History and Genealogy
including Archibald McMILLAN

May 5, 2005:
About 1820, a Scotsman named McMillan, living in Montreal, acquired a large grant of land just east
of the Buckingham area. He returned to Scotland and chartered a
ship to bring settlers to his new land. His name was Archibald McMillan of Murlaggan and
he's mentioned in the book The Upper Ottawa Valley to 1855, edited by Richard Reid
and his migration scheme is described in the book People of Glengarry, by Marianne McLean.
Also, see an excerpt from Marianne McLean's book, below, posted on April 8, 2011:
More than in any other part of Ontario or Quebec, the Ottawa Valley was settled
by organized group settlement (for example, Glengarry, Lanark, Goulbourn and the
Peter Robinson settlers). The Lochaber settlers had many connections to the
Glengarry (Upper Canada) Scots and McMillan had a tough
time to get his people to Lochaber - many of them already had relatives across the
Ottawa River in Glengarry. Finally he persuaded many to join him in Lochaber.
In 1802, a group of settlers had come from Lochaber (Scotland) to Glengarry in Upper
Canada. (see The Lochaber Emigrants to Glengarry).
Here's one family who came in 1822: (Thanks to Lloyd Miller)
James C. McFarlane
Hi,
My grandmother Hannah McFarlane was born in Lochaber Quebec 21 July 1865. She married
Thomas Orr in Ottawa Dec 23 1892. (The Orr family were from Argenteuil County).
I found all the James C. McFarlane children in the St. Stephens Church Baptism
records in Buckingham starting with the birth of William Thomas in 1850 in Lochaber.
They had a farm in Lochaber. I haven't found the marriage information re James C.
McFarlane who was born at sea in 1822 and Hannah Tompkins, probably around 1849
or so.
I visited the St Stephens church in Buckingham a few years ago and found some
headstones , broken, but still there, for McFarlanes and Tompkins. I tried to find
the farm in Lochaber but ...failed.. I just stumbled on your Buckingham www and
thought you might be interested in my ancestors. Sadly most of the McFarlanes died
at young ages. Hannah , my grandmother died in Latchford Ontario (Renfrew County) in 1909 leaving
5 young children. The village of Latchford is named after Frank Latchford, member of Parliament, and
an elder at St. Patrick's Basilica on Kent Street in downtown Ottawa).
I recently found some McFarlane descendants but it has been from 1909 to 2004 to find
this tiny connection.
I just thought you might be interested in my Lochaber connection. I searched Scotland
for a year for Lochaber and from the wedding in 1892 determined it was Lochaber
Quebec which was all new to me.
If you know of any McFarlanes or Tompkins descendents in that area, interested in
genealogy. I would be interested in learning of them.
Please feel free to use the information I have sent you. It would be nice to find
information on James C McFarlane born at Sea in 1822. and his wife Hannah Tompkins.
There were a lot of Tompkins and McFarlanes in the Buckingham, St. Stephen Church
records ca 1848 to 1948.
Thomas Orr was married to Hannah McFarlane in Ottawa in 1892 at the Presbyterian
Church of England by Reverend Geo. McRitchie. John D. McFarlane and Eliza Jane
Tompkins were witness'. Thomas was a blacksmith in Bryson, Pontiac County, Quebec at that
time. The family moved from Ottawa to Whitney (just east of Algonquin Park on
Highway 60) in 1900, Latchford about 1907,and then to Timmins, Ontario.
I have been unable to identify the church in Ottawa and have wondered if it was
still standing. You cant imagine the thrill of finding James C McFarlane's and
Hannah Tompkin's tombstones in Buckingham, both broken in half but there, and
legible. and the records of the ten McFarlane children recorded in the church
records.

June 14, 2007:
Hello, My name is Avril Yard, I am a McFarlane, I am Scottish, my father's
name was George Thomas McFarlane, who served from 1940/45 in Scotland, in the
Royal Canadian Foresty corp., met my mom hence me. His father was Robert Henry
McFarlane who is the brother to your grandmother Hannah Jane McFarlane
(my date for her is 1887), so that makes us second cousins. I will give you
the infomation I have, some of my date differ to yours but only by a year.
James McFarlane (the 1st) was the father of the james c. McFarlane who was
born on the ship the Earl of Buckinghamshire, my date was 1821, he was from
Paisley in Scotland. I will get round to finding out more from this side of
the McFarlanes. William Thomas McFarlane (father of your grandma) married Mary-Ann
Gutcher b. Dec3 1849 in Rolph township, m. 3rd Sept 1873 in Rolph township
Renfrew County, Ontario. (Mary-ann was the daughter of George Gutcher & Lynda Evans
m. Aug 24 1846 Pembroke Ontario). William Thomas McFarlane had a farm in Point
Alexander the road is called Burks Rd. there is a small church on the main highway
where some of William's children are buried but only the names on the church
notice, the graves are marked with small white crosses, my grandmother is there,
her name was Christina holmer, Isabella McFarlane Mary clara McFarlane and
I'm not sure but I think your Grandma also. After William died Robert (my granddad)
& Bemjamin ran the farm then latterly Robert who then sold it and moved to
Timmins Ontario. There was also an adopted sister of 4 yrs, Mary Margaret Pinagor,
children were shipped over by Queen Victoria, I hope this all makes sense to you,
there are some McFarlanes living still in Renfrew County. We are coming to
Canada on the 23rd Aug., this year to uncle Andy's (Robert Andrew McFarlane)
50th wedding anniversary. maybe you're close by that we could meet, the other
cousin's are Hoffman and Dole, which I'll explain later, I'm sure they'd love
to hear from you, maybe I could give you their addresses. Also there's an old
schoolhouse museum at Point Alexander, there is a lot of info there about
William Thomas McFarlane and his Family. I do have a few picture is you would
like them maybe not of your side but there is one of a Gutcher.
I'm so excited I found your page. hope you will get in touch.
Kindest regards
... Avril
