1821 and emigrated from Ireland to Canada. He married Ann Gardiner (Gardner) in Goulbourn about 1842. They subsequently lived in McNab Township and Fitzroy. Do you know if Jonathon Jackson had a relative (brother, uncle, cousin) named Robert? Any info much appreciated. ... Jack Carter ____________________ Hi Al Thanks for your reply to my query. I will be grateful if you add my name and e-mail address to your website. Robert Jackson is my g.g.grandfather and any info I can exchange will be wonderful. Thanks and Happy New Year Jack Carter
April 29, 2010: Hi my name is Barbara Anne Hamilton Brandon, Mary Jane and William McGowan were my Great Grandparents I believe. Could you be of any help to me? I look forward to hearing from you Thanks Barb
March 9, 2012: Hello Everyone, and hopefully fellow cousins. My great grandfather THOMAS HISLOP born in Galashiels, Rox, Scotland .. is the only brother of JANNET HISLOP SANDERSON. I believe "you all" descend from her eldest daughter Elizabeth Betsy Sanderson who married Samuel Jackson. Jannet Hislop's mother's name was Elizabeth "Betsy" (Watson) Hislop. Jannet's name is spelled with two n's on her gravestone, and my mother's name was supposed to be with two n's as well. I live about 25 miles from Wroxeter Ontario where Jannet Sanderson died in 1870, and she is buried in a single grave in the Wroxeter Cemetery. (photo below). Jannet Sanderson Hislop grave marker I have lots of info on the rest of the HISLOP family, two more sisters and their families as they lived in Huron County, Ontario, plus my family that descends from Thomas Hislop who lived in Grey County, Owen Sound area. My mother is Janet Elizabeth Hyslop (there is a reason for the change in spelling, a confusing and as yet unproven family legend). Feel free to contact me at this email address, as I am really interested in faamily history, and would like to learn more about the Hislop Sanderson and Ballantyne family of weavers from Galashiels who came to Huron County and practiced their craft. Kindest regards, gary moon
