John McNAMARA and Winnifred ROWAN
Ireland to Buckingham / Mayo, Quebec area
June 11, 2004:
I am related to the McNamara family from this region and am at the point
where I need some primary documents to hopefully locate where in Ireland
the family orignally emigrated from.
I have gone back as far as John and Winnifred (Rowan) McNamara, with no
details on their wedding so I suspect they were married in Ireland. I believe
they arrived from Ireland sometime after 1825 as their eldest son Thomas
was born in Ireland in 1825 (per the 1881 census) but his younger brother
John (my gggrandfather John>John>John>Elmer>Donald>Dawn) is indicated as
being born in Canada.
There was a famine in Ireland in 1830 and I suspect the family emigrated
under some kind of poor law scheme, but I can't find the family in any
shipping records I have been able to locate.
What I need now is marriage records that will hopefully have details of
where in Ireland the family was from. Some of this family is buried at
St.Malachy's, although I have not seen any gravestones.
Thomas McNamara b1825 m Ann Burke d/o Edward Burke and Mary Lavall
10 Oct 1866 in Buckingham, Quebec
John McNamara b 06 Jan 1832 m Ellen Rowe d/o Edward Rowe and Margaret Mulvany
06 May 1863 at St. Gregoire de Naziance in Buckingham, Quebec
If you have an address or contact for the churches in the region where I
could write/email and get copies of certificates, it would be greatly appreciated.
thank you,
Dawn (McNamara) Copeman

Hi Dawn:
Thanks for your e-mail.
I had a quick look through some old church records and there were McNamaras
in the Ottawa area early. A Mathew McNamara came from Mallow, County Cork with the
Peter Robinson settlers in 1823. Your McNamaras may have been connected to him and
may have come over a few years later. I don't know where Mathew McNamara settled,
but the Peter Robinson settlers settled arount Huntley Township and there is a
connection between some McNamaras in Huntley (or Fitzroy) and the Lavall family
at St. Malachy's, Mayo, Quebec. I'll dig this record out for you.
There was a Lawrence McNamara who had roots in County Clare. He was in this
area in the 1830's. There was also a McNamara family from County Tipperary
who settled at Gloucester, related to the Hardgrove family. Some of these
folks went to the Maniwaki area later on.
Sean McConnery has records of the cemeteries in the Buckingham area, and
also in the Maniwaki area. His e-mail address is seanmcc@monisys.ca and his
web site is at http://cemetery-index.tripod.com/ . I'm sending a copy of this
e-mail to him. He may have further information in regards to church addresses, etc.
where you can write to obtain copies of marriages, etc.
I'll start a new page on my site for your ancestors on the weekend and will add
some church records which may ring a bell for you. For some reason, I have it
in my head that this McNamara family came from County Mayo, but I don't know why.
Maybe Sean will have some info for us.

July 24, 2005:
Hello, My name is Arthur McNamara, my father, grandparents, ggrandparents, are from Masson,
Papineau, Buckingham, Quebec. I think there is a connection . My ggrandfather
Patrick McNamara b- 4-20-1844, m Mary Burke b-1850, date of marriage 4-16-1868.
Mary Burke parents were Edward Burke, and Mary Lavell aka Lavall b-1821,
married 5-16-1842. Could your Anne Burke and my Mary Burke be sisters?
I have traced my family back to 1799, in Shannon, Ireland and it stops. All of our
family from my grandfather down moved to the Detroit, Michigan, USA area.
My home e-mail is BadgeL99@aol.com, you should get my work.

October 14, 2005:
Hi,
I was doing some genealogical research of my own, and came across your discussion
of McNamara history in Buckingham.
In researching family ties in Houghton, Michigan, USA, I came across a bibliographic
reference to my great-great-grandfather, Edward McNamara's birthplace. The record
says that he was born in Buckingham, Three Rivers District, before moving west to
Huron County, then to Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
His Death Record indicates that he was born in January 1847.
The LDS Familysearch website has a record for an Edward McNamara, born "About 1846"
in Buckingham, Papineau, Quebec, with parents Edward McNamara (born in Ireland
"about 1799") and Mary Burke (born in Ireland "about 1825"). There's no source
information for this listed. It also lists them as having been married "about 1843"
in Buckingham, Papineau, Quebec.
First off, is it at all a strange happenstance that we have 3 McNamara-Burke
marriages in the same area? I have no idea if this means two close families or a
just a lot of people named McNamara and Burke in the area.
Also, if any of you would be able to help me either with data or with addresses
of places that might have additional information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Pete McNamara

Hi Al,
Sure, adding my info to the web page would be no problem. At some point, I hope
to get out to that area to do some digging around for more details, but for now,
this is pretty much all I have on that branch. Actually, I just got a copy of
Edward's death certificate, which indicates his father was named Edward, not Patrick,
but his mother *is* listed there as Mary Burke.
