John REDDICK and Sarah Jane JOY
to Marlborough Township, Ontario, Canada

December 25, 2009:

Hello, My name is Lynn Somerville. My grandfather on my maternal side was Martin Reddick of Marlborough Township, near

Burritts Rapids. About six months ago I found your site, by accident, with all your research and information, which led

me to start doing a Reddick family tree. I decided to finish it for Christmas presents for the family, but I seem to

be stuck. I am new on the computer, and your site said to e-mail to get permission to use your password to print and

copy your pages.

We have figured out that we go back to William of 1834 from Ireland. We know for sure our great grandfather was William

(Billy) Reddick and his wife was Sarah McGovern and his brother was John. We know from family tales that we are connected

to the Joy, and the Dell families. We have a family picture of them which we will attach. We cannot find the connection

between Williams son, William and the William that is our great grandfather. The years indicate that there is a missing

person that died in 1886. We would greatly appreciate any help that you could give us. e.g.. any sites to look up, any leads

you might have that would help us.

My family on both sides are old families from Carleton County, around Kemptville and Burritts Rapids. We are related to the

Somerville, Latimer, Dangerfield, Gagne and Pratt families.

Thank you very much. Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks to Sue for the following thorough detective work! ... Al This is what I've found so far through the censuses and Ontario BMDs - all is quite verifiable for names and places of birth: 1861 Marlborough, Carleton census (enumerated as "Redah" John, aged 27, born Ireland Mrs. Redah, 29, born USA Margaret Ann, 7, born Upper Canada (Ontario) William, 5, born Upper Canada (Ontario) _______________________________________________________________________________ 1871 Marlborough census (as 'Ridick") John, 37, born Ireland Sarah Jane, 35, born Ontario (this is wrong) Mary A., 15 born Ontario William, 14, born Ontario John A., 13, born Ontario Margaret T,. 7, born Ontario NOTE: In the above (1871) census, Sarah Jane is listed as being born in Canada. All other records say the USA (New York, in fact). I also think that the first daughter was Mary Ann, not Margaret Ann. ________________________________________________________________________________ 1881 Marlborough (as Riddick) 1881 Marlborough (McGovern family) William, 22, born Ontario Mary McGovern, widow, born Ontario, 54, Roman Catholic Mary A., 23 born Ontario Patrick, son, 27, born Ontario, Roman Catholic John, 20, born Ontario Sarah, daughter, 19, born Ontario, Roman Catholic ________________________________________________________________________________ At some point, presumably about 1885, William Reddick and Sarah McGovern married and they are in the 1891 Marlborough census as: William, 34, born Ontario of an Ireland-born father Sarah, 30, born Ontario of an Ireland-born father Mary, 5, born Ontario Robert, 3, born Ontario William J, 1, born Ontario NOTE: In above 1891 census, only husband William is Church of England, ALL others in household are Roman Catholic. ________________________________________________________________________________ 1901 Marlborough census William Reddick, born 9 Nov 1856 in Ontario Sarah, born 3 Aug 1862, Ontario Mary, 31 Jan 1886 Robert E., 30 Sep 1887 William J., 2 June 1889 NOTE: In above 1901 census, ALL are mistakenly listed as Church of England ________________________________________________________________________________ 1911 Marlborough census William, born Nov 1857 (different year given from previous census) Sarah, born Aug 1862 Martin, Aug 1891 Henry 15 Jan 1893 Ella, 19 Feb 1894 Evelyn 15 Apr 1904 NOTE: In above 1911 census, the 3 eldest children are no longer there. William is listed as Anglican and all others as Roman Catholic __________________________________________________________________________________ So, your Martin Reddick (1891) is a son of William Reddick(1857) and Sarah McGovern(1862). William is a son of John Reddick(abt 1834) and Sarah Jane Foy(abt 1836 or 1832, depending on which census you believe to be accurate). John Reddick was the immigrant, coming from Ireland to Ontario sometime before 1854 when his first child was born in Ontario. John Reddick died 21 Aug 1904 at age 72, of consumption (TB) which he had for 2 years. He lived on Concession 1 in Marlborough and the informant was son John A. Reddick. John's wife, Sarah Jane Foy Reddick died 24 Jan 1914. INformant was again son John A. who gave her birthplace as Pierrepont, New York and her parents as David Foy and Mary Watson. John And Sarah's son William was born 9 Nov 1857 in Marlborough according to his death registration and died at Burritts Rapids on 30 March 1933. His parents were also given as John Reddick of Ireland and Sarah J. Foy of Messina, New York. __________________________________________________________________________________ Martin Reddick married Evelyn Gagne who was born in Ottawa. This information comes from a death registration of a child they had named Mary Ann Reddick who was born in Ottawa 20 June 1923 and died the following month at Kemptville on 16 July 1923. __________________________________________________________________________________ Your genealogy for the Reddick family is Martin (William, John) Hope this helps, ...
