September 28, 2002: More from our buddy Taylor Kennedy: Christmas is Coming and so are the CARROLL's ! Hi guys Sorry for that heading. I do love puzzles though. Question one - Who are James and Dorothy Britt. Well it seems simple now. Elizabeth was born Feb.17, 1846, married three times and died Aug.11, 1887. She married John Cunningham born 1798.(This date cooresponds with his age at the time of his death from the 1871 census report). When Elizabeth married John about 1865, she was 19 years old. Her three girls were born 1866, 1868, 1870 and their ages match both the 1871 and 1881 census reports. John died in 1871, and five years later in 1876 she married William Kennedy and she was 30 years old, and again had three more children in 1877, 1879 and 1880. William died in 1882, and an educated guess that she married Michael Britt in 1883 at the age of 37, and had Patrick Britt circa 1884. James and Dorothy Britt had to be Michaels children by his first wife, and here's my logic. In Elizabeth (Ellen) Carroll,Cunningham,Kennedy,Britt Last Will and Testament, all of her children are addressed, except James and Dorothy. This also makes sense why Michael headed for Boston with only the two. Elizabeth Cunningham was married at this time to Thomas Carroll from Quebec, and they were nominated to be guardians for Mary Teresa Kennedy. Thomas Kennedy was nominated as guardian for Michael Kennedy. Martha had already died, but Patrick Britt was still alive. Here's a file on the Carrolls of Huntley Township. I'm a long way from being finished on this one. Take care guys Descendants of Patrick Carroll Generation No. 1 1. PATRICK2 CARROLL (THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1821 in Ireland. He married JANE O'LEARY. Michael Carroll and Anna O'LEARY
Hello, My great grandmother was Margaret Carroll, born about 1857 in Huntley, Canada. I believe her father was Michael Carroll and mother Anna O'Leary. She moved to Wisconsin, USA, and married my great grandfather James McFetridge. They lived in New Richmond, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, until their deaths. Margaret had a brother Daniel born 15 July 1858 in Huntley Ontario, Canada - Death Oct 1926 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He was married to Elizabeth McGrath, daughter of Michael and Julia nee' Manion McGrath. She also had a sister Mary Anne who married Michael McGrath (Jr) and another sister Jane, who also moved to the New Richmond, Wisconsin area and married James Leverty / Laverty. I have found the whole family in the 1861 Census of Carleton, Canada West, Canada . District 7 of Huntley, page 57. I have also found the family in the 1851 Census, before my great grandmother Margaret was born. Michael Carroll is a brother to Patrick Carroll married to Jane O'Leary and son of Thomas Carroll married to a Sara Corcoran(?). Could you tell me, when did they come from Ireland and if there is any older census with the Carroll families? Also where Thomas, Michael and Patrick are buried? I hope to make a trip to Huntley area some day to dig for more information. I've attached a copy of Margaret Carroll McFetridge's Obituary. Marriage record of her sister Jane to James Leverty (Source: ancestry.com). Would love to hear from anyone related to the Carroll's. Thank You, Sandee McFetridge Death Notice, Margarett Carroll McFetridge Marriage - Jane Carroll and James Laverty / Leverty Keywords: McGrath, North Dakota _____________________________________ And here is more research from Taylor Kennedy: Hello distant cousin Margaret's older sister, Elizabeth Carroll married John Cunningham. He died in 1871 and then she married my great great grandfather William Kennedy. With her three children from John, she bore 3 more with William Kennedy with only one surviving. Mary Ann Carroll was one of the witnesses to that marriage. William Kennedy died in 1882 and Elizabeth married Michael Britt, had one child before she died in 1887. Her son Michael Kennedy married Mary Ann (Carroll) McGrath's adopted daughter Theresa McGrath and had four children with one dying within the first year, three surviving. They married and had issue. Michael Britt remarried and moved to Boston, USA, where he died. Young Patrick married had one daughter before his passing. Above you can see Al Lewis is copied, he is a blood cousin in genealogy. We help each other when we can. He is a Sens fan. Joy Carroll is also a cousin. She is also a Sens fan. We bet to the death because I support the Toronto Maple Leafs. Joy married Clay Carroll and she is a cousin to you also. Below is an obituary for Mary Ann Carroll from the Ottawa Citizen that I transcribed. OTTAWA CITIZEN - March 18, 1936 Mrs. Michael McGrath Members of St. Patrick's parish and friends attended the funeral this morning of Mrs. McGrath, widow of Michael McGrath, and well known in Corkery, Ontario, and Cantley, Quebec before coming to Ottawa ten years ago. The cortege proceeded from the home of her nephew and foster daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Michael Kennedy, 100 Lorne Avenue, to St. Patrick's church. Requiem high mass was chanted by Rev'd Father John Burke, and the body was placed in Notre Dame Cemetery vault, pending interment in Corkery (St. Michael's Church) in the spring. Surviving her besides her nephew and foster daughter are a sister Mrs. Jennie Laverty, New Richmond, Wisconsin; a niece Mrs. Thomas Carroll, and a nephew Roy Carroll, both of Ottawa. Numerous floral and spiritual offerings were received. I will put you in touch with my Boston contact as I am sure she would be delighted to hear from a fellow American who has Canadian roots as she does. She thought her grandfather Patrick Britt was adopted until she met me. I do have pictures also and data. Take care for now ... Taylor Kennedy
