March 14, 2003:
Ellen Paul is working on (among many other things) a one name study of the
surname SHANNON. Anyone have connections to the SHANNON name in Eastern Ontario
or western Quebec?
Al:
Here's one branch of the Shannon family who passed through Ottawa from
Ireland by way of Portneuf Co., QC.
Best, Ellen Paul
Shannon was originally part of what is known today as "Ste-Catherine- de-la-Jacques-Cartier."
In fact, "Shannon" still remains in the Parish of Ste. Catherines. The settlement began
in 1823, but the church in Ste. Catherine's was only built in 1832 and the parishioners
used to attend the church in the neighbouring town of St-Augustin. Shannon is very similar
to many small towns up the Ottawa Valley and in fact members of many "Shannon" families
migrated to the Ottawa Valley in the 1830's, 1840's and 1850's. "Shannon" was named after
Michael Shannon (husband of Alice Tracey) because he used to deliver the mail to the
settlers once a week from Quebec City. The Richard Shannon-Catherine Downey family are
descendants of Michael Shannon and Alice Tracey. (contributed by Gerry Neville)

March 21, 2003:
In the 1851 Ontario census for March Township five individual with the surname Shannon appear:
p. 2 Catherine Shannon, 13 yrs. born Ireland serving in the household of John Fahey, 63 yrs. and his wife Ann, 55 yrs.
p. 21 Mary Shannon, 17 yrs., born Ireland, servicing in the household of Alexander Gou, 36 yrs., and his wife, Catherine, 40 yrs.
p. 34 Ann Shannon, 16 yrs., born Ireland, serving in the household of Thomas Lahey (should be Fahey), 27 yrs. and his wife Teresa, 24 yrs.
p. 36 Eliza Shannon, 14 yrs., born Ireland, serving the household of Patrick Murphy, 33 yrs., and his wife, Margaret, 27 yrs.
p. 44 Robert Shannon, 50 yrs., born Ireland, a laborer in the household of George Graham, 45 yrs., and his wife, Ann, 38 yrs.
All the girls professed to be Roman Catholic, but Robert Shannon is Church of England. This could be an error since George Graham and everyone in his family was Church of England. The Shannon girls with the exception of Mary were all in Roman Catholic households and the head of household with the exception of Alexander Gou who was born in Scotland were all Irish-born.
By 1861 none of them are in March. Did they marry? Die? Was Robert Shannon the girls' father? I think Mary Shannon may be the same woman who married Joseph St. Denis and who appears in the 1861 ON census for Richmond Village living – boarding in the household of John Vaughn. In 1865 an Elizabeth Shannon shows up in the register of St. Philip's in Richmond Village baptizing her daughter Sarah Eliza with her husband, Louis Caillé. There are no other records for this couple in the register even though Eliza is known to have died between 1865 and 1871. Her widowed husband lived in North Gower until his death in 1916.

Thanks a lot, Al. I don't have the cemetery listings, but having the
information on the Troys helps. I'm so glad they died after civil
registration. All the people I named were sponsors at my St. Denis + Shannon
baptisms. Since most of them, with the exception of Troys, were
approximately the same age as my 2d great grandparents, I'm hoping there
might be a connection in the old country.
Best, Ellen

TEAHAN:
Hi again, Ellen:
There were two TEAHANs on the 1829 McCabe List. They were William and John.
They both came from Roscrea, County Tipperary.
John may have been married to a DARCY. William had a brother-in-law named
NISBETT (Nesbitt?).
One of these men may have been the father of Denis. I'll keep my eyes open
tomorrow.
Some of the old records from Corkery may be mixed up - there were families
named Teahan, Behan and Teeven - all easily inter-transcribed.

Joseph St. Denis and Mary Shannon
Good morning, Al,
My husband and I just returned from a cousins' reunion which your
website actually generated. Family tradition among those folks has it that
our Mary Shannon came from County Cork. We have very little to go on, but
we're going to try.
One of the cousins is developing a website to coordinate our
information. It's just beginning now, but, in light of your contribution to
this effort, I thought you might like the link. (Click here)
www.bagnell.org
Hope all is well and that you are having a good summer.
Warm regards,
Ellen
October 20, 2008:
Hi Al,
In light of the new Shannon web page, I thought it might be of interest to post the fact
that there is a new Shannon Y-DNA study beginning at
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Shannon/
An excerpt from the site:
There appear to be several sources of SHANNON families. The Scots-Irish tended to come
to America in the 1600's and 1700's and were generally Protestant. The Irish came in the
mid 1800's and tended to be Catholic. Some Shannon groups came about due to the Civil War.
Others were modifications of similar names (Shanahan as example) or due to adoption.
Large groups of Shannons also exist in Ireland, Canada and Australia.
My Shannon ancestor seems to have sprung unbegotten in Richmond Village so I'm eager to
see what the study reveals.
Best,
... Ellen
