Thomas Petepiece and Catharine Stokes were married in Ireland and had at least three
children before emigrating from Ireland. According to descendants, their son Joseph
was born in 1828 in a log cabin near Merrickville, Ont. We believe that he was a
brother of William married to Susan Morrison, Jonas married to
Ann Ferguson and Richard married to Ann Ferguson, but we have not been able
to find the name of the parents. There are many spellings of the surname, even on the
tombstones in the same family, Petapiece, Petepiece, Pettapiece, Pettepiece and Pettipiece.
Thomas and Catherine's family lived on Lot 2, Conc. A, Broken Front, in Oxford Township,
several of their children and grandchildren died of consumption. After Catherine died
in 1864, Thomas went to live with his son and daughter-in-law, Alexander and Mary.
He died on April 24, 1872 at 83 years of age.
