Hi Al,
I noticed that your post looking for information on some of the old families of the
Maniwaki, Gracefield Kazabazua area, was from quite a while ago. Are you still looking
for information on them? If so my mother was one of the Plunketts from Farellton,
and my great grandmother was a McCaffery from either Low or Venosta
(I'd have to ask my grandmother). What sort of information are you looking for?
Anyway I'm not far from Farellton or Low so I could look anything up if need be.

Hi Abe:

Thanks very much for your e-mail regarding the PLUNKETT and McCAFFERY families and
your offer to look up information.

I'm mainly interested in folks who settled in the area in the 1800's, and if possible,
where they came from. Anything you can send along on the PLUNKETT or McCAFFERY pioneers
(or other ancestors) would be appreciated.

Thanks again!
... Al Lewis

Well, I'd have to look up information on the McCafferys but the Plunkett's came over in
the early 1800s the (1820s or 30s) Did you want specific genealogical information, or
just an overview? Anyway the first Plunkett to come over was
Michael Plunkett who was a wheelwright from County Louth. He came over to work on
the Rideau Canal. He settled in Farrelton on what is now Plunkett Road. The church
the Plunkett's have been members of since it was built is the Farellton church,
they helped build it in fact. I'm also connected by blood to the
McCambley family from Venosta, the Hendrick, the Haveron, the Muldoon, the Hogan, and the O'Connor
families from this area. I don't know much about them, but I could ask my grandmother
(a McCambley) The McCaffreys were here a little later than the Plunketts I think maybe
the late 19th century.

Hi there,
I was just surfing on the net and I came across a note from Abe-Plunkett-Latimer
that his/her grandmother was a McCaffery from Low or Venosta. My grandmother was
Jane McCaffery from that area as well. I wonder is there some connection.
She married Phil Covey /Colby from that area somewhere, I believe he was born in
Northern Ireland. I am searching for his father Mathew Covey (Colby) Do you have
any info on this.

April 13, 2004: My g- grandmother Jane McCaffery was born in 1848, daughter of James McCaffery and Margaret Ann McCauley from Ireland. I see your grandmother was also Jane McCaffery but she was the neice of my grandmother---Jane McCaffery, and the daughter of William McCaffery brother to my grandmother Jane McCAffrey. I have all of Jane's and William's brother's and sister's if you would like them. They were both from the Low - Venosta area I guess and I thought they were the same person at first. Any info you may have on James McCaffrey and Margaret McCauley would be appreciated. Regards Barbara Hawes
September 14, 2004: Hi Al. I was going over your site, I consult it a couple of times a week. I spotted your interests in the Plunketts. There are two families that I have just key entered. One on the Quebec side who seem to by predominantly RC and one on the Ontario side (James PLUNKETT and Catherine COSTIGAN) who are predominantly Protestant. They don't think that they are connected but they could be so I am told. I have both of them roughed in and they are included here. ... October 21, 2004: I was reviewing the bytown website and came across the profile of Michael Plunkett. I have a bit of information for you relating to James Plunkett and Annie O'Callaghan. As an O'Callaghan I have some information on Annie's marriage and where they are buried. Annie and James were married in St. John the Evangelist Parish in Osgoode on May 29, 1894. They are both buried in St. Bridgid's Cemetery (River Road) in Osgoode. James's Parents where Thomas Plunkett and Ann Brady. Hope this helps. Maureen O'Callaghan _____________ Hi All: Thank you Maureen O'Callaghan for the information that I have now included. In your email you say that James's parents were Thomas Plunkett and Ann Brady. I had Ann Bray. Would you please confirm that it should be Ann Brady. Thanks again. It is great when people spot errors. That is the way it will all come together. ... Robert Sample _____________ Yes the name I have is Brady. I got this information from the Parish register at St.John's. It was in the wedding announcement for James and Annie. ... Maureen
June 2, 2010: Hello Al Whilst searching the net, I came across your very interesting site and saw information on Michael Plunkett & his wife Bridget O’Reilly. Their daughter Mary Plunkett married Patrick Mason – I am related to Patrick (my grandmother’s grandfather Edward Mason was Patrick’s brother.) Patrick hailed from the town-land of Ballyplunt, near Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland (I live in the Downpatrick area.) He is first recorded in the 1852 Census of Canada East & West, in Masham township, Ottawa County, Quebec, aged 22, a Roman Catholic and working as a Miller. I have been told that he eventually owned a saloon, made good and amassed a goodly sum of money with which he bought a farm in Low, Ottawa County, Quebec of 400 acres, of rich land and a forest. In 1856, he married Mary Plunkett in the town of La-Peche / Lapeche, Quebec and had at least seven children : Patrick Mason - (b. 1858) I have no real information regarding him, bar a few appearances on Census Records, but ‘Robert Sample’, one of your contributors stated that he left home the day after his father’s funeral and was never heard of again. Bridget Margaret Mason - (b.@1863) In 1897, in the township of Low, Quebec, Bridget married Michael O’Leary. Bridget & Michael lived in Low & had at least one daughter :- * Mary Jane (b.29th Sept 1898), who in turn married Andy Mulvena and had five children. Bridget M. O’Leary is listed in “Ontario Deaths (1869-1947)” birth 1864 Quebec, father Patrick Rasson (obviously a spelling mistake) & mother Mary Plunkett died 5th February 1913, Ottawa, Carleton, Ontario. Catherine Anne Mason - (b.@1864) may have married James Edmund McCaffrey. Mary Teresa Mason - (b. c. 1865) ‘Robert Sample’, had recorded a Theresa b.1870 who died as an infant in 1872 – perhaps this is the same person! John Andrew Mason - (b.@1868) John inherited his father’s farm land in Low & his mother Mary lived with him until her death. In 1895, in the township of Low, Quebec, John married Edith Amanda Smith and had a family of at least ten:- * Victor Mason (b.@1896) * Norman Mason (b.@1897) * Henry A. Mason (b.@1899) * Mary Anne Mason (b.@1900) * Edith Gertrude Mason (b.@1903) * Oliver Michael Mason (b.@1905) * James Rufus Mason (b.@1908) * Matilda Mason (b.@1910) d. young * Lillian Mason (b.@1912) * Charles Ralph Mason (b.@1914) Sometime between 1911 and 1916, John decided to move 'West'. He sold the family farm in Low, Quebec and moved his whole family. He bought a farm in the newly formed Kindersley township, in the province of Saskatchewan, 154 miles south west of Saskatoon. Michael Mason - (b.@1872) I have been told he joined the Police Force in Quebec – but I have no other information Henry Mason - (b.@1875) Henry also joined the Police Force in Quebec. Henry was married and had three of a family:- * Henry Mason (b.?) * Mary Mason (b.?) m. Hill * Norah Mason (b.?) m. Arosan As you can see the information that I have is quite sketchy, but I would love to make contact with anyone who has any family connections, especially if they can help me with my research. Your sincerely Orla Higgins
June 6, 2011: Hi! My name is Nancy Knull. I live in a small farming hamlet near Grande Prairie, Alberta. I am related to the Plunketts of Farrelton, Quebec through my Grandmother--Celestine Prouse whom died a few years ago in Ottawa. I have often been to Farrelton as a child to the family farm on the East side of the Gatineau River. Connor Plunkett just died this past March and now the family farm passes to his sister--Carmel Plunkett...the last of the 5 children of Arthur Plunkett and Catherine O'Connor. I have been reading with much interest this detailed geneology. I can be contacted at the following email address: nknull@telus.net _________________________________ also posted on June 6, 2011, a reply from Bruce Cowen: Nancy, your grandmother Celestine (Plunkett) Prouse is my "2nd cousin once removed". Our common ancestor is John Cuddihey - Margaret O'Neill. Below is an ancestry page for your grandmother.

