John RAE and Margaret O'NEIL
from County Mayo, Ireland to Mayo, Quebec, Canada
November 30, 2004:
Hi Carol,
I read your message about Mayo pioneers on the Bytown website with
great interest. My ggg-grandparents, John Rae and Margaret O'Neil,
both died in 1893 and are buried in the cemetery at Mayo, Quebec. I first
travelled to Mayo in the 1980s and was unable to find their gravestone
at that time. A few years later I learned that their flat stone had
sunk into the ground. Another Rae descendant had the stone repaired
and placed on a concrete base and I was easily able to find it on
another trip to Mayo two years ago. The stone confirmed that the
family was from County Mayo, but I've not been able to find any more
details of their origins in Ireland. I've been reading early editions
of the Buckingham Post, and my next task is to search for the
obituaries of John and Margaret in the Ottawa newspaper and the
obituary of their son Michael who died in Masson in 1915 (there are no
helpful details in their burial records, unfortunately). The family
lived in Mulgrave township from the time of their immigration, but
I've not yet been able to find the marriage record of Michael Rae to
Philomene Laplante. I'm hoping to find it and to find that the priest
listed Michael's parish in Ireland. If you can suggest any other
sources that might be helpful in my Rae / O'Neil research, I would
appreciate that very much. And if you'd like any details of my
research for your Mayo database, I'd be happy to share that.
Regards,
Lynn
December 28, 2004:
Hi Al,
Well, it's finally complete, or as complete as a work in progress can
be, and attached as an rtf file. Luckily I've been able to include all
those individuals necessary to complete the family groups, with the most
recent birth listed being in 1899. Thanks very much for adding this page to your
website - with any luck I'll find "cousins" who can add to or correct my
info, but it also seems like a small memorial to my Irish ancestors.
Margaret Rae, born 1885 and married to Leandre Sabourin, is my
great-grandmother and I remember her very well and very fondly.
Let me know if you feel anything needs to be changed or edited. Thanks
again, and all the best for the New Year.
Regards,
Lyn
Family of John RAE and Margaret (Peggy) O'NEIL
of Mayo, Quebec
John RAE was born about 1815 in Ireland. He died on 25 July 1893, aged 78
years, and was buried on 27 July 1893 in Mayo, Papineau County, Quebec (1).
Census records for Quebec show John living in Lochaber in 1861, in Mulgrave
in 1871, and in Mulgrave & Derry in 1881 and 1891. There is conflicting
family information regarding John's county of origin in Ireland, but his
tombstone identifies him as a native of County Mayo. The stone
appears to have been laid near the time of burial, and the information it
contains was likely provided by John and Margaret's children. According
to family information, John was a sheep farmer from the northern part of
Ireland; both Connaught and County Mayo were cited in family information.
The other possible county of origin, as identified by different family
sources, is County Clare. It is possible that John immigrated with his
eldest son, Michael, in the late 1850s and was joined by the rest of the
family the following year. This information, also from family sources, has
not been confirmed.
John married Margaret O'NEIL about 1841 in Ireland. Margaret was born
about 1817 in Ireland. She died on 19 July 1893, aged 76 years, and was
buried on 21 July 1893 in Mayo, Quebec (1). Margaret shares her husband
John's tombstone, and she is also identified as a native of County Mayo,
Ireland. The stone was repaired in 1990, but is not completely legible
and seems to list Margaret's death date as 30 June 1893. Margaret may have
been related to the Irish actress, Peggy O'Neil, though this family information
has not been confirmed.
John and Margaret had the following children:
1. Mary RAE. Mary was born on 20 August 1843 in Ireland (2).
Census records for 1871, 1881 and 1891 list her birthplace as Ireland;
the 1901 census states she was born in rural Quebec. She married Peter
KANE (Peter KANE & Francis) on 10 Sept. 1878 at Thurso (3). Peter was
the widower of Anne MURPHY (3). The Buckingham Post of 4 Aug. 1904
mentions the death of "an old resident of Mulgrave", Mrs. Peter Kane.
The 27 April 1906 edition reports the upcoming wedding of Peter Kane and
Mary McDonell, and notes that "this will be the third time for Mr. Kane
to go through the mill".
Peter and Mary Rae had the following child:
i) Margaret Anny KANE was born on 30 Sept. 1879 and was baptised on 30 Oct.
1879 in Thurso (3).
