Thomas MOORE and Catherine (DOHANY?)
Nenagh, County Tipperary, Ireland to Black Rapids (Ottawa, Ontario) to Maniwaki, Quebec
November 22, 2001:
Hi Al
Came across your web page , BYTOWN OR BUST, a few months ago and have been watching it
closely for info on MOORE'S.
My name is Delbert Moore and I live in the town of Maniwaki Que.
I have been researching my Moore family since the 1980's, but hit a brick wall finding
out where they came from. Only lately I found out they came from Black Rapids, Nepean Ont.
My gr gr grandfather is Thomas Moore, his wife ,Catherine (Johany) ( Dohany) ( Dohney),
can't make out the exact spelling from church records. I have found that they had 9 children
none born around here, Ellan, John, Michael, Thomas, Catherine, Ann, Bridgette, Martin, and William.
Michael, Thomas, Bridgette, and William, all settled St Famille D' Aumond range,a, called (River Joseph )
at the time, between 1856,and 1858.
have you ever come across any of those names,or does any body in your area,or web site?
Could you tell me what parish would have records,so i could look them up,or maybe in census records,
thanks , regards.
Delbert Moore.
Hi Delbert:
Thanks for your e-mail regarding your Moore ancestors.
I'll e-mail you when I set up a new page for them, probably later today.
Where did you get the info that Thomas was at Black Rapids? I believe there
was a fair sized settlement there when the dam and locks were being built,
around 1830.
Also, do you have any birth dates for Thomas or any of his children? There were
a couple of Moore families in that area, some Protestant and some Catholic.
Thanks again!
... Al
P.S. Is it possible that Catherine's last name was DOWNEY ? There were Downey's
near Black Rapids, but on the other side of the Rideau River in Gloucester Township.
=============================
(Later in the day)
Thomas Moore, the elder seems to have died between 1849 and 1852.
There were actually ten children, not nine. The new one is Mary.
Here are birthdates for the children, all born in Upper Canada:
Michael 1832
William 1834
Thomas 1836
Mary 1838
Bridget 1840
Martin 1841
Catherine 1843
Ellen 1845
Ann 1848
John 1849.
This may be a case of Thomas Sr. working on the canal at Black Rapids and POSSIBLY
later joining Father Deleage's party of settlers from South Gloucester to Maniwaki.
There are old Moores buried at South Gloucester.

Hi -
Sorry I didn't send all of my message - error with computer...
I will give a few more details - because the names in your message, Vickie, don't correspond with what I have.
Catherine Rivet (Revah) b. Dec 6, 1862 -marr. John White on Apr 7, 1885
John was son of John White & Mary-Ann Sheehy. I believe the 1st John White was the Indian agent.
Hope this helps.

September 4, 2003:
My grt-grandmother was Isabella Turney (Torney or Tourney). Her older sister
married a Patrick Moore who was born in Queen's county, Ireland. Patrick's
father was David Moore. this family is listed in a series published in 1993
in L'Outauais Genealogique called "Histoire des familles de la mission de
Maniwaki" par Robert Chartrand. Both families lived in close proximity to
each other in the Maniwaki area. Maybe this will help.

John Alexander Moore
Hello folks:
I have been trying to break a dreadfully strong wall for about a year or more
now regarding the above Moore gentleman. I have
little info to go on but will share with you, in case it might ring a bell.
John Alexander Moore living in Montreal City in 1885., parents being:
Thomas Moore and Mary Ann Forres married Miss Lavina Mark
whose parents were: Hugh Mark & Eunice Reid of East Hawkesbury, Ontario.
The marriage of these two people took place at
Stanley Protestant Church, Montreal on 15 April, 1885.
In Mayof 1885 a child was born named: Vina Moore (born in Quebec)....
I don't know where.
Levina Mark-Moore died in June of 1885 at Vankleek Hill, Ontario.
don't know where she is buried.
The child Vina Moore, was raised by her grandmother Eunice Mark in
Maxville (on the census up to 1901). Then when the grandmother
died in 1904, the obit stated that Vina Moore of Montreal was in
attendance.
This is all I have to go on.
If anything sounds familiar, please let me know.
Thank you and happy holidays.