October 8, 2010: Daughter of Patrick Carroll and Jane O'Leary born in Huntley July 24, 1836, baptized December 19, 1836 in Richmond, Ontario, Canada. Godparents were James Leary and Margaret Leary The 1841 census shows Patrick in Huntley with 4 children under five. It appears he came with Peter Robinson settlers and his brother Michael and father Thomas arrived after the 1841 census and before 1851 census. Thomas Carroll who married Sarah Kennedy, is son of Pat Carroll and Marg Brennan, son of Thomas Carroll and Sara Corcoran.....no relation to Huntley Carrolls. William Carroll, brother to Patrick who never married is son of Thomas Carroll and Catherine Hinds.... no relation to the Huntley Carrolls. Will forward the particulars of the 1841 census later. Have to go to work now. ... Taylor _______________________________ Al and Sandee: According to the 1841 census, Patrick was in Canada for 8 years which would make 1833. I checked some ships from Ireland and found Thomas, Michael, Mary Ann, Biddy coming to Quebec in 1849 but it's a BIG country, who knows. The Huntley Carroll's were from Cobh, Cork, Ireland. That is according to Ogilvie whose best friends while he was growing up were Emmett and Gerald Carroll. I also saw two familiar names. They were William McFetridge age 24, Protestant, from Townlands of Collins and Robert McFetridge, age 26 from Townlands of Ballyriskmore. They were listed as emigrants from Aghadowey in 1833 heading for Philadelphia. ... Taylor ______________________________ Hello, First, as far as the McFetridge's. I have the following on them: Taken from "History of the St. Croix Valley", published in 1909 James McFetridge was born in Ireland, April 15, 1849. His father, James, married to Mary McBresnahan, moved to Pennsylvania, USA, in 1850 and worked in a lumber and sawmill for three years. He received three more years experience in the same line at St. Joseph, St. Croix County, Wisconsin, and then bought a farm in Somerset, in the same county. This he occupied ten years until the time of his death. James, Jr., received a common school education and then took up farming. After thoroughly mastering all the details of farm life he decided to venture into the business for himself. Accordingly, in 1883, he bought a farm of 240 acres. To this he speedily added forty more, making in all 280 acres in the town of Richmond. Mr. McFetridge was married to Margaret Carroll, of Canada, who proved a thrifty and devoted companion. Four children have blessed this union. James Roy, a Richmond farmer, married Lucy Foreman. Elizabeth was graduated from the New Richmond, Wis., High school and is now a teacher herself. Daniel and William work at home on the farm. Mr. McFetridge is a staunch Republican and attends the Episcopal Church. For fifteen years he has been a member of the school board. Of this body he is one of the progressive members, and his vote and his voice are always for the best interests of the educational advancement of the town. He is a worthy example of those men, who coming from the old country in the early days, devoted their brains and their strength to the upbuilding and development of this fertile valley. ... Sandee (more to come ... Al) __________________________________________ October 10, 2010: Thanks to Taylor Kennedy who has done a ton of meticulous research here ... Al Dear Sandee, Joy and Al: The many days of researching in the past, I came to a conclusion that Michael Carroll and Patrick Carroll were brothers, as they lived beside each other in Huntley and their father was Thomas Carroll who was born in 1780. I finally discovered Elizabeth Carrol's parents by the marriage of her sister Mary Ann to Michael McGrath. Last night Sandee asked me if I knew Michael and Patrick were brothers, which I had already concluded but the question posed did create doubts in my research. Upon many hours during work of deliberation and final research this afternoon, I can conclude without a doubt, Patrick and Michael Carroll were brothers. Firstly, Elizabeth Carroll (Cunningham)(Kennedy)(Britt) died on August 11, 1887 and she knew she had to make a Last Will and Testament. Her mother passed away in 1860 and her father before the 1871 census. Her sister Mary Ann was married, brother Daniel was somewhere but she needed to elect somebody who would see things through so she nominated her Uncle Patrick Carroll from Huntley as executor of her Will as it was signed on the 2nd day of August, 1887 nine days