O'HARE and GILCHRIST Surnames
Calumet Island and the Pontiac area of Quebec, Canada

February 9, 2006:

I too am researching my ancestors from this area and fell upon your website,
with thanks. My grandmother Violet Gilchrist, nee O'Hare, d.o.b. 1900, married
Jack Gilchrist d.o.b. 1880 from Vinton P.Q. in 1925.

The O'Hare family managed the post office at Dunraven from 1885 to 1937 at which
time it was closed according to National Archives of Canada. The First O'Hare
to act as Postmaster was Michael O'Hare from 1885 to 1894. Michael O'Hare would
have been my grandmothers grandfather. It passed to his son John in 1895 and
then to his wife Helen upon his death in 1928. She held the post until 1937.

I'm trying to determine the pattern of immigration and would appreciate any
information or direction on further research.

Phil, you mention range and property lot numbers for 1867. Would any of my forefathers
be on your list? -- (See the list at www.bytown.net/calumetlandowners.htm )

Respectfully yours
Michael J. Gilchrist

August 6, 2008: Hello, My name is Anthony O'Hare. I have recently begun to research my family history and came across your web link. My Grandfather is William T. O'Hare whom came from Calumet Island and migrated to Detriot, Michigan, USA, in 1957 & My great grandfather is John T. O'Hare came to Calumet Island from Ireland and settled with 3 other families one family being the Cahills. I know that my father had spent some time there on Calumet Island when he was younger and has some knowledge that could be useful to you or someone seeking. Yes that would be great if you can add me to that link. My father asked me if i had come in contact with anyone if they could confirm that an old barn had been turned into a restaurant???? On the island.... Thanks again and looking forward to writing to you soon. I would like to exchange any information that would help each other. ...