Peter and Anne Murphy had the following children:
i) Mary Jane Kane was born on 4 Jan. 1872 and was baptised on 28 Jan. 1872 in Thurso (3).
ii) Francis Kane was born on 6 June 1873 and was baptised on 15 June 1873 in Thurso (3).
iii) Catherine Kane was born on 24 Feb. 1875 and was baptised on 21
March 1875 in Thurso (3). She married William McAndrew on 12 July 1899
in Mayo (4).
iv) Patrick Thomas Kane was born on 24 Feb. 1877 and was baptised on 1 April
1877 in Thurso (3).
2. Michael John RAE was born on 20 Nov. 1844 in Ireland (2). He died on
17 Oct. 1915, aged 71 years, and was buried on 19 Oct. 1915 in Masson (5).
The 1901 census gives his year of immigration as 1857. According to the
Buckingham Post of 27 April 1906, Michael sold his property at Inlet to
Paul Milke and moved to Jarnac. Michael later moved to Masson and lived with
his daughter Mary Jane and her family until his death.
Michael married Philomene Rose LAPLANTE (Louis & Victoria FACETTE) about
1882. Philomene was born on 4 April 1860 and was
baptised on 11 April in Cumberland, Ontario. Philomene died in Mulgrave township about 1902 (6).
Michael and Philomene had the following children:
i) Margaret RAE was born on 25 June 1885 and was baptised on 8 July 1885 in
Thurso, Quebec (3). She died on 26 Nov. 1972 near Chalk River, Ontario and
was buried in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario (6).
Margaret married Leandre SABOURIN (Francois Amedee & Denise Falanise
LOUISEIZE) on 20 Nov. 1904 in Ripon, Quebec (7). Leandre was the widower
of Claudia Crispin (7). He was born on 7 Sept. 1877 and was baptised on 9 Sept.
1877 in Ripon, Quebec (7). He died on 7 Dec. 1951 in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario
and was buried there (6).
ii) Mary Jane RAE was born on 10 Nov. 1887 and was baptised on 24 Nov. 1887
in Thurso (3). She died in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario and is buried there (6).
Mary Jane married Mathias LACOMBE on 4 June 1904 in Mayo, Quebec (1). Mathias
died on 9 Dec. 1948, at the age of 67 years and 2 months, and was buried in
Sudbury, Ontario (6).
iii) Roseanne Victoria RAE was born on 17 Oct. 1889 and was baptised on
31 Oct. 1889 in Thurso, Quebec (3). She died in 1922 in Sturgeon Falls,
Ontario and was buried there (6).
Roseanne married Alfred MASSY on 26 Aug. 1907 in Ripon, Quebec (7).
Alfred died in 1922, probably in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario (6).
iv) Christina RAE was born on 19 Jul 1892 (2). She is listed as Ellen Ch. (?) Rae
in the 1901 census.
Christina married Willie CHAPMAN on 22 Nov. 1909 in Ripon, Quebec (7).
v) John Michael RAE was born on 8 Nov. 1893 and was baptised on 14 Nov.
1893 in Mayo, Quebec (4). He immigrated to Tupper Lake, NY, USA, about 1923 and
died in Niagara Falls, NY about 1950 (6).
John married Lucie CHARETTE on 7 Sept. 1914 in Masson, Quebec (5).
3. Patrick RAE was born on 2 Nov. 1853 in Ireland (2). He died on 15 Oct.
1910, aged 56 years, and was buried on 17 Oct. 1910 in Thurso, Quebec (3).
The 1901 census gives his year of immigration as 1856.
Patrick married Bridget MALONEY (Thomas & Sicily Maloney) on 29 Jan. 1885
in Thurso, Quebec (3). He married secondly to Catherine Theresa ROWAN
(Michael & Mary McDonald) on 12 July 1887 in Buckingham, Quebec (8).

4. Margaret RAE was baptised on 6 June 1858, at the age of 8 weeks,
in Buckingham, Quebec (9). According to the 1901 census for Labelle
County, Mulgrave & Derry, she was born on 30 Mar. 1859 in Quebec.
Margaret married Hensen Hans Christian (John) WORM (J. WORM and Maria WORM)
on 3 May 1898 in Mayo, Quebec (4). According to the 1901 census, John was
born on 8 June 1858 in Germany and was Lutheran. His marriage record in
the repertoire for Mayo states that he was from Denmark and was Protestant.
The 1901 census gives his year of immigration as 1887. John and Margaret's
descendants seem to use the surname Hansen.
John and Margaret had the following child:
i) John Edward Hansen WORM was born on 31 July 1899 and was baptised on
31 Jul 1899 in Mayo, Quebec (4). The 1901 census lists his birth date as
