July 16, 2008: Hello Mrs. Gordon, I've been doing some research on the families who received assistance to emigrate from the Fitzwilliam estate in County Wicklow, and I think you have it right. The following is the emigration record for the Robert Prestley family, as well as the 1851 census page for Robert Prestley of Goulbourn, which seems to fit. It includes Robert, b. Ire., "Preseley"/Priscilla (Stanzell) his second wife I believe, b. Can.; children Joseph, Henry, and William, all b. Ire.; and then perhaps the last two were Priscilla's children - Susan and Sarah, b. Can. (I have heard that it was a tradition for a second wife to name her first daughter after the first wife, which I thought might be a hard chore for some.) Fitzwilliam Tenants - Family Group ID: 888 Parish County Wexford Year Listed: 1847 Surname Prestley Reference No. 7 Group Members: Robert 32, Susan 34, Joseph 10, Henry 7, William 4, Rachel 2, Sister Henrietta 28. Voyage Townland As spelt in the Emigration Motybower Official Motabower Other Information Holding Cabin and kitchen garden on Robert Prestley Snr's holding, a head tenant. House to come down. Source: Companion CD to book Surplus People by Jim Rees. Two Prestley sons seem to have settled on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. There's a Henry Presley in Pontiac district, QC (Alleyn and Cawood) in 1901 who could be the son of Robert: the record states that he arrived in 1847. The marriage record for Joseph Presley in 1861 (from ancestry.ca) shows that it took place in Renfrew County, but I believe he is the Joseph Pressley in Wright district, QC (Sicotte, Lytton and Baskatong) in the 1901 census. He arrived in 1846, according to the census page. The record for William is a bit more sketchy. Here's his marriage record (Ont. marriage registration), which shows his birthplace as Goulbourn, and his parents as Robert and Mary: Vol 6, p 42 (Carleton Co): William PRESLEY, 23, mechanic, Goulbourn, Ashton, s/o Robert & Mary PRESLEY married Catherine WHITE, 18, Nepean, same, d/o William & Sarah WHITE. Witness: Malcolm DRUMMOND of Goulbourn. March 14, 1870 at Richmond. His 1901 Goulbourn census page, however, shows his birthplace as Ireland; no date of arrival is given, but the age on this record would fit Robert Prestley's son, William.

I hope this is helpful. ... Anne Burgess
February 12, 2009: Hi Al, I was looking at your page on Holy Trinity Cemetery today, and noticed Henry Presley/Prestley. I believe he'd be the above Henry Prestley. May 11, 2009: Hello Mr. Lewis and Anne Burgess, Would it be possible to correct your website concerning the descendants of Robert Prestley and Susan Tapley. Their daughter, Rachel Prestley did not die enroute to Canada. She was born February 25 1845, Ireland and died January 23 1931 near Barrie, Ontario. Her father's and mother's names appear on her death certificate and on her marriage certificate (incorrectly recorded as Rebecca Prestley and James Davison). She married a James Davidson, born Feb 4 1840, in Ashton, Goulbourn Township, Ontario, son of John Davidson and Elizabeth Gray. Mrs. Edie Sage was correct in her original research, in that Rachel does not appear in the 1851 Census. She assumed that Rachel had died on the voyage over. All trace of her disappears until her marriage certificate shows up, and the birth and death certificates of her children, who were born in Ashton, appear with her name on them. I was corresponding with a Mr. Sample about 2 years ago. He agreed with me that I had sufficiently proved my case for Rachel Prestley / Presley's existence. I look forward to hearing from you, Yours truly, ... Pamela Sanders
Death Certificate for Rachel Prestley Davidson

New March 13, 2013: I have found on line a letter dated May 1, 2009 written to Mr. Lewis and Anne Burgess from Pamela Sanders. I am doing research on the famiy of James Frederick Presley (son of William Presley) who was the son of Robert Prestley. I was wondering if through your research you had any further information. James Frederick Presley was my husbands grandfather My husband Paul and I were wondering if Pamela Sanders is related to the Presley family Pat Presley __________________ Note: The e-mail address for Pamela Sanders is no longer valid. According to Mr. Sample's database, James Frederick Presley married Gabella May Drummond on August 08, 1900, in the Presbyterian Church in Ashton. ... Al
