O'HALLORAN and SMITH surnames in Fitzroy Township
Ontario, Canada, in the 1800's

October 4, 2010:

Annie Annie
Hi Everyone, I am just connecting myself to the Fitzroy families. My paternal great great grand mother was an O'Halloran. Unfortunately, Annie, was the only one who had a biological child so no families in Canada seem to immediatly connect. Anyways, Annie's first husband, David Friend died 9 months after the birth of their son, Stephen, my great grandfather. Annie remarried to a man named Ned (Nelson) Smith, who, as I just found out was born in Fitzroy, but moved to Round Lake Centre, as well as the rest of his family. Passed down was a photo album. The only picture we were able to completely connect was of Annie and her son Stephen, and Ned's sister Katie. (Age progressed Annie, and the photo that came from that almost exactly matched another photo we had of her). All the photos were taken in Ottawa at various studios, so we are assuming it is a Smith album. It could also be a Friend. In the very front of the album was a land deed for a Price property. My curiosity was struck, so i started to research who this Price man was, and it turns out that his daughter married an Isaac Smith. I have extensively researched the Smith family for a chance I may strike a family tree with pictures, and match some. This is who helped raise my great grandfather, and I would really really like to see the people he say at some point in his life, and know who they were. If anyone is able to help me with this task, (i.e. have pictures of Smith's, or O'Halloran's from Fitzroy Harbour) it would really really be appreciated. Most of the pictures are of people under the age of about 35. Thanks Again. Kelsey __________________________________________ Hello, Kelsey: Thanks for your interesting e-mail regarding your O'Halloran, Friend, Smith ancestors in Fitzroy, Ottawa and at Round Lake Centre. Is Round Lake Centre the village in Eastern Ontario at Round Lake roughly south of the Town of Pembroke? Also, I notice a Catholic Halloran family was living close to Fitzroy Township by the 1830's.They attended St. Michael's Church which is located at the border between Fitzroy and Huntley Townships. Is it OK with you if I add your e-mail to a new web page for your ancestors? I'll run it off the Fitzroy Township page (www.bytown.net/fitzroy.htm) and hopefully someone will have further information regarding these folks. Also, I assume the Smiths were Protestant. Do you know if they attended St. George's Anglican Church in the village of Fitzroy Harbour? If you like, I'd also include a couple of photos where you have identified the people in the pictures. You never know -- sometimes many copies of these old photos were made to distribute among family members in other parts of Canada or the U.S. Please let me know. ... Al Lewis __________________________________________ Hi Allan, I am assuming this is the same family (Halloran in the 1830s). Do you have any more information on them. My connection is through a Michael O'Halloran born in 1825 in County Tipperary Ireland, who married Johanna Bradley, born in about 1830 in Cross Clare, Ireland). I am not sure if they were married before they immigrated, or if they were raised in Canada. They did attend St. Michael's and this is where some of the children are buried. As for the smiths. Ned's mother Catherine was Irish so they also attended St. Michael's, but her husband's family were from the USA originally, and I am unsure off hand what religion they were. Nelson Sr.'s parents (Isaac Chauncey Smith and Sarah Wakefield) immigrated to Canada from Vermont in about 1829, between the birth of their two oldest sons, Isaac Jr and William. This is the same Round Lake, I grew up in both Round Lake and Pembroke. i have included some photos, (just pictures of pictures). Most had studios so I was able to research the studio and get it down to 10-20 years in time. Hope someone can help. Feel free to add me to the mailing list. I really really appreciate this. The second picture of the older lady in the dress that is striped at the top is Annie Friend-Smith nee O'Halloran. We know this for sure. There is a picture of three people, two ladies and a child in the middle. I age progressed the lady on the right, and the picture almost identically matched the one of Annie. I would also like to add, David Friend was married before to Ellen Winnell, and had many children, this family, lived in Aylmer, and had originally moved from Croydon England. ... Kelsey
New January 13, 2011: Hi, I am a gggrandaughter of Wakefield Smith and Margret Carr. I am seeking information on Margret Carr and The Smith children. Emma Caroline Smith married into the Harris family. Susan Jane married into the Bidgood family. William Smith and Isaac Smith I know nothing about. Isaac may have married a May Carr? John Henry and Mary Davis I have information on. Would anyone have information or pictures they could share with me on these families. I know a tin type picture exists of Wakefield and Margaret Carr with Emma and Susan in the picture. I would love to locate a copy of this photo for my family history. I have a great deal of information on the Smiths and can take the family history back to the late 1600's. I have seen from various posts that Mary Harris is related to these families. I would like to be able to contact her or anyone that has stories, information or photos and family trees about the Smith, Neron, Davis, Harris, Patrick, Larratt, Dorion, Marcellus, Hickey, Murphy, McDonald families. I would also be interested in attending any kind of family reunion to meet descendents of these families. John Henry Smiths children are pretty much missing. He married Mary Davis daughter of Annie Patrick who married David Davis of South March. They are buried there. John had 2 children die at birth, Maggie and Danny. They are buried on his old farm in Fitzroy with no marker. Harold Smith, Emma Jean Smith ( Jean More) Sarah Irene Smith (Irene Homer). Irene is buried Canon Whyte Cemetery, Harold is buried in the Anglican Cemetery in Fitzroy and Jean is buried in Almonte. My grandmother is Sarah Irene Smith who went by Irene. She married William Neron. Later married Michael Homer. Harold was a bachelor with no children. Sincerely, Carol Gottberg

