from County Tyrone, Ireland to Ottawa, Canada
also Charles GOULDEN and Rosanna STARRS

I am researching my great grand father Michael Starrs, Alderman, owner of
the Bytown Inn, I think it was called. He had a sister Roseanna married to
Charles Goulden (see 1881 Census, below) also a hotelier. They were prominent in the Irish community.
Michael was arrested and questioned re the murder of Thomas Darcy McGee
as it was suspected that the murderer(s) hid in his hotel. Nothing came of this
and he continued to serve in various capacities in the city government, as well
as keeping on his hotel business. Any information gratefully accepted. They
came from Dromore, near Omagh, Co. Tyrone.

March 20, 2002: The Ottawa Citizen of March 17, 2002 (St. Patrick's Day) published an excellent account of the trial of James Patrick Whalen, who was hanged for the assassination of Darcy McGee. See page A5 , Column 1 for information on Michael Starr who owned the hotel on Clarence Street in the By Ward market. Bridget Whelan (nee Boyle) stayed at the hotel during the trial and Michael Starr tried to collect the body from the Nicholas Street Gaol to have it transported to Montreal for burial. "Jim" Whelan was the last person hanged in Canada and his remains are under the pavement of a parking lot at the Gaol. See also Darcy McGee.

June 25, 2009: I'm researching James P. Goulden who came to Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA in 1868, my mother's grandfather. I think his father was the Charles Goulden mentioned in your forum entries in the Bytown.net site. I can't prove he was related to Charles or that his brothers were possible William or Robert A Goulden. Has anyone more info about Charles Goulden, who came to Canada in 1826 - how did you find this info: "Charles Goulden who was born at Dromore County Fermanagh Ireland Oct 5 1812 and died Dec 30 1895 in Ottawa he married Rose Anne (Starrs) on Feb 11 1844 at Dromore Co. January 13, 2015: My great great grandfather,Terance Gormley, was a school teacher in Drumquin, Co, Tyrone. He was given that position by a Father Arthur Starrs, after the English had granted the Irish the right to once again educate themselves. I believe this took place in the late teens or early 20s of the nineteenth century. Terance married a women named Catherine Starrs. I don't know if the marriage took place before or after his appointment as school teacher. In 1847 Catherine, along with her eldest son Henry Gormley, his wife Mary Burns, their 2 children and several of Henry's siblings sailed on the ship Sesostris for Quebec. The Gormleys were among 427 passengers who hoped to survive the 6 week passage. After quarantine on Grosse Isle near Quebec City, the family eventually settled in Buckingham, Quebec. By 1880 most of the family, including many Canadian born children, had emigrated to the USA and followed the logging trade to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Unfortunately Catherine Starrs had died in Buckingham. Another priest from Drunquin, County Tyrone named William Starrs also made it to the new world. Born in 1807, he studied classics at Maynooth College and completed his priestly studies at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He was ordained at St. Patrick's Cathedral and later in his priesthood rose to be its Rector and Vicar-General of the Archdiocese of New York.* I know I'm related to Catherine Starrs, but know nothing else about her family. I also don't if fathers Arthur and William Starrs are related or if they are related some how to Catherine. Hoping one of you might be able to give me a lead, ...Kevin Gormley *Obit in the New York Times, Feb. 7, 1873 ___________________________________ Hi Kevin, I have also been trying to find more about the Starrs. Here's what I have learned - most I got from this website http://www.bytown.net/starrs.htm and Tom O'Neill. My great-grandfather was James Patrick Goulden (b. abt 1845, Buckingham (Ottawa) Canada, d. 1904 in Santiago Cuba of malaria; James lived in Iowa ~ 1868-1883 when my grandfather Robert Sherraden Goulden was born. Father of James P. Goulden was Charles Goulden, an innkeeper, b. 5 Oct 1812 at Dromore County Fermanagh (Catholic), d. 30 Dec 1895 in Ottawa, Canada, came to Ottawa in 1826 to work on the Rideau Canal, married 11 Feb 1844 at Dromore Co. Tyrone, Ireland to Rose Anne Starrs (b. 1819 at Omagh Ireland and d. Ottawa 1903.) -Anita Rudy ___________________________________ Al Mr. Richard O'Connor of the city of Ottawa is also a Goulden it was was his uncle or father who had the information on James that was forwarded to me. I will forward this to him and see if someone on his side of the tree can help. Also I will include Michael O'Neill who is involved at Saint Patrick's Basilica here in Ottawa whose family coming from Buckingham. Thanks Tom ONeill
May 22, 2015: Hi all : I have been doing some investigating into a Michael Starrs born 1851 in Buckingham Quebec. From records I found his parents are Henry Starrs and Catherine Carrol. Also from more records, this Henry Starrs parents are Robert Starrs and Mary McGuiggan. This Robert Starrs has a daughter named Rosanna that marries a Charles Goulden ( info from public member trees ) . From info from a Helen Shirley Mckenna this Rosanna ( confirmed married to Charles Goulden ) also has a brother named Michael ( one generation older than the one I have been tracing ) . From public member family trees the Robert Starrs born 1792 Dromore, county Ireland also has a son named Robert James Starrs with a whole line of known descendants. Putting together all of these tidbits of information you would have Robert Starrs born 1792 Dromore, Tyrone married to Mary McGuiggan with the following children : Rosanna b. abt .1819-23, Henry Starrs b. 1825, Michael Starrs, and Robert James Starrs. If anyone has something to add please contact me at darcystarrs@telus.net p.s. would also like to contact Shirley Mckenna, so if anyone knows her email address, could you pass it on ? Thanks, ... Darcy Starrs _____________________________ Good morning, all: By coincidence I am also related to the Starrs family through Jane (Jennie) Burns and by chance, I was recently reading a book about the History of Buckingham by Pierre Louis Lapointe which I have recently added to our web page at www.bytown.net/buckingham.htm. The Star / Stars/ Starrs family is mentioned in the book and thanks to your e-mail, Darcy, I am now reminded that these families were connected. Thanks for this! I believe that one of the Starrs men at Buckingham was a land agent for the government. I'll check again in the book and see what his first name was. Is it OK with you if I add your e-mail to our web page at www.bytown.net/starrs.htm as a contact for other researchers of the Starrs family? Please let me know. By the way, here is my connection to the Starrs family. Jane (Jennie) Burns was my grandfather's sister: My grandfather's grandparents were Lawrence Burns and Margaret Doyle who came to Bytown (Ottawa) in 1828 to work on the Rideau Canal. Here are some Descendants of Stephen Starr and Jane Burns. Several of the Starrs, Burns and Sulivan men (also my ancestors) probably all met when they were working for the Fire Department in Ottawa in the early 1900's. 1 Stephen Starr .. + Mary Jane Burns 1873 - ...... 2 Winifred Starr ...... 2 Michael Starr ...... 2 James Starr ...... 2 Harold Starr ...... 2 Maynard Starr ...
