David MYLES / MILES and Catherine RYAN
Ireland to Osgoode Township, Ontario, Canada and to the Gatineau Valley, Quebec, Canada
May 14, 2003:
Hi Al:
I'm looking for records of my Myles family. They first settled in Osgoode about 1839/1841.
Being Irish Catholics I would 'assume' they attended St. Mary's RC church. My understanding
is that church burned down along with all its records. My first relative over's wife was
C(K)atherine Myles and she has disappeared from any records I have found. Then about 1857-59,
they settled permanently in Venosta, Quebec. St. Martins in Martindale became their parish,
although they can be found in various RC churches along the Gatineau and in Ottawa
getting married etc.
There were Myles with some matching names with the second Peter Robinson group, but I'm
unable to match up concretely with any of the Myles names.
Hopefully, leaving no stone unturned.

Hi Garry:
Thanks for your e-mail. I'm also interested in the Myles family.
Here's a baptism which occurred at St. Mary's Church, South Gloucester, (now called
Our Lady of the Visitation),in 1849:
William Myles was born on January 20, 1849, son of David Miles and Catherine Ryan.
The godparents were Nicholas Sullivan and Mary McGee who are my GGGrandparents.
The officiating priest was Father Deleage who brought many of the families up to
the Maniwaki (Venosta?) area to settle in the 1850's.
I'll keep an eye out for your Myles family. Most of these early Osgoode families have
records (before 1848) at Notre Dame downtown (missionaries came from Notre Dame to
the chapel at South Gloucester in the early days) and recorded events in the
registers of Notre Dame.
I'll set up a new page for these folks and will let you know when I find anything more.

Here's another one - this one is registered at Notre Dame:

And it gets curioser:
St. Mary's, South Gloucester,
Jane Dailey / Daley, born Sept 7, 1848, was baptized on October 14, 1848. Her parents were
Michael Daley and Catherine Miles. Godparents were James Johnston and Mary O'Connor.

March 5, 2006:
Mr. Michael Daley has written a 140th Anniversary Commemorative Booklet,
1845-1985 for Our Lady of the Visitation Church which was built in the late
1840's.
Hello Michael, I believe I have corresponded with you some time in the
past. I was wondering if it would be possible to purchase or get a copy
of the above booklet? I am still looking for my Myles family descendants
who were from Ireland and lived in Osgoode for a period of time, before
settling in Venosta, Quebec.

Attached is a marriage document for William Moyler and Agnes Wardrope which took place
11 Nov 1881 in Lanark, Ontario.
I believe this to be the the William Myles / Agnes Wardrobe on your MYLES section in
bytown.net
There are many similars (but also differences).
William Moyler was born in Osgoode in 1854. (It is not 'unusal' for people to 'lie'
about their age when they get married.). William was the son of David Moyler and Catherine
Douglas. He married Agnes Wardrope in Lanark, Ontario. Agnes was born in 1858 in
Ross Township.
William Myles was born in Osgoode in 1846. William was the son of David Myles and
Catherine Ryan. He married Agnes Wardrobe in Carleton Place, Ontario.

Hello everyone, if any of you actually have these e mail addresses still !!
I'm looking for help with the Myles family tree, brief history of why ....
My husband's family were from Wakefield Quebec - the Chemin Clark is named after his uncle
(but spelt incorrectly unless you see the actual sign which someone has corrected !)
On his mothers side he is related to the Myles family, but his mother died many years ago
when he was very young so many details are not known and as well as contacting known
relatives I noticed your details on the computer.
It also helps that our second child has a school project on family trees and we can not
give her details of her Great Grandmother !!
Known information:
Evelyn Ruth Myles married John Milton Clarke.
Her parents were William Myles born approx 1880 in Venosta Quebec died approx 1970 in
Ottawa. He was a Mountie (RCMP) we believe.
Her mother we have no idea but know she died quite young we believe probably in Wakefield
or Ottawa.
The Myles family we are looking for were RC and from Ireland many years ago.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you
... Caroline Clarke

Attached is a marriage certificate for William Myles (note he is listed as a policeman) and
Mary Lilian McDermott for 21 Sep 1916 in Ottawa.
I believe this is the William Myles which Caroline was looking for. If so, I also sent her
the tree which I have on the Myles going back a few more generations.
It turns we are related. My mother's maiden name is McGoey. We have a common direct
ancestry in Thomas McGoey (b abt 1725 in Ireland). My direct line goes thru a different
son of Thomas than yours.
Another famous ancestor of yours is Philemon Wright - the famous lumber baron who 'started'
the lumber trade in 1806 in the Ottawa area.
Here is an 1835 record of Pamela Wright from Notre Dame Cathedral on Sussex Drive.

Garry-
Agnes was a first cousin of my grandmother Mary Catherine Myles (1866-1895). Our family summered
in the second farm house Pat and Aggie owned in 1936 and 37 and elsewhere in Fieldville after that.
My mother and her sister kept in touch with Aggie. Unfortunately no one in my family has pictures of
Aggie and Pat. I remember them fondly and recall how hard working and resourceful they were.
Their fine brick house stood out along the Fieldville Road.
Sorry I dont have anything for you but if I find something I'll get back to you. Have you contacted their grandkids?
Lorne

Hello Lorne.... Nice to hear from you. I do have some pictures and I am sending them to you and Al for his
website if he would like to have them on there as well. The more the older folks are published, the more the
younger folks will perhaps take an interest in their family ancestors and their life stories. Thanks again
and hope the pictures do give you some good memories. In the second picture, from right to left,
Agnace Myles (Field), presumably Patrick Field, and then Archie Myles. In the first picture, left to right are
Violet Myles, Agnace in the center and Nellie on the right.

Hi Al... thought that these pictures would be a worthwhile addition for your Myles pages. As always, thank you very much.
This picture was given to me as a picture of Michael Myles and his wife Mary Alice Grant and two of their children.
But, if you compare the features to the next picture, I don’t think they are the same people. Possibly David Myles and
Catherine Ryan! This seems to be a much earlier picture, perhaps a deguero(?) type. If so, this would probably be the
previous generation and probably Michael. Opinions welcome.....
The following picture is also of Michael Myles and the lady is supposed to be his wife Mary Alice Grant.... opinions?
This picture too is David Myles and his wife Mary Alice Grant and family..

Hello, My name is Jerry Laporte and my Aunt was Mary Jane Laporte and she married Archabald Miles (or Myles). She lived
in Venosta and the details I remember is that Uncle Archie lost an eye and Aunt Mary was in a wheel chair. The laporte
family lived in Venosta and had four children: Michael, Emmet, Martin and Mary Jane. If you have any information that
you can share with me I would appreciate your contributions.