November 30, 2004:
Good morning all. I hope you can still all be found at these
addresses.
http://www.bytown.net/moore.htm
I think I recognize some of the names on this string of messages.
Delbert, and Eldeen.
I originally hail from the Kitigan Zibi Indian Reserve just outside of
Maniwaki. I have been helping my wife, Lisa as she attempts to trace her
Moore family roots.
At this time, there are some things I would like to share with some of
you. Not real helpful information but definitely interesting:
1) Delbert, my wife photocopied a page several years ago when she was
researching the McNeil side of Glen Moore's roots. It came from a book
at the Archives building (part of La Maison du Citoyen) in Hull.
Although we cannot recall the title of the book, we are going to look
into it.
-On our page (948), there is a record of a marriage between William
Moore, son of Thomas and Catherine Dohony, to Bridget Hardgrove,
daughter of Michael and Bridget McNamara. Wedding took place in
Maniwaki on June 4, 1861.
-There is a record of a marriage between Richard, son of Thomas and
Mary Hardgrove, to Winefred Thompson, daughter of John and Jane Moran.
This wedding took place in Maniwaki on July 19, 1897.
-There is a record of a marriage between Thomas, son of the late Thomas
and Mary Hardgrove, to Agnes Thompson, daughter of John and Jane Moran.
This wedding took place in Maniwaki on August 5, 1901.
-Finally, there is also record of a marriage between Russell-George,
son of Thomas-Francis and Agnes Thompson; Saskatchewan, to
Rose-Elisabeth McAuley, daughter of Joseph and Elisabeth Carroll;
Ottawa. This wedding took place in Ste-Famille d'Aumond on September
26, 1932.
While I figure you know all this, it's interesting to note that
brothers William and Thomas likely married two Hardgrove sisters (I say
likely since there is no record of Thomas JR's wedding to Mary
Hardgrove). Then Thomas JR's sons Richard and Thomas (Thomas-Francis)
married two Thompson sisters. I also noted from the announcement that
Thomas JR must have passed away between the weddings of Richard and
Thomas-Francis.
2) Vickie and Eldeen: My brother from the Kitigan Zibi Reserve launched
a history book of our community this past September. The book was the
result of two years of very detailed and pain-staking research. In it,
there is mention of John White being appointed the first Indian Agent to
the River Desert Algonquins, and serving in this capacity from 1860 to
1874. After C.L. Baudin takes over this role from 1874 to 1875, next in
the sequence is Patrick Moore from 1876 to 1879. What I am trying to
confirm for my wife is that this Patrick Moore may have been her
Great-Great Grandfather. While we have been able to confirm that her
Great-Great Grandfather definitely was named Patrick (who married
Elisabeth Torney in 1856 at Old Chelsea), we have not found any evidence
that he was the same Patrick Moore who served as Indian Agent. Has
anyone ever come across this info?
Furthermore, the history book also mentions that prior to being
appointed Indian Agent, John White had held about 130 hectares of land
on the reserve in 1857. John White occupied three lots while his son
John JR occupied two. So definitely, the older John White was the
Indian Agent. (NP)
3) James, as you would have seen earlier in this e-mail, I have a
record of a Pat Moore, son of David and the late Mary Moore marrying an
Elisabeth Torney, daughter of Hugh and the late Elisabeth Wallace at Old
Chelsea on July 28, 1856. Thank you for posting the info about
Isabella's older sister marrying a Patrick Moore from Queen's County,
Ireland. Lisa is now able to trace her Moore roots one generation
further back, and all the way back to Ireland no less!!
Would you know how we can go about obtaining a copy of the series
published in 1993 that you mentioned? I.e. Histoire des familles de la
mission de Maniwaki? That sounds like it could be very helpful to us.
4) Al, I've seen your name all over the "Bytown or Bust" site. Maybe
you can help us. Lisa's ancestor may actually be listed on official
documents as Glyn Dorn even though we all know him as Glen. Glen's
father was Joseph Nicholas Dorn born in 1890 and died January 16, 1966.
Nicholas' parents were John Patrick Moore and Mary McGoey. And previous
to that, John Patrick's parents were Patrick Moore and Elizabeth Turney.
We would like to know more about this last Patrick.
I hope all of you take the necessary time to read this e-mail. And I
certainly hope it can help just a little bit in uncovering some of the
mysteries.

Hi folks,
I got your names from Anne-Marie Ibell, who has been very helpful in giving
me information about my Irish Canadian relatives (Muldoon, Sheehy, Barrett,
Murphy, etc.) She suggested I contact you because my mother's Aunt Emma
Murphy (actually Margaret Emma Murphy) married Michael John the Baptist
(Mick) Moore.
Here is what I have on the Moore's. If you have any additions/corrections/
whatever, I would be most grateful. I am working with Mick and Emma's
daughter and granddaughter to try and update that part of the family tree.
That you for any help you can provide.

"Hi Mike.
I can definitely tell you some things. However, my papers are all at home. I will get
back to you in the next couple of days.
I am just going by memory here, but I recall that besides having a brother named James Moore,
Patrick also named his youngest child James. This younger James went on to marry a woman
named Emeline (or Evangeline) Fahey. They in turn were the parents of your Grandfather,
Edmund Moore of Maniwaki (1905 - 1932)."

August 27, 2008:
Thanks to Sue for the following research:
From the Drouin records at ancestry.ca:
Patrick Moore (born Ireland) married Elizabeth Torney (born Quebec) on 29 July 1856 at
Old Chelsea, Quebec
The above couple can be found in the 1891 Egan, Ottawa county, Quebec census, surrounded
by Moores and Torneys / Turneys / Tierneys.
Son James in the above census is listed as age 17, so born abt 1874 in Quebec.
He married Emeline Fahey 15 June 1904. She was a daughter of Michael Fahey and Elizabeth
Tracey (who were married 11 Nov 1864). Emeline was born 15 March 1879 and baptized in
South March as "Francis Emiline Fahey".
Their son Edmund Moore (1905 - 1932) married Norah / Morah Laura (or Louisa) Kearney at
Maniwaki on 10 July 1929, just 3 years before Edmund was accidentally killed in October of
1932 at just 26 years of age.