Regarding the two photos above: Hi, I don't suppose it would hurt to add them to the website. It would be interesting to note that Isaac Chauncey Smith and Sarah Wakefield came to Fitzroy Harbour from Williston County in Chittenden, Vermont, USA. I am trying to find out whether or not they have loyalist ancestry. He descends from Lt. Samuel Smith/Smythe who arrived in Salem on The Elizabeth. He came over with his wife Elizabeth who also was a Smith. They were Puritans from Suffolk England and they arrived in time for The Indian Wars. Lt. Samuel Smith was one of the founding families of Hadley, Massachussetts. It is rumoured that he helped to harbour the regicides Whalley and Goffe with the Rev. Russell. If anyone could help me find out if Isaac and Sarah had loyalist connections that would be a great help to me. The last living Smith in my line passed away this year. Her name was Emma Jean Smith More aka Jean More. She was predeceased by her sister (my grandmother) Sarah Irene Smith aka Irene Homer and her brother Harold D. W. Smith who is buried with his mother and father Mary Davis and John Henry Smith as well as Susan Smith Bidgood and Wakefield Smith and Margaret Carr in ST. Georges Anglican Cemetery in Fitzroy. Sarah Irene Smith Homer(first husband was William Neron who remarried May Acres) is buried with her 2nd husband and 2 daughters in the Whyte Cemetery off Canon Smythe Road. The book (and movie) "Last of the Mohicans" is loosely based on this family tree and its branches. It was written by James Fenimore Cooper and he descends from Stephen Jennings of Deerfield. Steven Jennings and Benjamin Waite travelled to Montreal to rescue 31 townspeople who were captured by the natives during the Deerfield Massacre. Both their wives were pregnant. They gave birth in Canada to Canada Waite and Captivity Jennings. Canada Waite later married Joeseph Smith descendent of The Sophia Smith College. Carr, Styles, Arnold, Taylor, White, Anderson, Harris, Bidgood, Knight, Wakefield, Hitchcock, Billings, Chauncey, Tucker, Moss, Porter, Neron, Patrick, Davis, Dorion, Brine, Gottberg will connect to this family tree. It is heartwarming to learn that Isaac sold part of his lot so the town could build school house #4 in Fitzroy. He continued a long family line that valued education and supported the founding of schools. Samuel's son Chileab has one of the few remaining legible tombstones from the late 1600's that you can still read in Hadley. We descend from Chileab Smith. His brother Phillip was supposed to be killed by Mary Webster the witch of Hadley and this is written about by Cotton Mather who wrote about the Salem Witch Trials. George W. Bush descends from Phillip who was also a son of Lt. Samuel Smith. It is a very interesting family tree and much of it is written about in the history of New England. ... Carol Gottberg