before her passing. The following is her Last Will and Testament Document #1 ; Unto the Surrogate Court of the County of Carleton The Petition of Patrick Carroll of the Township of Huntley in the County Of Carleton - Yeoman Humbly Sheweth that Elizabeth Britt late of the Township of Nepean in the County of Carleton (Wife of Michael Britt) deceased, died on or about the Eleventh day of August in the Year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eighty Seven at the Township of Nepean in the County of Carleton and that the said deceased at the time of her death had her fixed place and abode at the Township of Nepean in the said County of Carleton. That the said deceased in her lifetime duly made her last Will and Testament bearing the date the Second of August in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eighty Seven. That your petitioner is the sole executor named in the said Will. That the value of the personal estate and effects of the said deceased which she in anyway died possessed of or entitled to, and for and in respect to which a Probate of the said Will is to be granted are of or about the value of Four Hundred and Eighty dollars, to the best of your petitioners knowledge and belief. Therefore your petitioner prays that Probate of the said Will of the said deceased may be granted to him by this Honorable Court. Dated the 27th of August A.D.1887 signed by Patrick Caroll. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of ELIZABETH CARROLL This is the last Will and Testament of me Elizabeth Britt of the Township of Nepean in the County of Carleton wife of Michael Britt of the same place. I hereby revoke all and every Will or Codicil by me heretofore made. I give and bequeath unto Patrick Carroll of the Township of Huntley in the said County of Carleton, Yeoman, when I now nominate and appoint the sole executor of this my Last Will as such execute all my estate of whatsoever kind in trust to dispose of as follows; that is to say I give unto my said husband Michael Britt my black mare Nellie and my young one year old female colt, two cows with the power of selecting same, out land roller plough and my buggy and also a third of all crop raised upon my farm this year including hay. To pay to my brother Daniel Carroll the sum of two hundred dollars in full of all claims against my estate. To give to my daughters Elizabeth Carroll, Margaret Jane Cunningham and Annie Cunningham one feather bed with bed clothing and bed linen. To give unto my children Michael Kennedy, Theresa Kennedy and Patrick Britt the rest and residue of my estate. I hereby nominate and appoint Thomas Kennedy my stepson Guardian of my said son Michael Kennedy to have the custody and control of his person until he reaches the age of twenty-one years. And I hereby nominate and appoint my daughter Elizabeth Carroll Guardian of my daughter Mary Theresa Kennedy who is to have the custody and control of my said daughter Mary Theresa Kennedy until she reaches the age of twenty-one years. I also direct my said executor in the event of their death of any of my said children Michael Kennedy, Mary Theresa Kennedy of Patrick Britt to give the survivors or survivor the whole of such residue as aforesaid to the survivors or survivor. In witness whereof I have set my hand in the Township of Nepean aforesaid this second day of August in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty seven. Signed declared and published by the said Testatrix Elizabeth Britt as and for her Last Will and Testament in the presence of us both and in the presence of each other both being present at the same time and in the presence of the Testatrix at her request have subscribed our names as witnesses. Elizabeth marked with an "X", Mary Ann Carroll of Montreal signed and William Mosgrin of Ottawa. But this does not conclude that the relationship existed between Michael Carroll and Patrick Carroll. Through my census search and cross reference today, including a special marriage, I searched for what happened to the children of Patrick Carroll does. The church registers are very slim, but I do know Ann O'Leary was the daughter to Daniel O'Leary and Elizabeth ??. It was a marriage I came across for daughter Catherine O'Leary the stated Elizabeth's surname as Fockner (Faulkner). Believe it or not, Patrick's son Thomas Carroll married Mary Rowan and assumed the farm of Michael, 400 acres beside Patrick Carrolls 400 acres next door to John Kennedy. Patrick is listed as Concession 8, Lot 9. In the 1841 census it states his Concession # is also 8. Daniel O'Leary Jr. assumed his fathers farm in Concession 10, lot #2. So I asked myself what happened to Patrick's children in the 1881 census. A couple remained while the majority moved to St. Croix, Wisconsin, even Michael Carroll and Ann O'Leary's daughter Margaret who is living with her COUSINS, Patrick Carroll and James Carroll. That seals the deal. Michael Carroll and Patrick Carroll are brothers. The marriage of Terrence Carroll, son of Patrick Carrol and Jane O'Leary to Mary Okeefe, daughter of David O'Keefe and Sara Cavanagh on November 11, 1890 in Lanark (North