January 15, 2003:
Thanks to Ellen Paul who contributed this great compilation of the registers
of the St. Clare Parish at Dwyer Hill. There are a great many connections between
the families listed here and the folks at Richmond, Fallowfield, Corkery and South Gloucester!
Dwyer Hill is just west of Richmond, in Goulbourn Township.
June 2, 2003:
Also, Scott Naylor's web site containing photographs of Cemetery Grave Markers in the
Ottawa region includes pictures of the grave markers at St. Clare's Cemetery.

At the start of the site above it states that "Dwyer Hill is just west of Richmond, in Marlborough Township.
My map shows that Dwyer Hill is in Goulbourn township.

Thank you Scott:
You are correct St Clare's R.C. Cemetery, Dwyer Hill is in Goulbourn
township Lot 6 Concession 1.
This cemetery was proceeded by the pioneer burial ground parts of Lot 22 & 23
concession 9 Marlborough. Called Dwyer Hill Pioneer R.C. Burial Ground (Abandoned).
According to book "Who's Where": -"in about 1962 the graves were disturbed by
vandals. Prior to 1962 there was evidence of 20 graves. The graves were originally
marked with pine slabs. The last wooden marker left standing was not found after 1940.''

From Robert Sample:
Thank you for including me in this exchange. I think we should rely on
what our resident expert has to say about this. I am not the resident expert
but I do know that my dad and brother as a guest of Mr. Jim Laffin, visited
the cemetery in about 1950 when they bought from Mr. Laffin hydro poles to
carry the wires to our farm. The slabs were still visible then and some were
standing.
Several people in the past forty years or so who have ancestors buried in the
Cemetery have attempted to have something done about its restoration but so
far, they have not become a sufficiently large enough voice to be heard.
I have heard numerous stories about what happened to the pine slabs one being
that when they put the main hydro trunk through the area that the hydro crews
had used the wooden slabs as ground anchors for brace wires. I am sure for
each story we hear, there are many more to be told. When we see a broken or
smashed monument we readily assume that vandals caused it. I suspect a very
small percentage of damage was caused by vandals but rather by a neighbours
straying cows. Cows like to scratch themselves and a newly found place to
graze which just happens to be a cemetery has lots of places to scratch.
Furthermore, a 15 inch cedar post has a life span of about fifty years. The
slabs were as I hear it dug into the ground and back filled. There is some
debate as to the type of wood used and I have heard pine to blue oak. If some
were oak, they may still be around.
