John McNEELY -- from County Down, Ireland
to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 1800's

July 8, 2008:

This photo is the originator of my McNeely tree (to follow shortly)- John McNeely who came
from County Down, Ireland. He came to Ottawa (like so many others) to help build the
Rideau Canal. As far as I know, there is no relation to the Carleton Place McNeely family
on your website (aside from the same name and perhaps somewhere back in time they are
related, but right now, there's nothing to indicate this yet). Mary Quinn submitted the
photo of Daniel McNeely and Catherine McKeown's / McEwen 5 daughters - below - Daniel is the eldest
of John McNeely's children.

Here is a John McNeely married to a Paula Sloan. This may be the same John McNeely,
although Paula is an unlikely first name in the 1840's:

New July 17, 2009: Hello everyone! I was delighted to see your posting of McNeely family info on the internet--especially the photo of John McNeely and the 5 daughters of Daniel and Catherine McKeown. How did folks find out where in Ireland John McNeely was from and Mary Sloan's surname? Is anyone back any further and found fun stuff like pictures of where they got married -- Canada? or back in Ireland and came together? I hope at least one of you still has these email addresses! I am the oldest grandchild of Mary Helen McNeely. I have been stumbling around on the internet this year to flesh out what I learned in coming across the Harold George Perry John McNeely booklet. My teenage daughter found the John McNeely photo 2 evenings ago and is really excited (as am I) to know what else any of you know about our family that you would share? Pictures are precious to me. Anyway, between them I have no pictures other than school yearbooks and maybe ?? I am in the background as a very little girl at Rine Christmas/Thanksgivings or Independence Day gatherings at Uncle James "Jim" McNeely and MaryAlyse Larue McNeely's cottage on Brigg's Lake or later home on Fonda Lake in Brighton, Michigan, USA, or my Aunt Therese's wedding-- before John Thomas Rine moved so far away from his Michigan family in the mid 1970's. I put my line and a few of the growing bunch of internet things I found or which people on www.genealogy.com genforums found for me in this email. ... Terri Edward McNeely and Mary Sullivan Edward John James McNeely or Edward James John McNeely b. 1 Oct 1894; d. 22 Jan 1973 (was he possibly adopted as a young boy by John and Susan Davis McNeely? oddities on census records); Married on 16 Sep 1918 in Wayne Co., Michigan to Mary L. or S. (or both middle initials) Sullivan b. Aug 1896; d. 2 Nov 1972 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan; "Irish divorce" later in life but still legally married. Mary Sullivan was daughter of Patrick Sullivan b. abt 1849 in Ireland; d. 5 Jan 1899; was married on about 1884 to Elizabeth Egan or Brick ("of Canada"), name changes through different records -- on Edward and Mary's 1918 marriage record "bride's parents are Patrick Sullivan and Elizabeth Egan." She was a fairly young widow with 6 young children so may have remarried several times and could possibly have had a first short marriage before Patrick. In 1920 her son Edward's marriage record lists "mother's maiden name as Elizabeth Martin." Patrick Sullivan was son of Timothy Sullivan and Lucy Rice John James McNeely and Mary Quinn John James McNeely b. 3 June 1861; d. 8 May 1929; married 18 Aug 1891 to Mary Quinn b. 15 Jan 1861 or 1864; d. 3 Feb 1941 Marriage register image very clearly shows the groom using the name "James" but all the dates are right (remembering that his son Edward shows up with the middle names James and John at different times, so perhaps the H. G. Perry Booklet just didn't know that this John McNeely married to Mary Quinn also had a "James" thrown into the mix of his names.) Mary Quinn 28y born East Templeton, Ottawa County, Quebec; daughter of Michael Quinn and Mary Maloney married 18 August 1891 Carleton County, Ontario James McNeely 30 y born in North Gower, Ontario, Canada to John McNeely and Susan Davis. Place of residence when married will be Michigan. Sponsors: Charles McNeely, North Gower, Ontario and "Tini" Quinn, (Templeton only, no east listed on sponsor's line) Templeton, Qc Mary Quinn and James McNeely; both listed Roman Catholic married on 18 August 1891 (but marriage officially registered in Nepean records books on 25 June 1992 ) by Rev. T. J. Cole P.P. I can't read the next line after the parish priest's name very well yet--probably St. ?????? Ch. for Church. TD Mary Quinn parent and sibling information: Michael Quinn and Mary Maloney can be found in the Canada censuses of 1871, 1881, 1891, 1900 and 1911 "Brigitte" born to Michael and Mary Maloney 8 Feb 1858 Pointe Gatineau, Quebec, aged 9 days. The registers of Pointe Gatineau are in a real bad shape. One can hardly read them; could not find Mary's baptism or any of other members of family. According to 1901 census Michael Quinn born August 1829 Ireland arrived in Canada in 1847 and Mary Maloney born 1830 Ireland arrived in Canada in 1840. Census 1881 Quebec Ottawa Co. Edward shows up later but is then listed second oldest--after James G. and before Michael Daniel. 1910, 1920, 1930 - the son James/James G. [b. Oct 1888; married 1860 to Susan Davis b. 1839; d. 5 Dec 1926 Possibility for Susan Davis parents from my genforum inquiry: From church records: Susan Davis , father George Davis , mother Jan born 7/9/1839 , christened 29/9/1839 Cloghran-Swords , Dublin , Ireland **Susan Davis: Born near Dublin, Ireland in Sep 1839 and died 5 Dec 1926. Burial Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Immigrated to Canada at the age of 10 in 1849. In the summer of 1851 Susan at age 11 was living with John and Jane Keys in a log house in Huntley Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were born in England, but the Genealogical Office of Ireland after a detailed search of available sources, was unable to locate records of Susan's parents. About 1916, Susan left Alpena, Michigan to live with her daughter, Elizabeth McNeely Perry, in Wyandotte, Michigan, which was her principal residence for the next ten years until her death in 1926, although she regularly visited and stayed with her other children in Toledo, Ohio and Detroit. (Booklet says "See husbands notes for more family history.") This data above from McNeely booklet by Harold George Perry b. 1911; d. 1995 in Ft. Lauderdale Florida.** In family of John and Mary Quinn McNeely above is a reference to groom's parents as John and Susan Davis McNeely on son John James McNeely's marriage register from Nepean, Carleton County to Mary Quinn: Marriage register image very clearly shows their son as the groom using the name "James" but all the dates are right (remembering that his son Edward shows up with the middle names James and John at different times, so perhaps the H. G. Perry Booklet just didn't know this grandfather of his, married to Mary Quinn, also had a "James" thrown into the mix of his names.) John McNeely b. about 1795 in Ireland (who was still alive at same property from 1851 to 1871 census but not listed in 1881) and Mary b. about 1801; d. 27 Oct 1853. They lived in North Gower Township, Carleton County and had at least 7 children named Daniel, Anne, Mary, John, James, Thomas and Francis. ... Terri Dance
