John Joseph McGEE
Clerk of the Privy Council and father of
Frank McGEE, Professional Hockey Player
November 21, 2005:
During the past month or so, four of us have been researching the McGee family
who came from County Armagh, Ireland to Bytown in 1826. It seems that four brothers
came here to work on the canal and obtained land at South Gloucester in the 1830's.
This research by Mardelle Considine, Mary Quinn, Michael Daley and myself has
also followed several tangents, including possible links to Frank McGee who was
a professional hockey player for the Ottawa Silver Seven. He died in France during
WW1.
One-eyed Frank McGee was the cornerstone of one of the greatest teams in hockey
history. During his tenure with the Ottawa Hockey Club and Ottawa Silver Seven,
the franchise won or defended the Stanley Cup over three consecutive years from
1903 to 1905. McGee's superior puckhandling skills and gifted scoring touch made
him one of the most feared offensive threats of his day.

for the link).
Frank McGee's father was John Joseph McGee who was a half brother of Thomas D'Arcy
McGee who was a father of Confederation and who was assassinated on Sparks Street
in 1868. John Joseph was Clerk of the Privy Council from 1882 to 1907. You can see his
picture here.

There will be more to come for this page over the next while. By the way, we
have not established a connection between Darcy McGee and our South Gloucester gang yet.
