Jeremiah KYLE and Isabella TURNER
County Tyrone, Ireland, to Fitzroy Township, Ontario, Canada, c. 1840

May 9, 2010:

Thanks to Mr. Allan P. Gray from Texas, USA, for the following Kyle Family history and some wonderful photographs!

On the back of this photo is written "Old House at Kinburn, Ont. Now Torn Down, May 1939, William Kyle on the left." William Kyle, Fitzroy Township, Ontario, Canada
Thanks for your nice project re Fitzroy Harbour. On your first map you have Jeremiah Kyle along the lower left border. He was my Great Grandfather, son of William Kyle who moved into the area circa 1840 (I have his Fenian Raid Medals -- see below).
Part of Belden's 1879 Fitzroy Map
Jeremiah and family left about 1904 having lost their land to a Cavanagh and homesteaded in Western Saskatchewan where he became Post Master for the town of Kyleville later Kyle, Saskatchewan, named after him. My mother grew up in that homestead 1911 - 1928 but then moved to Winnipeg where I was born. I worked at Deep River as a Chemist but stupidly never went around to see the Fitzroy Harbour area. William Kyle and wife Isabella are buried at St. Paul's church (I think it is) but no one has gone around to look for a tombstone either. They came from County Tyrone but Irish records are scarce and I know little about their origins other than that. Don't even know Isabella's maiden name. She was nearly 10 years older than he - she was born about 1802 according to census records. I have found and scanned the photo showing my Grandfather, William Kyle, son of Jeremiah Kyle and Grandson of William Kyle, the original immigrant from Tyrone county. On the back it says ... "Old House at Kinburn, Ont. Now Torn Down, May 1939, Wm. Kyle on the left." Now this is certainly not the house of Jeremiah Kyle at the time of the Belden Map (1879) as he is up just a bit north of Galetta. The smallish site (1/4 the usual size) labelled Wm Kyle on the Belden Map is a bit closer but still north of Kilburn quite a bit. I do not know who did the writing on the picture and I do remember various places being mentioned or written about within the family - even Arnprior was commonly mentioned and that is still further away. But perhaps my Grandfather lived there during his sojourns back East or something. Note that the little Wm Kyle property is across from the Turner and Cavanagh and Lillie families. These are the names commonly connected with the Kyles. Willie Kyle went threshing with both Cavanaghs and Lillies in the west. I think that the photo must be the original dwelling of the Kyles at the Wm. Kyle site on the map. Otherwise why go to the trouble of taking the picture? Jeremiah Kyle's sister, Matilda, who was born in Ireland circa 1832, Jeremiah being the first born in Canada of William and Isabella Kyle circa 1841, married a Robert Douglas and went off to San Juan Island in 1870 where they became very early and very prominent pioneers of that locale. I have a good deal of information about their descendants and I actually visited some of them myself way back in the 1940's with me Mum and Dad Maybe somebody around remembers this house and where it was. If anything comes up about these Kyles I would be really pleased to hear about it. Allan P Gray
May 10, 2010: Hello Allan and Allan Lewis (Sens fan extinct, he he) Isabella's maiden name was Turner. Jeremiah Kyle married Mary (Annie) Turner September 21, 1885 and were Episcopalian / Anglican. He was the son of William Kyle and Isabella TURNER. Jeremiah's wife Annie Turner was the daughter of George Turner and Jane Timmins. Their son William Kyle was born in July 5, 1884, 2 months before they married. Isabella Jane born 26 Aug 1885, Allan Forest 24 Jun 1887, Harold Gladwin 10 Nov 1892, George 27 Jun 1891 and Walter 26 Jan 1895. William Kyle Sr. born circa 1812 and died May 23, 1897 aged 85 years and Isabella died April 10, 1876 aged 75 years and born circa 1801. Attached are their tombstone pictures. I absolutely love those medal pictures. Thank you for sharing. Taylor Kennedy PS They lived on Lot 18 in the 7th concession of Fitzroy Township. Taylor ____________________________ Well thank you for all that Taylor. In all these years nobody has ever gone around and found those tombstones. I even corresponded for a time with a Mr. Cavanagh I think it was. Now I am stunned to learn that Isabella, the original immigrant was a Turner - Lord knows we have enough Turners connected to the family already. I have a box full of Turner photographs. Does that mean that Jeremiah Kyle married his first cousin? Can you give me the source or record for that info - its so earthshaking I need some reinforcement. Are you in any way connected with this lot ? - if so I have a good deal of peripheral information. You seem to have those birth dates ready at hand. My mother made some notes of deaths on an index card which I confirmed over the years. Isabella Jane known to all as "Dolly" died unexpectedly and suddenly Jan 27 1904 after a snowshoe trip across the ice to her Grandmother's place in Quebec. Allan Forest Kyle never married and died July 20 1932 in Saskatoon; Walter Kyle never married and died Dec 19 1946 in Elrose Saskatchewan (near Kyle) George Kyle never married and died Dec 25 1949 in Elrose. William Kyle did marry, Gertrude Katrina Johansson from Sweden but she died young in Winnipeg 1914 after having three daughters, Marion Isabella Kyle, Alice Gertrude Kyle and Florence Edith Kyle. She was born March 1 1911 in Winnipeg and died April 23, 2001 in Phoenix Arizona, USA. Jeremiah Kyle died Oct 20, 1918 in Kyle Saskatchewan and Mary Ann Turner Kyle died Dec.25 1923.also in Kyle. I note December 25 occurs a bit in these records. I was born on December 25 so it all fits! Also note that Marion Isabella Kyle married a Plewis and her children have or had that surname. Not so far from Lewis is it? And he is Allan Lewis so round and round we go. Thanks again and we ought to keep in touch. ... May 11, 2010: It is interesting that the country folks, scarcely educated and newly arrived in the wilds of Canada conducted themselves in their daily affairs with all the formalities we would expect of the upper class. The attached hand written invitation to an assembly at the Fitzroy School has all the style of a request to attend an Assembly at Buckingham Palace. "Mr. W. and Miss D. Kyle" have "the pleasure of their company" requested to show up at the School Hall at 'Eight O'Clock" Jan 8th 1904. This is William Kyle, my Grandfather born July 5, 1884 and Isabella Jane Kyle, his only sister born Aug 26 1885. They are therefore in their late teens. Isabella was never known by that name but was called "Dollie" - hence "D. Kyle" in the invitation. Sadly, as noted on the invitation by my Mother, Florence Edith Gray nee Kyle, Dollie died that same month, January 27. She had not been feeling well but nevertheless snowshoed across the frozen Ottawa with her Turner Uncle to visit her Turner Grandmother at North Onslow, Quebec. While there she died suddenly in the afternoon. Those snowshoes are still in the family - now in the possession of my first cousin, Glenn Plewis of Fanny Bay, Vancouver Island. It should be noted that there are no descendants of those Kyles of Fitzroy County who now bear the surname of Kyle, The Turners were numerous and some departed for Saskatchewan, Northern New York State and Washington State. They exchanged numerous letters and photographs with Mary Ann Kyle nee Turner, wife of Jeremiah Kyle, for many years. I have lots of those - many of the people in the pictures are not identified other than as relatives of Mary Ann. There are very likely many Turner descendants bearing that name around today. On the picture of the Kinburn house sent earlier it occurs to me that this might be the house of Samuel Jeffrey and Mary Kyle which was a good deal closer to Kinburn than any of the other Kyle connected properties on the Belden Map. In the Map book William Kyles place is said to be at Mohrs Corners - other properties are said to be at Kinburn so there was a distinction ... Allan Gray

