Hedgerow of Butternut and Walnut Trees just south of
Berrigan Street in Barrhaven
(Plaque Dedicated to the Pioneer Madden Family and others)
October 25, 2010:
Good morning Mike,
Some time ago we had corresponded with respect to the hedgerow of Butternut and Walnut Trees just off
Berrigan Street in Barrhaven. At the time we were discussing the idea of installing a plaque in memory
of the original settlers in the Barrhaven area. Well the plaque is to be installed next week at a
commemorative ceremony at noon on October 27th.
I am sending this email on behalf of Nicole Parent who is the chair of the Ottawa Forests and Geenspace
Advisory Committee to invite you and hopefully some of the folks still in the area who are descendants
of the original settlers. Nicole's email invitation is below with the particulars.
It would be appreciated if you could extend this invite to individuals that you know would appreciate
this initiative and let us know if you can make it to the ceremony - we would love to finally meet you!
Regards,
Richard Pell
Here is Nicole Parent's invitation:
Please join me in commemorating the Butternut and Black Walnut Homestead
and Conservation of the Urban Forest
Dear friends,
Great News!
The Berrigan Butternut fencerow and Black Walnuts will finally be recognized.
Do you remember when:
We, the OFGAC, and Hank Jones of the Eastern Ontario Chapter of the Nut Growers of Ontario walked the area and identified
a Butternut fencerow, Black Walnuts and other trees?
We, the OFGAC, prepared an inventory of the Butternut and Black Walnut trees and worked with the consultant to put
our information on their drawings?
We worked on the wording for a commemorative plaque to acknowledge the pioneers who had settled here ? All that
research, draft proposal and subsequent approval by OFGAC?
We had made sure that some funds would be available when the time came to make the plaque and install it,
as well as, setting aside giant boulders from the construction site at the time?
Well, it is now a reality!
The plaque has been made and is being installed at the Berrigan location, at the entrance to the Park & Ride of
the Strandherd Transit Station (where we had previously secured boulders for this event).
As former members of the OFGAC familiar with this project and now that it has come to fruition, I really would
like for you to join me and celebrate this milestone !
You are cordially invited to attend the official ceremony, to be held on Wednesday October 27th at noon at the Berrigan
location. The entrance is from Berrigan Drive, off of Greenbank Road and there is lots of free parking, and the
buses run right to this spot. I will try and have hot apple cider there for us from a local apple orchard, and am
preparing a short story for the local media.
I sincerely hope that you can join me at this celebration. Your presence would be most appreciated.
