Patrick REDMOND and Ellen KEOUGH
also Martin REDMOND, probable brother to Patrick
Clonmore, County Wicklow, Ireland to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

January 14, 2009:

Hi Al,

Here are the details. I found this death record for Patrick Redmond from Co. Wicklow in
the Ont. death registrations:

10 Jan 1874
Death of Patrick Redmond, labourer
New Edinburgh
Born Co. Wicklow
Informant: Martin Redmond, New Edinburgh

According to the ND records, the witnesses were Matthew Kehoe and Edward Bambrick.

On Dec. 9, 1852, Patrick Redmond and his wife, Ellen Kehoe, had their son Martin baptized
in Clonmore Parish, Co. Wicklow. So they arrived here too late for the 1851 census. Is
there an 1861 census for Bytown?

(It's on microfilm at Library and Archives Canada but I don't know of a digitized version
... Al)

Notre Dame, Ottawa, Records:

11 Jan 1863
Baptism of Michael Redmond, s/o Patrick Redmond and Helen Keogh
Sponsors: Matthew Kehoe and Mary Howlett

There were probably other children born to the couple in the period 1852-1863, but I haven't found them yet.

Here's Michael Redmond in 1881:

Here is Martin:

Hi Al,

Here are the details on Martin Redmond, who came to New Edinburgh from Ballyconnell and
Liscolman on the Fitzwilliam Estate in Co. Wicklow.

ND Ottawa death records:

23 Nov 1880
Death of Martin Redmond, widower of Catherine McGanney(?), age 87 years.
Witnesses: Philip Brady and John Mellon.

Ont. Death Registration gives his death date as 21 Nov. 1880, and his age as 93. He
lived in New Edinburgh; informant was Mrs. Howlett.

I can't find Martin in the 1851 census, but he is listed in the 1871 census index:
age 77, b. Ire., a labourer, living in New Edinburgh.

From the Fitzwilliam rentals records, we know that Martin Redmond was living in
Ballyconnell in 1827; he was 34 and his wife was 32, and they had 2 sons and 3 daughters.
In 1839, Martin was 46, his wife had apparently died, and he had 2 sons and 2 daughters
with him.

With Marg T's help, I found these children born to Martin Redmond and Catherine
(her surname is variously reported as Mahon, Lennon, no record, and Donohoe):

Baptisms, Clonmore parish records, Co. Wicklow:

Ann: 27 Jan 1826; James:15 Apr 1821; Martin: 28 Feb 1833; Mary: 8 Sept 1823.

The only one of these children that I have found in Ottawa is Ann, who married Thomas
Howlett in ND Ottawa:

18 Jan 1865
Marriage of Ann Redmond, d/o Martin Redmond and Catherine Maher, to Thomas Howlett,
widower of Mary Keogh. Witnesses were Denis O'Brien and Ann Brennan.

I'm assuming that Martin Redmond was the brother of Patrick Redmond (m. Ellen Kehoe),
as both lived in New Edinburgh, and Martin was the informant for Patrick's death
registration.

January 20, 2010: Hi Al, This is for your page on Patrick Redmond m. Ellen Kehoe: http://www.bytown.net/redmondpatrickandmartin.htm. I see that Patrick was the son of Martin Redmond, not his father. Here's the couple in 1861: 1861 census: One Junction Gore, Gloucester Twp. Patrick Redmand, lab., b. Ire, RC, 35 Ellen Redmand, b. Ire, RC, 33 Martin Redmand, b. Ire, RC, 8 Margaret Redmand, b CW, RC, 5 Bartholomew Redmand, b CW, RC, 2 Patrick Redmond's wife, Ellen Kehoe, was a sister of Matthew Kehoe and Mary Kehoe. Matthew Kehoe, a carpenter, and his sister Mary, were living in Bytown in 1851, and they were sponsors for children of John Tompkins and Eliz. Traynor here in the 1840s. (see newspaper article below) Matthew married Roseanne Tracy, d/o Wm. Tracy and Rachel Dague; he appeared often as sponsor or witness in the St. Patrick's records, and his 7 children were baptized there. Mary Kehoe married Thomas Howlett: St. Patrick's 2 Nov. 1859 Thomas Howlett, 24, s/o Philip Howlett and Nancy Whalen, m. Mary Kehoe, 25, d/o Peter Kehoe and Margaret Byrne. Wit: Matthew Kehoe and James Carroll (who was from Ballynultagh) After Mary Kehoe Howlett's death, Thomas Howlett married Ann Redmond (sister of Patrick Redmond, above): ND Ottawa 8 Jan 1865 Marriage of Ann Redmond, d/o Martin Redmond and Catherine Maher to Thomas Howlett, widower of Mary Keogh Wit: Denis O'Brien and Ann Brennan Matthew Kehoe, Ellen Kehoe Redmond, and Mary Kehoe Howlett were likely cousins of those other Bytown Kehoes (Thomas Kehoe m. Catherine Kilroe, et al), as well as cousins of John Tompkins (whose mother was a Kehoe). They all came from Clonmore parish in Co. Wicklow, and both sets of Kehoes were godparents for the Tompkins children in Bytown. Peter Kehoe (father of Matthew, Mary and Ellen), was a carpenter living in Lascoleman/Liscolman, according to the 1839 Fitzwilliam Estate rentals records. Anne
New January 22, 2010: Matthew KEHOE There is a truly marvellous article on Matthew Kehoe, telling where he lived (squatted) at first and later; how he framed the steeple of the Basilica, worked on the doors of the Parliament Bldgs., etc. The article says he (one of the "Wooden" Kehoes) came with a brother (I'll have to find him) and sister in 1844. The "Iron Kehoes" referred to in the article (John, Thomas, and William) were the Kehoes I sent you the other day, and WE know they were from Ballynultagh, not Wexford. What an amazing find! ... Anne
The Ottawa Citizen article, February 12, 1927 The complete article is available in the Ottawa Citizen Archives. Matthew Kehoe, to Ottawa from County Wicklow in 1844 Matthew Kehoe, to Ottawa from County Wicklow in 1844
