McNULTY surname in Buckingham, Quebec
and Ottawa, Canada area
in the 1800's
November 8, 2004:
Hello.
I was wondering if you could help me. My great great
grandfather, Joseph McNulty, was born in Buckingham in
1842 to James and Catherine, and I was wondering about
getting a hold of church or census records of the
family. They moved to Illinois, USA, in 1858. How would I
go about finding out?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Liam and Carol:
Thanks for your e-mail. It's very interesting.
Do you mind if I add it to my web site, on my Buckingham page? There are
probably others who are researching the McNulty surname as well.
The 1881 census of the Buckingham area shows several McNulty families who
may be descended from the original James and Catherine. In fact there's an
82 year old widow named Catherine living with a family headed by 46-year old
Patrick who may be her son. Did your GGGGrandmother, Catherine, go to
Illinois also, or did she remain in Canada?
Many of the families in the Buckingham area came from County Mayo in
Ireland. Do you know if the McNulty families came from Mayo?
I also have some early church records, 1830's and 1840's from downtown
Ottawa which mention some McNultys.
I'll try and get all this info together in the next day or so. Carol may
have more to add as well. She's familiar with the Buckingham area.

_____________
I'd be glad for you to put my info on your website.
My James and Catherine McNulty (according to the 1880
Census, James was born in Ireland, but Catherine,
while Irish, was born in Quebec), moved with Joseph
and the rest of their children (Michael, Ellen, Mary
and Anna, possibly an older son Robert who stayed in
Quebec) to Bureau County, Illinois from Quebec in
1858. James and Catherine were in the 1880 census in
Stark County, Illinois, and died there in 1886. I do
not know where in Ireland James was from.
There may also be a connection with the McNulty's in
L'Orignal and VanKleek Hill, ON. Joseph married a
young woman from VanKleek Hill who had recently
immigrated, and her maiden name was McNulty. She had
a brother Hugh living nearby, and other family. This
is about 60 miles from Buckingham. It seemed too much
of a coincidence to me that she would move to this
rural county in Illinois and marry into another set of
McNulty's originally from just 60 miles away in
Buckingham. Apparently there was a James and
Catherine McNulty there as well, with some eleven
children, but it's a different couple, and I do not
know where they ended up. They were having children
in the 1830's. Could they have moved to Buckingham,
and this be your James and Catherine McNulty?
I look forward to hearing from you again. Thanks
again.
Liam

More from Liam:
Al and Carol:
Thank you so much. I just had some help from a friend
over the weekend, and you can add another county.
James McNulty was from Dromore, County Tyrone. His
parents were James McNulty and Ellen MaGuire, and his
wife was Catherine O'Hare, born in Canada to Irish
immigrants Robert O'Hare and Mary Ann Norris. I do
not know where in Canada they were from. I am still
going to try to get a hold of the 1851 census info,
and church records and possibly cemetery
transcriptions relevant to these folks. Thanks again!
Liam
September 29, 2009:
Hi Liam and Al,
I have some McNulty information; I hope you find it helpful:
From the St-Grégoire-de-Naziance, Buckingham, Gatineau, BMS (Births, Baptisms and Sépultures) register:
Children of James and Catherine O’Hare:
Michael born: 10 aug 1840
Joseph 1842
Ellen 06 jul 1845
Mary Anne 24 dec 1847
Anne 21 aug 1851
I could not find any sign of them after 1851.
I did find them in 1870 census of Indiantown, Bureau County, Illinois, USA
However the census give Ellen 22 year old 1848 not 1845, But it also shows James 58 (Ireland) and
Catherine 56 (Canada) and another siblings, Victoria 11 year old (Canada) 1859. Using a correction
of 3 years; we get 1856-1857. That’s possible.
I found the USA census data on Ancestry.com.
As for putting my name and email no problem I am actually doing some work on Farrellton and encountered
the name McNulty quite a few times.
