June 3, 2003:

Thanks to Robert Sample for the following history of the Sample family of Goulbourn Township.
I have only included three generations here - e-mail Robert for later generations.

October 25, 2004: To Robert Sample I am wondering if you have any information on the following ancestor of mine. John Sample, born c 1805 Co Antrim Ireland married Barbara Campbell born 1807 in Glenelg, Scotland. I do not know when John Sample arrived in Canada, but his future wife arrived in 1815 with her family. John Sample and Barbara Campbell settled in Hawkesbury, Prescott Co., Ontario and raised four children. I am wondering if John Sample could be a brother of your William Sample b 1815 Thanks for any help Maureen _________________ From Robert Sample: Hi All: I just spoke to my brother Gordon who went to the Sample Farm in Ireland a couple of years ago and met with descendants of my g.g. Grandfather William who was married to an Unknown Smyth. William born 1815 could have had a brother John but my brother does not think so. I am providing what I have on the first and second generation as I have it on our ancestry in Ireland. My brother has been at this for a lot longer than I and would be please to speak with you about the Samples of Canada. There were a few families that he is aware of, some on the East Coast, some in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, a family in Franktown, Ontario area. His name is Gordon Sample and he would be pleased to speak with you. ... Robert Sample
April 28, 2005: Thanks Al, let her rip. here is the photo in question. The old fella sitting on the right is my g.granfather's brother James Sample whose ggg whatever son met up with my brother while he visited in Ireland. I think the photo was taken about circa 1880's and I have changed this earlier message to you accordingly. ... Robert

June 23, 2005: Hello all, I've been doing some volunteer transcribing for that Ont. Vital Statistics website, and was typing these marriage registrations this morning (Vol. 13, Lanark Co.): Thomas LEAVER, 23, laborer, Bathurst, Carleton Place, s/o Robert LEAVER and Rebecca CLOW, married Ann SAMPLE, 25, Hawsburgh (sic), Carleton Place, d/o John SAMPLE and Barbara CAMPBELL, witn: Hugh WALLACE and Jane Ann LEAVER, both of Carleton Place, 3 Jan 1871 at Carleton Place. Also in the same batch was this one for a daughter of William Sample, with an Ann Sample as witness: William SAMPLE, 20, laborer, Goulbourn, Goulbourn, s/o William SAMPLE and Martha McCULLOUGH, married Susan SWAIN, 21, Beckwith, Beckwith, d/o John SWAIN and Sarah MORRIS, witn: George McEWEN of Carleton Place and Ann SAMPLE of Goulbourn, 12 Jan 1871 at Carleton Place. And Robert, if you didn't already have it, here's another marriage from the William Sample family--taken from the OVS website: Vol 22 Pg 202 (Lanark Co) Robert SWAIN, 23, shoe maker, Beckwith, Drummond, s/o John SWAIN & Sarah MORRIS, married Matilda SAMPLE, 18, Ireland, Goulbourn, d/o McCullough & Matilda. Witn: Samuel T. CROMPTON, Beckwith, & Margaret McCROW, Goulbourn. Dec. 26, 1871 Carleton Place McCullough for the father's first name is obviously an error here. ... Anne Burgess E-mail: aboton@magma.ca ________________________ and from Robert Sample: Hi All: Thank you very much for the info Anne. There were actually four Sample families that we know of that came out from we believe Ireland to this area. There was one family, James Sample in the Franktown area. We believe this James Sample of Franktown area was a first cousin of my great grandfather William. There was another one on McCaffrey Rd. in Goulbourn, one in Carleton place and my great grandfather William married to Matilda McCullough and then his second wife Elizabeth Amelia Ebert. My great grandfather William after coming to Canada settled in the Munster area and stayed there for the rest of his life. I have my great grandfather Sample's descendants all accounted for so this lady Ann Sample marrying Thomas Leaver may be the early Carleton Place Samples. Don't get me wrong now, in later years there were quite a few of my Sample cousins moved to Carleton Place from Goulbourn and Huntley. There was also a grandson of my great grandfather called James Sample, born Huntley twp., who moved to Corkery. I had seen both the marriage announcements that you included on the Swain Siblings that married Sample siblings. The one for Matilda Sample was incorrect and should read that she is the daughter of William Sample and Matilda McCullough but I realize that you can probably only write what you see. The Ann Sample who was the witness to William Sample is most likely his sister Annie who married William McGregor and both of them are buried in the Munster Union Cemetery. As a matter of interest, William Sample, we now know him as William Henry Semple, went to North Dakota, USA, then up into Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He ended up being a subcontractor for the railroad, laying rail bed and erecting bridges and after marrying four times, so far we have only identified two of his wives, he died in Montana and we have not been able to find out where he is buried. Over the years we have kept in touch with children and their descendants from his first marriage. Matter of fact I located William Henry Semple and his second wife in the 1901 Manitoba census. Through a bunch into a tangent because they didn't know that he had been there. Likely doing something with railroad beds. That is a great site that you are working on and your good work is very much appreciated by all. Thank you very very much. (The link refers to the Ontario Vital Statistics web page ... Al) There is a bunch of us working on the McNeely clan and we had hit a stone wall on one family of Moore. I asked the Anglican Archivist to see what he could come up with and it was wonderful information that they found. They charge $40.00 per hour for their research but it was well worth the money. Still a couple of stone walls but they may crumble. They found us a husband for a daughter, confirmed the identity of another dau. and then threw us a curve by identifying a son that we had never heard of. Thanks again for your info. If I can be of any help do not hesitate to ask. ... Robert
