Mistaken Identity: A Cold Case File from the 1830's

New April 28, 2010:

Hi!
Thank you for the work that you have all done at Bytown.net.

I have a question in regards to an Item dated March 5, 2008 on your Buckingham Page.
There are a list of Baptisms for 18 Feb. 1834 for Buckingham, Lower Canada. My question regards the entry:

18 Feb 1834
Baptism of Daniel, son of Jeremiah Shea (ML# 62) and Ann Doyle.
Godparents: Edward Barrett & Ellen Cosgrove.
(Note: as explained below, I made a transcription error for the above record. My "Jeremiah Shea", above, is not ML# 62. ... Al)

Do you have proof that this Jeremiah Shea is indeed #62 on the McCabe List and that his wife is Ann Doyle?

I am researching Jeremiah Shea whose wife was Mary Kennedy. They also have a child who was Baptized in Buckingham.

24 Oct 1838 in Buckingham Registre, Quebec, N.D. du Bonsecours, La Petite Nation Buckingham Grenville.
Baptism of Patrice Shea, daughter of Jeremiah Shea farmer and Marie Kennedy du Grand Calumet.

I need to confirm who the wife is for Jeremiah Shea (ML#62) as I have been doing research in Civil Parish of Glenkeen, North Tipperary, Ireland,
assuming that his wife is Mary Kennedy. The origin for Jeremiah Shea (ML#62) in the McCabe List is stated as Tipperary, Glankin, Currabaha.
The Townland of Currabaha is in the Glenkeen Civil Parish. Currabaha is in the Roman Catholic Parish of Borrisoleigh. Jeremiah Shea and
Mary Kennedy were Roman Catholics. The Catholic Records for Borrisoleigh are at the National Library in Dublin, Ireland on two rolls of
film NLI, Pos. 2488 & 2489. Unfortunately I don't have access to these records myself.

Baptisms: 1814-1880 (with gaps) NLI, Pos. 2488, 2489.
Marriages: 1814-1880 (with gaps) NLI, Pos. 2488, 2489.

Here is some more info that may be useful for someone that could pursue this further.

Currabaha Townland, County Tipperary, North Riding.
Civil Parish: Glenkeen.
Barony: Kilnamanagh Upper.
Poor Law Union: Thurles.
Catholic Diocese: Cashel & Emly.
Catholic Parish: Borrisoleigh.

Could you please let me know how you have determined that Jeremiah Shea (ML#62)'s wife is Ann Doyle.

Your help would be most appreciated.
Thank you.
Yours truly, Andrew.

Hello Andrew
The Jeremiah Shea you talk about, is in fact Jeremiah Sheehan. The transcribed name was taken for Shea and not Sheehan because the
name was spelled SHEAN, and this was retrieved from the Buckingham Register. Please see the attached jpegs of the actual register
and the deaths of both Ann Doyle and Jeremiah Sheehan. The actual wife for Jeremiah Shea is Mary Kennedy.

Take care for now

Dear Taylor, Thank you for your reply. You do exceptionally good work and I am surprised how quickly you can get the info together. I have very carefully gone over the info that you have sent and I am more convinced now then ever that the Jeremiah Shea ML#62 is the one I am researching whose wife is Mary Kennedy. Please let me explain. In the McCabe List it does mention that he had a brother in Law whose name was Michael Ryan. This suggests that it could be the Godfather in the Baptism of Marie Shean daughter of Jeremiah Shean and Ann Doyle. In Ireland the name Michael Ryan is extremely common and this could just be a coincidence. However, in all the documents that you have kindly sent, the spelling is Shean or Sheehan and not Shea. I realize the importance of keeping an open mind when doing the research and keeping in mind the name variations for both the Christian and Surnames. I have done extensive research now with the records in Ireland for Currabaha, Glenkeen, Tipperary and surrounding Townlands using the Tithe Applotment, Griffiths Valuation, Tax Ratepayers records, 1901 and 1911 Census for Ireland, etc. and in all of these records the name is always Shea for Jeremiah's two brothers Dennis and James, and Michael Ryan is still there in Currabaha. So at this point I lean toward Jeremiah Shea ML#62 as being the one whose wife is Mary Kennedy. I could still be wrong but I do want to check it out using the Parish Records in Ireland as soon as I can get access to them looking for the Marriage Records for Jeremiah, Dennis, and James Shea and Michael Ryan whose wife was Jeremiah's sister. I am very grateful for your help and will send you the results as soon as I can get access to those Parish Records which may take a while. Thank you again for your kindness in helping us with the Family History. All the Best. Have a Great Weekend. With warmest regards, Andrew. _______________________________________ Good morning, Andrew and fellow researchers. I've had a look at this Jeremiah Shea matter and now conclude also that the Jeremiah Shea married to Mary Kennedy is very likely the same Jeremiah Shea who is listed as #62 on the McCabe List. The name of Ann Doyle's husband is definitely Sheehan (Shean, Shehan, Shane). I have a list of some transcriptions of the early records of Notre Dame and here is an 1829 entry: Notre Dame, Ottawa, September 13, 1829 Baptism of Michael, aged 4 days, lawful son of Jeremiah Shea and Mary Kennedy Godparents: John Mulvihill and Judith Ryan John Mulvihill and Judith / Julia Ryan were married. John Mulvihill came from Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary - see our Mulvihill web page. According to the McCabe List, John Mulvihill, ML# 248, also had several Ryan brothers-in-law and he could provide a reference from a Daniel Ryan, Esq. It's possible that the Shea, Ryan and Mulvihill families were known to each other back in Borrisoleigh. Here is a James Ryan, ML# 633, also from "Glankeen, Tipperary, near Borrisoleigh": Source: an excerpt from the original McCabe List. A transcription of this list is available in The McCabe List: Early Irish in the Ottawa Valley, by Dr. Bruce Elliott, Ontario Genealogical Society, ISBN 1-55075-048-8. James Ryan, Tipperary Ireland Thanks, Taylor, for your work on this. It shows the value of going back to the source documents (and not relying on a transcribed record, as I did in this case). I will make the correction on the Buckingham page and, with your permission, Andrew, I'd like to put a link to a new web page containing your original inquiry and Taylor's response. Not only would this correct the information on the Buckingham page but it would provide a very good example, for other researchers in general, on how to do research on early Irish immigrants to our area and some of the resources available. Thanks again, ... Al
