August 25, 2009:
Hello All:
We have been researching an ancestor, Thomas Letts / Lett who emigrated from
Ireland (we think) in the 19th century to Calumet Island and later to
Renfrew County or Hastings County in Ontario. He appears on your list of landowners
in 1867. Thanks for the list.
We are wondering if you have any further information regarding Thomas Letts.
My son and I plan to visit Calumet Island on August 27 or 28th and wonder if
you could advise as to where we might look for information, such as
municipal record offices, churches, etc Thank you in advance for any
information that you may have. My address is P.O.Box 110, 49 The Promenade,
Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, L0S 1J0, e-mail as below.
Regards,
Arn. Westlake

Lett was not a common surname in this area in the 1800's, although there was
a newspaper publisher in Ottawa whose name was William Pittman Lett. He wrote
one of the best histories of early Ottawa. It's called Recollections of Old
Bytown, published by the Historical Society of Ottawa in 1979. He was the first
City Clerk in Ottawa. There is a photo of him in his book.
