William LUCAS and Margaret TELFORD
from County Cavan, Ireland to Huntley Township
ML# 383 on the McCabe List

December 7, 2007:

Hi,

I’m a descendant of William and Margaret and I saw your post of 2001 :

“In 1822 William and Margaret (nee Telford) Lucas and their family came to Huntley Township from County
Cavan with their friends the McDowells. The Lucas family relocated to Bristol
close to John during the 1830s. Sister Elizabeth and husband John Connolly came too.”

Can you tell me where this information came from, is it in a book, or a history account?

I am a decendent of one of his sons James Lucas b.1826 Canada,d. 18 Feb 1887 Little
River, Oconto Co, Wisconsin, USA

Thank you for any information you could pass on,

Lynne Lucas Robison

December 29, 2007: Hi Al, Still getting familiar with the site and saw that you commented on a list called McCabe’s. You said that William was listed as having a brother in Cavan, Ireland. How can I get to the information on McCabe’s list? Are there any other Lucas’ using the site or am I the first … I guess I could not be the first one? With all these different places to look, I’m finding out little bits here and there, life Lucas’ lived in Huntley Township before Bristol, Pontiac County, Quebec. I even found a picture of William Lucas on the Municipality of Bristol website … boy was I shocked. We have no pictures of him! And I am now sending it out to the relatives! Thanks for all your help, ... Lynne Lucas Robison ___________________________ Hi Lynne: Thanks for your e-mail. Can you send me the link to the Bristol web site which has the photo of William Lucas? The McCabe List was a petition in 1829 in the Ottawa area whereby the people already settled here, recommended relatives who were still in Ireland and who would make good settlers in Canada. The person in Ireland was asked to provide a reference as to character, etc. The reference person for William Lucas's brother was the Reverend Mr. Hales. In 1829, the William Lucas family here consisted of four males and two females but no names or ages are given for them. There are very few photos of these persons on the McCabe List! Thanks again. ... Al _____________________________ Hi Al, Here is the picture and the site is www.bristolmunicipality.com/history.html. Glad I could find something worth while! I ‘ve been on this computer for two straight days trying to get familiar with the Canadian areas and type of documents. And thank you for your help to understand the details of what I am looking at for the first time. Was McCabe’s List from Bristol or Huntley area, I don’t remember if the site said the town it was from.??? Do you know if William’s brother Thomas ever made it to Canada?
Names in the photo: Robert Ireland, William Lucas, Joe Morris, Joe Henderson, Ed Graham, Sam Smiley, A.W. MacKechnie, Charles Taber. (Note: What Men They Were! by S. Wyman MacKechnie, Pontiac Printshop Ltd., Shawville, Quebec, 1975, ISBN 0-919942-00-8. (Thanks to Mark Cullen). An excellent history of the pioneers of Hull and Pontiac County. ... Al) We think we might have a picture of James Lucas too. But it is not confirmed at all, just guesses. John Lucas lived next door to James in Oconto, Wisconsin, USA. I linked John and James to William due to the obituary of John: “Oconto County Reporter March 27, 1903: John Lucas died at his home in the town of Oconto, Sunday, March 22, 1903, aged 87 years. Deceased was born in Calvin (Cavan?), Ireland, and when but seven years old came to Bristol, Canada, and in 1857 to the town of Oconto and resided there until the time of his death. He leaves a wife and five children living, three having preceded him to the grave. The living are William and John Lucas of Couillardville, Mrs. P(eter) (Lucas). Krummey of Manistique, Michigan, Mrs. Lewis Schaal of Gillett and Mrs. Flora Clavin of Juneau, also one brother in Canada. The funeral was held Wednesday from the Couillardville church, the Rev. Boteler officiating, and the remains laid at rest in Evergreen cemetery. The relatives from out of town who attended were Mr. and Mrs. James Lucas and Mrs. Dan Deacon of Ingalls, Michigan, Mr. and Mrs. James Smiley of Pestigo, Mr. and Mrs. R. Telford and family of Little River and Mrs. P Krummey of Manistique.” And the listing of his burial: Source: Evergreen Cemetery Listing, Oconto WI: John Lucas 87yrs and &7mons Calvin, Ireland d. 25 mar 1903 So I think we have a connection that is fairly solid. If you can give me any leads to look further please let me know. Thanks again so much, Lynne
April 2, 2010: The family of Andrew Lucas and Elizabeth Edwards settled in Beckwith Township.
New December 17, 2011: I don't know where I copied it from, but I have some correspondence between the two of you about Lucas relatives in the Oconto, Wisconsin, area. I am a descendent of Robert and Elizabeth (Elder) Telford who came from Quebec and lived in Little River, Oconto County, Wisconsin. They were my Great Grandparents, and I have most of the information on their children and grandchildren. I would love to share information on the families. I know that Robert's parents were Robert and Ann, and she came to live with them in Oconto, presumably after she became a widow. I have yet to tie them into any of the families that lived in the Shawville / Bristol area of Quebec, but know that there would be a connection. A lot of the information that is in Ancestry.com show Robert as being the son of George and Jane (Kennedy) Telford, but I have yet to determine if those people have the correct Robert listed. It would be nice if I could finally tie him into that family, as there is a lot of information out there on them. If I can look for information in the Oconto area, please let me know. I get over there 4-5 times a year - it is only 100 miles from here, and since both of my parents were from there, and I lived there for several years, I have done extensive research there. I look forward to hearing from both or either of you. Sue Westergaard
