Michael STARRS or STARR
from County Tyrone, Ireland to Bytown
also Charles GOULDEN and Rosanna STARRS

I am researching my great grand father Michael Starrs, Alderman, owner of
the Bytown Inn, I think it was called. He had a sister Roseanna married to
Charles Goulden (see 1881 Census, below) also a hotelier. They were prominent in the Irish community.
Michael was arrested and questioned re the murder of Thomas Darcy McGee
as it was suspected that the murderer(s) hid in his hotel. Nothing came of this
and he continued to serve in various capacities in the city government, as well
as keeping on his hotel business. Any information gratefully accepted. They
came from Dromore, near Omagh, Co. Tyrone.

March 20, 2002: The Ottawa Citizen of March 17, 2002 (St. Patrick's Day) published an excellent account of the trial of James Patrick Whalen, who was hanged for the assassination of Darcy McGee. See page A5 , Column 1 for information on Michael Starr who owned the hotel on Clarence Street in the By Ward market. Bridget Whelan (nee Boyle) stayed at the hotel during the trial and Michael Starr tried to collect the body from the Nicholas Street Gaol to have it transported to Montreal for burial. "Jim" Whelan was the last person hanged in Canada and his remains are under the pavement of a parking lot at the Gaol. See also Darcy McGee.

June 25, 2009: I'm researching James P. Goulden who came to Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA in 1868, my mother's grandfather. I think his father was the Charles Goulden mentioned in your forum entries in the Bytown.net site. I can't prove he was related to Charles or that his brothers were possible William or Robert A Goulden. Has anyone more info about Charles Goulden, who came to Canada in 1826 - how did you find this info: "Charles Goulden who was born at Dromore County Fermanagh Ireland Oct 5 1812 and died Dec 30 1895 in Ottawa he married Rose Anne (Starrs) on Feb 11 1844 at Dromore Co. " Thanks for anything you can tell me, Anita Rudy ____________________________ Thanks to the research work of Tom and Brian, it has been confirmed that James P. Goulden is Anita's GreatGrandfather. ... Al
June 29, 2009: Anita has sent along the 1880 Census of Iowa referring to her ancestors: Name: James P. Goulden Home in 1880: Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa Age: 33 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847 Birthplace: Canada Relation to Head of Household: Self (Head) Spouse's Name: Helen Father's birthplace: Ireland Mother's birthplace: Ireland Neighbors: View others on page Occupation: Farmer & Co. Recorder Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Household Members: Name Age James P. Goulden 33 Helen Goulden 26 James G. Goulden 4M Lessie Castol 22 James was probably in Iowa when my grandfather Robert Sherraden Goulden (born July-9-1883 Council Bluffs, IA) was born - James P. was married to Helen Evelyn Sherraden (1854- abt 1930) and they had 2 sons, James G. and Robert Sherraden Goulden (my grandfather). I have several photos of the Sherraden family, but none of my great grandfather. I also believe that these 2 below could be Robert's brother and sister-in-law: From 1920 US Census, Home in Hennepin MN: James G Goulden born abt 1881 (about 30yrs old) Margaret H Goulden born abt 1882. because my mother Alys was named after her "Aunt Margaret" and wrote to her and they worked on the railroad. I would also like to see the letter that Rod has. To AL - I will send the newspaper article to you when I get it, if you would like to post it.
