The LDS records (Latter Day Saints) are the most comprehensive genealogy records available. Their Head Office is in Utah and they have gathered information, mostly available on Microfilm Reels, which can be borrowed through your local library. You can also search their records on the Internet. In Ottawa, there is a "Family History Center" (LDS branch) on Prince of Wales Drive. They have many microfilm readers, photocopiers, and microfilm reels pertaining to the Ottawa / Carleton area. Click on the link below to get reel numbers, etc. for this area.
January 3, 2002: Here's a good description of the early LDS records from Notre Dame Cathedral in Ottawa. Thanks to Theresa Liewer for this: Al - Sorry to be slow about getting the film number to you. The original registers of the Cathedral of Notre Dame contain baptisms, marriages and burials interspersed in chronological order. The handwriting is often difficult to read. Baptisms, marriages and burials, 1825, 1829-1847 are on LDS microfilm #1301761. Baptisms, marriages and burials 1848-1855 are on LDS film #1301762. The records continue on various films through 1917. At some point, someone transcribed the records into separate registers, one each for baptisms, marriages and burials. These also have been filmed. The handwriting is much easier to read. However, there may be information in the original registers that is not on these transcriptions, so researchers should be sure to check the film of the original register as well. For instance, for a a period of about a year starting in Nov 1832, the priest recorded the parish and county of birth in Ireland for the bride and groom. This is in the original register, but not in the index. They are not an alphabetical index - the records appear in chronological order. The film numbers for these are: Chron. Index to Baptisms, 1829-1852 film # 1301756, Chron Index to Funerals 1829-1910 #1301760, Chron Index to Marriages 1829-1867 #1301758 (the marriages come after Baptisms 1894-1910 at the beginning of the roll of film).January 4, 2002 Conversion List of the Archives of Ontario's and the Genealogical Society of Utah's Microfilm References
