MONDOUX pioneers in North Plantagenet
also THIBEAULT / THIBAULT
January 26, 2006:
During the period from about 1850 to 1900 the people of Quebec were on the move.
More than one million persons left the province and emigrated to New England in
the USA, to the Canadian and American west and to Ontario.
A major migration from Quebec led settlers to Prescott County, between
L'Orignal and Plantagenet. In 1854, the seigneurial system was disbanded in Quebec
(the seigneuries had become over-populated and were debt-ridden). Many Francophone
farmers from the Montreal area came to Prescott County.
The Mondoux family settled in the Curran, Ontario area.
An article regarding Quebecers' migration to Prescott County is Boom and Bust:
The Demography and Economy of the Lower Ottawa Valley in the Nineteenth Century,
by Chad Gaffield (White Binder #3).
Other French-Canadian villages in the Curran area are St. Isidore and Fournier.

Hi Al,
I am looking for Francois Mondoux and Marguerite Portelance in Curran, Ontario.
They had several children, some died in childbirth and guess they were married around
1850. Francois died in 1870 at the age of 56 and was buried in Curran. Have you
come across these names? Thanks for any help,
Richard Philion

Judging by the dates of the children's births, these families came to North Plantagenet
in the late 1870's from Quebec.

Thanks to Cheryl for the following:
Hi
Noticed this Posting and wish I could help but at the moment I do not have a lot
on the Mondoux line.
If and when new information comes about I have a connection way back. We could be
related distantly.
Catherine Marguerite Mondoux married Francois Thomas Dit Tranchemontagne on 13 May 1734
in Immaculate Conception Trois Riveres Quebec
Catherine was the Daughter of Aubin Mondou and Madeleine Provencher.
My own Thomas line ended up in Rockland Ontario previous from St. Andre De Avellin
and Montebello. I haven't found a date when they moved to Ontario though can't
find them in 1881 Census.

Al:
I have been searching for the Mondoux family. The family moved from
Yamaska, Quebec to the Curran Ontario area. I am interested in this area
(i.e. Curran, Russell, Rockland and in Quebec Montebello & Thurso it appears
the family spread through the countryside. My father was born in
Montebello.
Any information would be most helpful and as well I would share information
with other interested parties.
Regards
Pete Mondoux