Questions : - do you know whom the parents are of your ggrandmother Katherine (O'Connor) Plunkett ? I have many O'Connor's in my tree but have not connected them to Katherine. - it is a long shot, but do you have further information on Margaret O'Neill ? I wonder if she has any connection to the other O'Neill who also resided in the Gatineau. ... Bruce Cowen
New July 12, 2011: My mother was Veronica (called Monica) McCaffrey. Her father was James McCaffrey of Venosta. James was the only boy of William McCaffrey. James had 10 sisters though. William was born in Ireland and died at Martindale, Quebec, in 1890. James McCaffrey was born in 1880 and died in 1952 in my home on Somerset St. Ottawa. I was only two when he died. I would love to learn more about the McCaffreys. I don’t know the names of James’ sisters, although I remember my mother talking about Maggie, Jane and a Willamena I think and one of the sisters was blind. There were 10 sisters and I would love to have their names. I know some were married to Bloom, O’Rourke, O'Halloran. My grandfather married Margaret McCambley who died around 1937 I believe. Both my grandparents are buried in the graveyard at St. Martin’s church in Martindale. Look forward to hearing from any of you. Robert (Bob) Willbond Ottawa _____________ Thanks to Bruce Cowen for answering Bob's question: Below is an ancestry tree for your mother. and a nice photograph from Bob: Hi Bruce, Wow! Thank you very much, that’s great. I’ve attached a photo I took at a wedding some years ago of my mother’s brothers and sisters. They are all gone now. Ethel, Isabel and Teresa are not in the photo as Ethel, the eldest died in the 60s, Teresa as an infant and Isobel was in a home at the time.
McCaffrey Brothers and Sisters
Would you have the 10 sisters names of my grandfather James William McCaffrey? He was the only son of William James McCaffrey. I will add my family (brothers and sisters) to my mother’s chart you sent. My father was born in Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland Feb 27 1916 and died Ottawa Nov. 1 1996. Monica my mother died Dec 23, 1993 in Ottawa and both parents are buried in the Catholic graveyard in Lanark, Ontario. Bob Willbond __________________ Note: Within the past day or so, we've heard from many of the McCaffrey descendants, through Bob Willbond. This current web page started out as a page dedicated to the Michael Plunkett family from County Louth. Many of these families moved to and intermarried with my ancestors and their neighbours on the Manotick Station Road in Osgoode Township. Some of the common names are Plunkett, Lawrence Burns, James Burns, Hogan, O'Brien and possibly the O'Connor and O'Rourke families. I'll start a new web page today for the McCaffrey family and will add quite a bit of material received today, including some great stories. Thanks to all who are contributing their stories. ... Al
