Martin MULCAHY / MULCAHEY and Mary DOYLE
also James COUGHLAN / COUGHLIN
July 7, 2006:
Hello:
I am searching for any information on these people- my wife's ancestors:
Martin MULCAHY and his wife Mary DOYLE. (Names given on marriage record of
their daughter Anna in 1889- see below).
Most likely from the Osgoode or Ottawa areas. Their daughter Anna Mulcahy was
married 19 Aug. 1889 in Brudenell, Renfrew Co. to George
Coughlan of Ottawa. Roman Catholic. Anna born 8 Mar 1868 according to 1901 census.
The FHL- Pedigree Resource File has an Ann Mulcahy born in Brudenell Sept. 28, 1868
to Michael Mulcahy and Bridget DOYLE. ???
On the Bytown or Bust website you have a page of Doyle families (Dennis KEARNS /
Ellen DOYLE) and a John Mulcahy all listed together.
1. the Mulcahy / Mulcahey family also had relatives in the Peterborough area,
which may hint at the possibility of them being Peter Robinson settlers.
2. also researching the COUGHLAN family from Ottawa. James Coughlan died
1885 in Hintonburgh, aged 86 years, R. Catholic born Co. Tipperary, lived in
Co. Cork. He may have been married in Ireland (spouse unknown) and
emigrated circa 1842-1846 with a son William . A daughter Mary born c. 1846
in Canada. He remarried to Jane Walker, widow of George GARDINER(2 children-
Jane Ann b. 1848 Hull, Quebec, died 1929 in Ottawa, married James BYERS;
and Ellen b. 1850.)
James Coughlan and Jane Walker-Gardiner had at least 4 children:
a. Honora b. 1852
b. James Soloman b. 1853 d. before 1930 Ottawa. Married Jane HANAN.
c. Cornelius b. 1856 d. 1910 Mechanicsville. Married Bridget CUMMINGS.
d. George b. 1858 d. 1950 Ottawa. Married Anna MULCAHY 1889 in
Brudenell, Ont.
Any help or suggestions/contacts would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Updating my MULCAHEY data: the parents of Anna Mulcahey born 1868 and baptized in
Brudenell, Ont. were actually Michael MULCAHEY and Bridget DOYLE. They lived near
Baptiste Lake, Herschel Twp. in Hastings County and seem to have moved there from
Emily Twp., Victoria County in the 1870's. They are buried in St. Ignatius Roman
Catholic Cemetery, Maynooth, Ont. Their tombstones read: "In memory of Michiel Mulcahey,
born in the County of Tipperary, Ireland. Died July 18, 1891 aged 65 yrs." and
"Bridget, beloved wife of M. Mulcahay, a native of the County of Wicklow, Ireland.
Died May 27, 1896 aged 71 yrs., 13 days. May her soul rest in peace".
Since Maynooth was once known as Doyles Corners, I believe that there is a definite
connection between Bridget Doyle and the founders of Maynooth. And since Maynooth
was included in the Brudenell parish- it explains why Anna was baptized in Brudenell
in 1868. A point to be made- the parish entry of her marriage in 1889 to George COUGHLAN
lists her parents as Martin Mulcahey and Mary Doyle. Obviously, a mistake.
Anna's sister Bridget Mulcahey age 29, married Philip O'BRIEN, age 31, born East
Templeton, river man, son of Thomas O'Brien and Alice SULLIVAN on Aug. 1, 1892 in
Herschel Twp., Hastings County.
Anna's brother William Mulcahey remained single, lived on the homestead and built the
main house at Birch Lodge, Baptiste Lake, Hastings Co. I did not see a tombstone for him
in St. Ignatius, Maynooth, but I presume that he was buried there alongside his parents.
Date of death unknown.

Dear Michael and Al,
re: http://www.bytown.net/mulcahy.htm
I've been researching the landing places for those who received assistance to leave the Fitzwilliam Estate in County Wicklow, and I believe
Bridget Doyle Mulcahey, b. Co. Wicklow, is the Bridget Doyle from Kilballyowen on the attached emigration record.
I've also attached the 1861 census page for Michael Mulcahey and Bridget Doyle for what was then called Hastings Road.
A large number of Fitzwilliam emigres settled in Camden, Addington County and later Hastings County. On this same census page are other emigrants
from Kilballyowen: Morgan Doyle (your Bridget's brother?); Daniel Kelly and family; and Patrick and Dorothea/Dolly O'Neal.
I was slowed down a bit with this research because I couldn't understand why the family was in Brudenell in 1868 for Anne's baptism, when
they were in Hastings County in 1861, but it seems that that part of Hastings County North was considered part of Brudenell parish, and
I'm guessing that the priest travelled to the Maynooth area to provide the sacraments.
Do you know the names of Bridget Doyle and Michael Mulcahey's children? Morgan Doyle's children on the 1871 census were Margaret,
Bridget, Agnes, John, and Annie.
Let me know what you think of this, Michael. And Al, I'll send you an update for the chart on Bridget (if it looks likely) and for Patrick and Dolly O'Neal.

Hi again Michael and Al,
I've just found the Brudenell baptism (attached) for Morgan Doyle's dtr Anne, and the godparents were Michael Mulcahey and Bridget Doyle.
So I think Bridget Mulcahey was indeed Morgan's sister.

Hi Anne:
Thanks for the information. It makes perfect sense that Bridget Mulcahy was Morgan Doyle's sister. Michael and Bridget Mulcahy's children,
as far as I know, were: Johanna born c. 1857, Bridget born c. 1861, Catherine born c. 1863, William born c. 1866 and Ann born c. 1868.
Somewhere in my notes, I have William's death in Ottawa in the 1920's or 30's. He may have moved there or been in a hospital there,
near his sister Ann.
A history of Bancroft at this website http://www.ourroots.ca/e/toc.aspx?id=4522 shows Morgan Doyle settling on the east side of the
Hastings Road (now Dungannon Twp.) on Oct. 4, 1856. Also many references to Michael Mulcahy and other Doyle families.
Our family history says that Annie Mulcahy and her family originally came from the Peterborough area. I wonder if they were part of the
Peter Robinson settlers that located in Emily Twp., Victoria County? I cannot find Michael Mulcahy in the 1871 census in Hastings County
or the 1851 census. I need to spend some more time on this.
Anyhow- thanks again. Great information.
