Mitchell:
Hello there, I just want to say thank you so much! I've finally made a hit with the Burke
family. I am one of the granddaughters of T.V.(Thomas Vincent) Burke who is the son of Daniel
Patrick Burke and Emily Kealey. You've done so much research and I actually benefit by filling
in the blanks of about 3 generations on my grandfather's maternal side of the family. Just to
let you know (if I'm on the right track) the other son's name was Frank James who married Alice
Donovan (is that where you got the Lanahan). Frank was born Nov.25,1891 died Oct.11,1918
serving in WW1. He is buried in France. This info is from the National Archives War Memorial
website. As far as I know from his attestation papers he was a newspaper editor (don't know
which paper). His nephew (T.V.'s son) Tim Burke became a well know sports writer here in
Montreal.Tim's son Daniel also became a journalist. T.V. Burke was a chartered accountant and
was a senior VP with Price Waterhouse in Montreal when he died. His date of birth was July 18,
1901. He married Helen Genevieve Smith (I don't have the date). He died Aug.17,1962.
I know I'm rambling on and this probably isn't your direct line but I thought you may like the
info to fill in your tree some more. It's the least I can do since I've obtained so much info
from your research. Right now I'm a lazy genealogist(the internet is my main tool and some info
from a few family members) but now I'm filling in so many blanks I really should start to
document everything.
Anyway, thank you again and if you happen to have more info on Daniel Patrick Burke or any of
the Burke's in Ottawa I would love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Catherine Burke De Santis
PS. How is Catherine Kealey m.to Hugh Byers related to James Kealey who m. their daughter
Emily Byers?

Catherine, thanks for your message. I'm happy that some of my information was able to fill-in
some "blanks" for you. although I don't have any more information on the Burke line - this
was included because of the marriage to the Kealey which is my family line. A couple of
quick comments:
With Emily Kealey being my great grandmother's sister, this would make us 3rd cousins!
I don't have any additional information on Daniel Burke, but it shouldn't be too difficult
to find something. My great grandmother (Emily's sister) was married at St Patrick's in
Ottawa therefore there's a good chance that Emily was also married at this location
(or possibly Notre Dame or St. Mary's (Our Lady of Good Counsel) since these were all
churches attended by the Kealeys. If you go to the local Family History Centre, they
have microfilms of all the local church records and you should be able to find the marriage
record for Emily and Daniel, which should show Daniel's birth place and parent's names.
From there you could possibly work backwards for other generations.
If you know approximately when Daniel died, the Family History Centre also carries death
certificates for certain years and the parents are identified for many of those years.
All-in-all, it shouldn't be too difficult to find additional information on the Burkes
from the microfilms at the family history centre (although it will probably take a few
days of research)
Re. your question about Catherine Kealey married to Hugh Byers, I wish I knew! I've seen
her name in records both as Kelley and Kealey, although more often as Kealey. I have no
information about her background and if there is any relationship to her son-in-law James.
All for now.

July 17, 2003:
Hi Mitchell,
I have a Ellen Kealey married to a Thomas McBride. Ellen Kealey died March 25, 1919
aged 39 years. She is buried at Our Lady of Visitation, Gloucester, Ontario. Would this be
one of your Kealey's? I am looking for McBride descendants. If you are interested I have a
picture of the stone as well as the inscription.
Thanks
Anne-Marie

Hello Anne-Marie,
I reviewed my Kealey records and have a few Ellens, but none born in 1880. The closest
I have is Ellen Kealey born in 1876 to James Kealey and Ellen Byers (who were my
great-great-grandparents. My Kealey clan has tended to be buried at Note Dame therefore
I'm not sure if this is a match. Do you know the names of the parents from the burial
record at the church?

Hi,
Most of my McBride's were buried at Notre Dame also, I was surprised to find this group
of McBride's at Our Lady.
I do know that Thomas McBride's parents were James McBride and Annie Stratford
(also buried at Our Lady) and I have contacted the church to get more info. James McBride's
father was Miles McBride who was my great, great grandfather and is buried at Notre Dame.
Miles' first wife died in Black Rapids and Miles is listed as living in Nepean.
I am attaching the a picture of the Tombstone's for both Thomas and Ellen McBride at Our
Lady of Visitation in Gloucester.
Thanks again,
Anne-Marie

Could this James Kealey be the James that married Eleanor Brennen about 1827..
In LDS Records he is noted as James Coyley (married to Helen Brennan) born about
1803 in Ottawa. Their daughter Mary is listed as Mary Coyley. Could he have been
Darby's brother although they state he was born in Ottawa District as was his wife.
I know Mary Kealey that married Michael Gleason always went by the name Kealey.
They were my GG grgandparents.
... Barbara Hawes
(from your page):
" Darby Kealey.
He may have been a brother to James Kealey
both James and Darby came from Queen's County originally.
Queen's County is now called Laois and is in central Ireland. It's interesting
that Darby sailed from Sligo.
Darby's name is recorded at various times in the records of Notre Dame Basilica
in downtown Ottawa. He was a contemporary of some of my ancestors and he may be
buried in Notre Dame Cemetery. I'll keep an eye out for him. Maybe we'll discover
the name of his first wife."

Thanks to Mitchell Lafrance for the following reply to Barbara:
Hello Barbara,
There was no relation or it was from several generations earlier through Darby Kealey.
It is his descendants that went to Low, Quebec.
There were 3 early Kealy settlers (Darby (aka Jeremiah), Martin and James), but I
don't think anyone has ever figured out if and/or how they were related. There is
speculation of them being cousins, but nothing definite.
My information shows a Mary Kealey married to a Michael Gleason, but Mary was the
daughter of Darby Kealey and his second wife Elizabeth Mulligan.

Hi Barbara
Sorry for the delay, but I think Al may have directed you by misreading Kealey
for Kennedy, which I have a lot of, but never the less, I do have something for you
and you will have to decide what's associated and what's not. Please see the
following. James may have remarried because Eleanor died young.
Take care
