John RYAN and Mary O'LEARY
Ireland to Allumette Island, Quebec, Canada
July 5, 2010:
Hi Jackie and Al,
I have Ryan and O'Leary ancestors on Allumette Island and I'm just starting to do my search.
The furthest I've gone back is Patrick Ryan (my gr. gr. grandfather 1840-ish -1907) is the
son of John Ryan and Mary O'Leary. Do you have any connection to this family or can you send
me in the right direction?
Thanks so much,
Kelly

Hi Al and Kelly: I've already replied to Kelly re our Ryan connection.
The info you have researched is correct, Al, but there are more records for this
family in St. Michael's at Corkery. James was baptized in Bytown as you have given,
and the youngest, Margaret was baptized, Allumette Island, 1856 and died 1867. The rest
were baptized at St. Michael's--Patrick, 1837; Martin, 1839; John Jr., 1841; Elizabeth,
1843; Mary Ann, 1845; Andrew, 1847; Bridgit, 1849; Samuel, b. 1851 and died before 1856.
John and Mary were both born in Ireland, so they were first generation when they moved
to Allumette.
Using the ages of John Ryan and Mary O'Leary, they don't seem to fit with any of the families
who came with the Peter Robinson settlers in 1823, that I can find--using
Carol Bennett's book as reference. However, I think there is a definite connection
with the O'Learys who came as P.R. Settlers.
John Ryan's name doesn't show up on the Allumette Assessment records until 1855. All the children
married on the Island and made their homes there. Martin was the only one to move out. In 1880
he went to California, USA.
There was a John Ryan & Emelia Asselin living on Calumet Island from about 1837. This John was
born in Quebec and the family was french speaking. They had a large family and some of
them moved up river to Allumette Island. This has caused much confusion among families who
are descended from both families. My line does not connect with them, but Kelly's line,
through the Spence family, does. Kelly and I are both descended from Patrick Ryan and
Margaret McGrath.
I have not been able to find the marriage of John Ryan and Mary O'Leary.
I've always enjoyed your website, so if you want to use this info, its OK with me. Jackie

Hello Al and Jackie!
Thanks for the additional information from both of you - clearly I have a lot to learn about
this type of research.
Al - yes, by all means, please post the info - I'm fine with it. If it weren't for your website,
I would not have found Jackie!
Thanks again,
Kelly
