Dennis O'NEIL and Mary DRISCOLL
in Marlborough Township
My gggrandfather was
Cornelius O'Neil from O'Neil side road. I think his parent's Dennis
O'Neil and Mary Driscoll may be buried there. Descendants married into
the Haggerty, Hanrahan families etc who all lived on O'Neil side road.

I'm working with a group of Purdy geneologists and we are trying to
organize a family reunion for 2002. It would be neat if we could find
the graveyard for that. One of the women in this group (a distant
cousin of course) is Janet Gorman - she has written to you about Henry
Purdy and Mary McCaulay. Janet is descended from their eldest daughter
and I'm descended from a son, Henry, who married Mary O'Neil (daughter
of Cornelius). I found the tombstone at St. Clare's for Cornelius,
Joannah, and their daughter Mary, not to mention two siblings of my
Grandfather, Joseph Graham, that no-one knew anything about as they died
so young.

Thanks for the Rooney info - but none of them are the Rooney's I'm
looking for. Rooney's in the Fallowfield area actually bought land from
Rooney's who were no relation (family of Bernard Rooney). As far as I
know none of the first Rooney family remains in the immediate area, just
the second, whose original homestead was at Twin Elm. These are the
descendants of Michael Rooney and Joanna O'Connell.
(See also other Rooneys in the area).

My friend who I am helping is Gerry Rooney. Now Gerry told me years ago
about the abandonded graveyard - before I even found out that I was
descended from O'Neil's. We drove down the road and Gerry pointed out
where he thought it was. He said that the Hydro line passed over it
now. Gerry's gone to Florida for the winter. When he gets back I'll
try to remember to ask him if he knows exactly where it is.

Some of Gerry's family include Halpin and Hanrahan. So far we have
found no direct link. His Halpin's lived where the prison farm is at
Burritt's rapids. Who lived next door - O'Neil's. So both of us keep
seeing relatives marrying relatives. Janet's Gorman's are in there as
well. They too have married into the Hanrahan's.

... Marilyn Cottrell

Hi Marilyn: Thanks for the info on the O'Neils and Driscolls, etc. There seems to be an O'Neil family and a Driscoll family who are recorded at St.Michael's in Corkery around 1840, and before. Maybe they "commuted" from the O'Neil Road to church at Corkery for a few years. Most of them seem to have disappeared from the church at Corkery by the 1860's or so, possibly then attending St. Clare's. Do you know when St. Clare's was built?

Al ========== Hello Al, You are right, it didn't get through to Marilyn. Lets see if it does now. It came from the bottom of 'Dennis O'Neil and Mary Driscoll in Marlborough Twp' if you want to correct it. Go ahead and post it on Bytown or Bust. Do any of my O'Neils seem to fit with yours? Regards, Jim Robinson