Huntley), they are also found in St.Croix, Wisconsin in the 1900 census. Terrence died but Mary his wife, three children and her father David, a widow are living there. Patrick Carroll Jr married in Wis., John Carroll also married in Wis., James married in Wis., and Mary Jane is living as a domestic with the Johnston family, more than likely from the Huntley Johnstons. So Sandee, it appears you have more researching in Wisconsin for marriages, births and deaths of the Carroll's. I am attaching the following census and line numbers for you viewing. James Carroll line 46 part 1 James Carroll line 1 part 2 and brother Patrick line 2 and Cousin Margaret line 3 John Carroll line 38 Kate Carroll line 40 Terrence Carrolls widow, Mary (O'Keefe) Carroll lines 42 - 46 Take care for now ... New February 19, 2011: Hello Taylor and Allan, My only sister past away on Oct 22, so I went home to Wisconsin for the service. While there I did some Carroll hunting. Here is what I found: James Carroll, son of Patrick Carroll and Jane O’Leary, moved to Wisconsin in 1866. In 1870 he married Hannah M. Chinnock, b – 6 Sept, 1852 Troy , St. Croix County, Wisconsin d- 1936 Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of James Chinnock ( b – 10 March 1810, Somerset County , England d- 23 Aug 1870 Troy , St. Croix County , Wisconsin ) and Harriet Owen (b – 28 May 1818, Gloucestershire , England d- 5 Feb 1903, Troy , St. Croix County, Wisconsin) James and Hannah had three sons, Arthur James b – 1872 Wisconsin d- 1928 Superior , Douglas County, Wisconsin. Arthur married Annie Hunter on March 30 1895 in Superior , Wisconsin . Annie was born in 1879, in Canada . They had 1 son and 7 daughters: Lawrence James b 4 July 1895, Superior , WI d Feb 1978 San Ysidro, San Diego , California , Gladys I. born 2 Jan, 1898 Superior, WI, Hattie b 1900, Olive b 1902, Lila b 1904, Margaret b 1910, Gweneth b 1912, and the 7th daughter Virginia b 1915, all the children were born at Superior, Wisconsin. This would have been after Arthur’s death. James and Hannah’s second son was Edward Thomas b 9 Dec 1874 New Richmond, WI d 1924 Superior , WI . I have not as yet, found any more information on Edward. Clarence, was the name of James and Hannah’s third son, b 10 May 1875 New Richmond, WI d 1924 Superior , Wisconsin . Clarence was married on June 27, 1900 in Superior , to Elsie Erhart. Elsie b 1875 d 1932 both in Superior , WI . They had one son, James Clarence b 1910 d 1970 Superior , Wisconsin . Patrick Carroll and Jane (O’Leary) son Patrick H. came to the USA in 1875. The 1880 census shows him living with his brother James and wife Hannah in New Richmond, WI, along with their cousin Margaret Carroll (daughter of Michael Carroll and my great grandmother). Patrick H. married Mary Manley on Nov 8, 1882 in St. Croix County , WI . Mary, b 1863 in WI and d 1945 in Hudson , St. Croix , WI . Patrick passed away April 23, 1923 in Ramsey County , Minnesota , but was living in Hudson , WI at the time of his death. Ramsey / Ramsay? county is where St. Paul , MN is located and where the big hospitals in the area are, I’m guessing he was in a hospital there when he died. Patrick joined the Hudson , WI police force and by 1894 when his son Samuel was born, he was the Chief of Police. So I have a lot more digging to do on Patrick, the next time I get home, I’m sure I’ll be able to find a lot of information. Patrick and Mary had two children, a daughter, Agnes June, b 1884 WI d 1955 WI. Agnes was married to a Hawkins (? Have not found first name as yet). They had two children: Hugh C. born 1915 and Dr. Marion Elizabeth Hawkins, b 27 Dec 1916 Wisconsin d 22 Aug 1993, Ramsey County , Minnesota . She never married and at the age of 70, in 1986 she was living in St. Paul , MN . She was a teacher, an author, and traveled giving lectures. Google her name, or go to http://www.uwrf.edu/Awards/Hawkins1972.cfm to learn more about her. Samuel Leonard b Jan, 8 1894 at Hudson , WI d June 2 1974 Saint Louis, Minnesota . Samuel’s wife’s name was Carmen ? b b 1894 in WI. Died ? They had four children: John (Jack) Leonard b 1916 d 3 April 1995 Eau Claire , Wisconsin . I have pictures of some of the headstones, Patrick's, Mary's an.d Marion E. Hawkins. I got them to load to a copy of this email that I sent to Taylor, but the computer they are on isn't working right now. The internet is down. I'll send you the pictures as soon as I get it back up. Just have to unplug my router and wait for a bit. More of the Wisconsin Carroll's to follow in another email. Sandee McFetridge ________________________________ Carroll Grave Markers in Wisconsin, USA Sandra Very sorry about your sister. You mentioned doing some Carroll hunting, then you provided tombstone markers. Are you that good of a shot? Just kidding. It is amazing the information that is out there, that in time will get lost, and be forgotten. That is why I am so big on pictures, information, stories just to keep the ancestors and roots alive. Have you ever thought that once you compile the data about writing a book? Thank you so much for keeping me in the loop. Take care for now Taylor Kennedy Canada