May 13, 2010: Here is a picture of Belle Jeffrey (attached). It says on the back written in the hand of William Kyle my Grandfather "Bella Jeffrey 588 Lisgar St. Ottawa, Works at General Supply Co. Ottawa" and then my mother has written "William Kyle First Cousin". Allan Gray

New May 15, 2010: I attach a photo of William Kyle, son of Jeremiah Kyle and grandson of William Kyle all of Fitzroy Township at one time or another. He is with his three daughters and the picture is probably taken in 1914 the year their mother died in Winnipeg. I believe they are the last to bear the name of Kyle descended from those pioneers. The girls were all born in Winnipeg but were taken about the time of this picture to their grandparents, Jeremiah Kyle and Mary Ann Turner to be raised by them on their homestead in Kyleville (later Kyle), Saskatchewan). They are Florence Edith Kyle( my mother) on her father's knee, Marion Isabella Kyle with the book and Alice Gertrude Kyle standing. I came across another photo obviously taken the same day and with at least two of the same characters in the picture of the boarded up house (above) with William Kyle and friend standing in front. This one has the same two in the same outfits plus two other unknown local old timers and so it might help to identify the place and the people. Time of photo like the other is likely 1939. Allan Gray _____________________________________________ These photographs are works of art. Thanks for them, I'll post them later today. Notice in the picture of the four men, it is written on the barn door "Jery Kyle, Galetta, Ontario". Galetta is on the road between Fitzroy Harbour and Arnprior, where the Mississippi River (our version) empties into the Ottawa River. Thanks again, ...
